Bit of help needed here. Who is the SYW general raising his hat above a bald pate?

I don't know for certain but I'd guess its John Manners, Marquess of Granby. At Warburg he famously lead a cavalry charge without his hat, giving rise to the (now largely defunct) phrase "going at it bald headed". Unlike most of the men of his time he did not wear a wig, like Charles XII of Sweden, now that I think of it.

If it's this one you mean, then what Clib says!

Seems he was also quite a nice chap.

He gave many of the wounded troopers from the Warburg battle a pension from his own pocket.

Many of whom set up pubs and frequentlu naming them Marquis of Granby. Hence the number of pubs in England with that name.

Well that is the story I was given years ago, be nice to think it was true

Many thanks guys about the Marquess of Granby. I've now got all my SYW generals boxed off. Still haven't got a Saltyakov yet, but I've ended up with two Frederick the Greats and two von Zietens and I think the character models must still be wrongly coded as in my latest order I had Saltyakov and Ferdinand of Brunswick - a quite large chap as I recall from his portraits and not a skinny general of hussars. Anyway at least I can now model the Marquis of Granby for my non-painting opponent. Thanks again everyone.

We've had a mention previously somewhere about the codes possibly being wrong.  I could do with sending one of each to a SYW buff to identify them properly for us.

Hi Leon,
That's an excellent idea. It took me two goes to get a Seydlitz in his cuirassier armour.

Fair enough, first volunteer can have a complete set to check over, and confirm against the codes.  Ideally with pics and and info to back up the identities.

So, who wants them?!   :-SS

Last Hussar

Can't be the Marquis of Granby

I've got 2.

In my Austrian Army

of 1705...

And they are both wearing grey wigs (ie I undercoat grey and don't paint the hair)
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

The Marquis figure is very similar to the general's ADC (SYW1) but whereas that does have a wig the Marquis figure is quite definitely bald.

Annd... That's why Household Cavalry Troopers are the only soldiers in the British Army who can salute without a headdress....

I've identified and painted up the SYW generals and Leon has sorted the masters. The Photos are on www.flickr.com/photos/57220021@NO5/

The figures will be mounted with subordinates eventually as various levels of command.

DP,

I am having difficulty getting to your photos - continually getting a "you must have followed a bad link" message from flickr.  Just my usual technical incompetence, or a fixable problem?

Nope, me too. Although I'll match your blundering, no problem. =)
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

Well I don't know chaps! I wrote down exactly what it says at the top of my flickr page. However, it is most definitely NO5 on my page, but when I tried the link I too ended up on a dud page which had no5 at the top. I am most definitely not an IT expert so I have no idea why, which is annoying now that the photos are there doing nothing. Anyone else got any idea how to link back to my flickr page?

O Dinas Powys

There's a missing number after the ...@NO5/ (I think 57220021@N05 is your account number)

Managed to find your photos, try:

Well done that man!  Works for me.  And Bravo Zulu to DP for the identification.

Diolch yn fawr O Dinas Powys. Nice to see the little chaps up there at last. Leon has done the code matching at his end of the operation so people should be getting what they order in future.
