I tend to go for armies from periods of history or particular campaigns I'm interested in. Sometimes it gets a bit out of hand, eg Wars of the Roses in four different scales - some not even painted up!

Historical/peer pressure/shiney/latest obsession (not in that order)

I'm gonna have to second that.

Now I,ve been asked to choose my retirement present. Looks like mid-C19th Prussians and Austrians could be putting in an appearance.

going a-viking

1) A period of interest to me. So SiFi is out ...
2) Enough opponents to keep it going and interesting. So it is Blackpowder 10mm at the moment.
3) An army that suits my painting style. 18th Century French say.
4) A historical force that is the right size, interesting and with references easily available. The French Corps in the AWI say.
5) As the man said 'An army that you can love even when it looses'. From the sublime to the ridiculous in one step. It is a French speciality.

I agree with going a-viking. My SYW Austrians don't half take a pounding but they're still one of my favourite armies
