I don't care what anyone says - an army prone to impetuous advances and without armour, decent shields, or good weapons is a dead duck against the Romans unless it rolls some really lucky dice!

When we played Armati the main tactic was trying to organise your lines so even if the first two or 3 charges failed the Romans were fatigued enough not to be able to take another charge. Basic but it worked
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

The Romans are disciplined regulars; they win a prolonged battle based on comparative exhaustion.

It didn't help that I sent my LC on an off-table flank march, and never saw them again.

Try Impetus - the Romans almost always get swamped. Those Large units of Gauls just soak up the casualties on the way in, the first round usually see's the Romans get crunched up a fair bit then the second wave hits or the flanks have collapsed as thaaaasands of Gauls swarm across them. Sounds like Armati :D

That'll be me trying Impetus then, any system where the Romans get gubbed will do for me ;)

Actually it's typically a bit more of a meat grinder than that  :D

If the Roman sits and expects to win because he's Roman then yes he'll get mobbed, however if he uses auxiliaries and skirmishers properly to break up the warband's coherency he can tough it out.

The new flank and discipline combat bonuses have changed the interaction somewhat as well.

And you'll still need reserves and something to protect your flanks

In any case it's always a nailbiter  :o

Yes, the new "pre-version 2" updates give the Romans a fighting chance which should help! Discipline will tell :D

Hope v.2 comes along soon as it's a nuisance having all the rule changes spread all over the place.

It's ok once they're "official" and in the "official" advanced download PDF but yeah - I suppose a long standing rule system with an active player base and writer gets messy. It's actually one of the things that turned me off DBx - seemingly yearly rewrites according a new list and rules for whatever armies the writers or their partners just bought :D
