Hi everyone, new to the forum, joined up with the publicity about the painting comp.

Just thought I'd share some pictures of my Imperial Roman army, based for Warmaster Ancients

First up a legion, I've got 6 units of 3 bases in total and I've painted a slightly different shield design on each unit to tell them apart.

I got this Onager 2nd hand from a guy at my old club and it was missing some parts so I made the arm and cup from scratch following an illustration of an onager I found.

Just a close up of the Veteran Legion/Pretorian guard, the command group are wearing animal skins (I think!) so I painted them as leopard print to stand out a bit. (One of the others has tiger print!)

Medium Cavalry

Commanders

General. I converted a standard bearer to have a little flag made out of florist wire and brass sheet from an empty tomato puree tube.

I've also got a british chariot and some "random hairy barbarians" made up of a variety of Pendraken packs I use as Gauls, I'll put up some pictures soon.

Thanks for looking!

Welcome. Very nice works. I like the idea of different shields sign and colour for different units.

Thanks everyone  :D

Here are some pictures of my Gallic/Ancient Britons. I got 4 different packs of "vaguely hairy types" to get a nice mix for some Carthaginian Gallic allies. Some sticklers for historical accuracy would probably be upset, but I used:
Gallic Warband AG1 (Long shields, moustaches, bare torsos. 3 poses; sword, 2x spear)
Dacian Javlinman AD6 (small oval shields, long spears, cloaks, full beards. 3 poses)
Anglo Saxon Great Fyrd AS4 (round shields, short spears, moustaches. 3 poses)
Anglo Saxon Select Fyrd AS3 (Round shields, chainmail, moustaches. 3 poses; axe, sword, spear)

If I was doing it again I probably wouldn't use the select fyrd and maybe take some Germans or something instead as the chainmail is a bit incongruous. Having said that I personally don't believe ancient armies were particularly uniform and its within the realms of possibility that somewhere, sometime a bunch of gauls beat some roman auxiliaries and decided to pinch their armour...

I was going to enter the best stand for the infantry entry in the comp, but due to my computer breaking I couldn't upload the picture.  :'(

I painted on some shield designs that felt celtic, and I've also painted swirling blue wode tattoos on the arms of the gauls with raised swords, but it doesn't come out massively well. Might need to take another photo.

And then the chariot, I've only painted one so far for the painting comp; this is the composite image I would have used for my entry had my computer not broken just before the deadline!!

There is a bit of conversion on this one, added in a wire axle, wire yoke for the horses and reins into the driver's hands.

Fantastic Gauls, now where is the wild boar eating, mehnir throwing menace!
