Yeah, saw that on the Beeb a couple of days ago. Apparently they've already got north of £30K.

But, money can't replace the time & effort & love that's gone into building what's been destroyed. I really, really feel for the members of the MRC.

No. Money cannot replace what they have lost, but it can show that others care, and inspire them to rebuild, better than before. This could happen to any of us, and I think it should make us think, and if we can, contribute to the recovery of fellow hobbyists.

I believe Mr Stewart is something of a model train enthusiast. Said he was more proud of appearing on the cover of Railway Modeller Magazine than any of the music magazines.

It was mentioned on the There's No Such Thing as a Fish podcast (from the QI Elves/fact finders) that when on tour he books two suites: one for himself, one for his model railway  ;)

I saw this at the weekend, absolutely awful and I hope these kids get some form of punishment and not the usual slap on the wrist.  Maybe make them come along to the Railway club and actually force them to build a small layout themselves, so they can see how much time and effort goes into these things.

As a show organiser, this is also my worst nightmare.  We're lucky that our venue have got 24-hour security on the campus in case of break-ins, and I always make sure that I'm there when they lock up on the Friday night before the event.

Personally I think that is a perfect situation for "restorative justice": if facing people whose twenty-five years of hard work you've wrecked doesn't have an effect, help show them that crimes are never victimless and understand the devastation they've caused ...

Possibly, but I believe there's good evidence - not that I can cite any off the top of my head - that putting the human face in the perpetrator's mind of the victim can have a profound effect.  It can also have a cathartic and ameliorative effect on the victim as well.

Got to be worth a try?

Speaking as someone who grew up in a police state, I need to remark that there are some victimless crimes. Turing was legally convicted of a crime, but he was the only victim. My present marriage would have earned me five to ten in the old days in my dear country.

I have just received a nice message from the club, thanking me for my donation.

They're now at £136000 so they are greatly over their target.

I was reflecting that I have always thought of railway modellers as second class citizens* in a way. Great at terrain, but their models don't have a "bang" element and there don't seem to be dice involved.

I am comforted by the thought that this dreadful incident shows the commonality in our hobbies. We're not so different. Perhaps there's a wider lesson there?


*Techically third class. Them toffee nosed modellers and their artistic ways! Always lauding it above us hard hobbying gamers!
