Rommel had a bit of talent, it has to be admitted, but has he been overestimated in the public imagination as much as say Patton, who as far as I can see lacked any real talent apart from going all out.

I often think that, looking at military "genius". Then you look at the people who weren't genius, and they're so much worse. I see it replicated currently, in many places. It's not that company X is actually good, or has a good product, it just happens to have the least worst product etc etc.

I think that description of Russian operational art is a little from the German "They cheated! We won, really! Well, we shoulda won if only..." handbook that we used post war to "understand" the Eastern Front fighting...
