I went to an Open University Summer School many years ago, and we saw two cross-dressers/TVs (Eddie Izzard was in his ascendancy then). Very pleasant cheerful chaps they were too. We spoke to one of the student reps asking if it was common, and he said, yes, the three of them had been before.

We spent the rest of the week trying to figure out who the third was...

Another anecdote - at a LARP weekend, while guarding the gate at the faction camp, I was approached by two players (just having a bit of random character play fun) calling themselves Julian & Sandy... After about 10 minutes, we had about 10 utterly confused spactators as we (the only 3 who knew what the hell we were on about) attempted to converse, in character, in Polari...
