Now, Gentlemen of the forum, I come to you with a query.

For some reason that I'm not sure of, I have bought a hot glue gun. That is a gun that dispenses hot glue, rather than a glue gun that has been stolen.

My question is ... why?

I think it's a useful addition to my toolkit. What can I use it for?

And, as my father used to say of tools and cars ... "keep it clean".

I have two, I don't use them anymore.

Traditional glues are easier to manage.

They are enormously useful for burning oneself.

Or repairing things where duct tape (duck tape) won't work
(Which is maybe one in a thousand).
Did use one once to glue sheets of foamcore together.

I made my 28 mm buildings with one. Very useful for terrain  building.

Yep, good for terrain like securing the seams of insides of buildings and also for attaching things like trees to coins and washers, securing hedges to bases etc etc. I have also used them to attach clump foliage to tree armatures .... on those days when nothing else seems to work!

they don't really have the precision for doing fine things and you are often fighting against the long stringy tail they can produce, but for fast, big hit blobs etc, they are superb.

You need to work quite quickly with it, as soon as it cools it goes hard.

Terrain. Simples.

Be VERY careful, it might get hot enough to set fire to air in RUNCORN

Oddly enough, duct tape isn't good for fixing ducts. Doesn't do well in conditions of changing temperature apparently.

I've had one for years and don't use it that much. The main thing was basing trees to coins - its good when you need a big blob to secure two mismatched items.

Definitely for terrain rather than figures!

A common misconception. One needs to use rolls of the stuff not single layers. The outer 20 layers may become brittle but they insulate the inner twenty which remain sticky and supple. That's my theory of use anyway.   

I attach my figures to coffee stirrers with hot glue when painting. Easy to pop off, or pry off with a small screw driver. Just a little bit of glue is fine.

I've got an annoyingly small glue gun that I use mostly to stick coir doormat or foam to my pvc foam sheet bases. 

So yeah, terrain.

Terrain and temporary attachment to stuff while painting are already mentioned.

I also use it to make boxes for making silicon molds.  It works well for sealing all those cracks before you pour in the liquid.

PS you can buy different colours of glue - I have some black, not used it yet but thought it might be useful.
