Gentlemen,

Looking for a set of pirate rules for skirmish games. Preferably land AND sea rules (raids, boarding actions with and without approach first).

Have been looking at cutlass, wich looks good but hasn't got sea rules.

Pirates versus navy would suffice, undead pirates would be plus! (pirates of the carribean for the little ones)

Can be big skirmish with upto 30-40 models, but up to 20 would be good too!

Any ideas?

Not a recommendation but there is an Osprey one - Seven Seas I think....Not seen or played them. Cavalier used to publish a set, and Peter Pig still do as far as I'm aware.

Hasn't something called Blood and Plunder just been released though I presume it's 28mm
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Have looked at them, but every review i have read is not very positive  :-

seems to use plotted movement, so guessing that won't work for solo play. Should have mentioned that!

Yes it has, watched the video on beast of war last evening, but seems to be squad based. Looks like a fun game though!

Okay, for solo play then And a Bottle of Rum from Two Hour Wargames.

Not played this one myself, but THW games are usually great for solo play (although I'm aware that some people just do not seem to 'get' them).

Hi Peter,
I like Ganesha Games.

"Flashing Steel" is for skirmishing in the Swashbuckling era with a heavy emphasis on pirates. I like it and have used it for various 17th c. skirmish actions.
"Galleys & Galleons" for ship to ship actions, I have but have never used. They also have additional titles that may be applicable

Encumbered by Idjits, we pressed on

Just checked it out:

"The basic game play of Pirates! hasn't changed since first edition.  Before each turn, every captain writes orders for his ship(s).  "

Plotted movement so I'll keep looking!  :)

There was 'Legends of the High Seas' a good few years ago. Seemed a good game from memory, but we didn't get to play it at the club to really get to grips with it. IIRC there were boarding actions, but if there were, we never played them due to lack of ships!

I was going to suggest Flash g Steel from Ganesha as well - I dont have it but suspect recent reading about Channel Pirates and lace wars games means I may soon :D

Aside from that EnGarde! from Osprey is apparently decent once you know what you're doing. Seven Seas doesn't seem to have very good reviews and Legends of the High Seas was (to us) the worst bits of Legends of the Old West with less playable fun parts...

Have seen a playthrough today (on the wargames illustrated youtube channel) wich shows close combat is done by secretly choosing your actions and revealing simultaneously, so no good solo I'm afraid!

"Tribal" look like a useful set of solo skirmish rules but not much use for ship-to-ship stuff I guess.

The board game "Merchants and Maruders" by ZMan Games has some nice abstract rules for ship-to-ship combat between players that might work as a solo pre-game set-up before boarding actions are played out.

Just a thought.

Fighting Sail is an enjoyable romp,  but it aimed at a player pushing half a dozen big warships with minimal bookkeeping. The end result is a decent game but doesn't suit anyone who wants "captain level" detail or very period specific ships.

PETER Pigs pirate game had usable and seperate boat fighting then a large scale, many bases with multiple figures on each square based  "land raid". We never did more than read them as they didn't grip but others enjoy them... and the boats are nice!

Got a link to the video play thru? Am leaning towards Flashing  Steel myself but might change my mind :)
