How many of you mix 10mm and 12mm?

I have mostly Pendraken 10mm but mix in some other source 12mm for pose variety. If on separate stands, I don't even worry about size differences. If on same stands, I shim up the 10mm.

It's a regular topic of conversation amongst wargamers as far as I can see.

10s and 12s, 15s and 18s, etc. etc.

Which is bizarre because real soldiers are all sorts of shapes and sizes so what ought to exercise us is units of troops of identical height and build not those of mixed size and shape!

The difference of inches though between soldiers is fine, but when you have some 10mm next to 12mm, it probably scales to about a foot of difference and the bulk of some of them is about the same wide. I do mix occasionally, my medieval Europeans and Saracens are a mix of Pendraken and irregular and they look fine but there have been some others I've checked and there is just no way I'm mixing them on the same stands, different armies perhaps, but not same.

I do tend to mix sizes between armies happily, between units fairly happily, but not within stands.

Fortunately most of the 10mm manufacturers are pretty close to each other which allows for more variety.

As Genom says its more the bulk of the bigger figures that is the most noticeable part - they are just much chunkier than their smaller friends - and don't really look like the differences between a group of people.

Yes it would be great if manufacturers could make a variety of sizes of figures, but due to the limited number of poses that can be produced cost effectively, its likely to mean that all you SMG guys are all shorties, and your running riflemen are all tall - which will probably still look odd.

My 10mm are Pendraken, my 12mm are Kallistra ....... They do not mix.

Fortunately when each company do a subject, they pretty much give a complete and self contained line.

The problem doesn't tend to be the figures being bigger / smaller, it's the weaponry. A musket should still be the same size no matter who holds it.

I do it frequently, and nobody has objected yet.

I think I have already mentioned somewhere that this works pretty well with my medieval/early renaissance stuff, but I won't risk it with my WWI armies. 10mm and bona fide 1/144 does seem to work extremely well (see my posts on figure comparisons in the C20th board).

I happily mix 10mm, 12mm and even 1/144 from all sorts of different sources (including Shapeways...), but as I play Skirmish scale with individual bases the difference isn't as obvious. In fact, I try to mix figures in a unit so as to get more variety, and where I need easily identifiable individuals (ammo carriers for MGs in CoC for instance) I use all the same minis.

Tanks & vehicles I also mix scales & manufacturers, but not of the same type. No two manufacturers seem to have used the same set of plans for the Archer...

It's pretty straightforward, it's a man with a bow.

The figures produced by the company formally known as Wargames South fit quite well with Pendraken.  I have some of their officers and use their cavalry in pilotka caps as mounted scouts and artillery outriders.
