Rules for the Late 17th Century...

I started painting my first unit from Pendraken's League of Augsburg (LOA) range: Oxford's Blues. I want to game Sedgemoor, Killiekrankie and maybe a portion of the Boyne. What rules are out there for this? I'm not a big DBx fan, Black Powder seems to vanilla. I know of Beneath the Lilly Banners (or is it Under the Lilly Banners?) and own them but they seem for a bigger game. I enjoy Maurice but I don't think it really translates to the late 17th century. I prefer easy to learn/play rules I can finish in 2-3 hours. Any thoughts?

Well maybe the Pike & Shotte rules might be worth a look. BP basically but for the P&S period. Had a few quick games to try the rules and they seem fine to me, but like many rules not to everyones taste.

FogR is the rule set I'm building for in this period,or BP with tweaks...

I hear BLB works ok for a few battalions a side, but is designed with larger actions in mind. Barry Hilton is working on a set that is sort of mid way between skirmishes and full battles, for actions with a handful of battalions a side, but larger units. I think the basing system is the same for BLB so you can use the same forces. Its WIP name is "Karoliner", and its going to be published quite soon I think. Might be closer to what you need.

Disclaimer; I haven't played either set, so can't comment on qualuty, and Barry is a sculpting client of mine. Just so that's clear  ;)

The Impetus variants might work nicely - we've tried Baroque which is ECW/30YW and it's good, but all the download links for the La Roi du Soleil variant for end of the century appear dead so can't say how good it is in practice...

Pike & Shotte are fun but are very much a tool box and you need to tweak for period flavour...

Hi TP

New link for Le Roi Soleil is at http://www.library.vexillia.com/leroisol/Le%20Roi%20Soleil%20Deluxe.pdf. Vexillia changed their website from .ltd.uk to .com. All the army lists, etc have the new website address.

You could also have a look at Modifying the Perfect Captains Very Civile Actions for a later period for a medium sized game.

How does one "vanilla", I wonder?

To Vanilla: to look, sound or dance like Vanilla Ice. [a derogatory term] :P
There are 100 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data

He's serious business, man.

Although when someone yells "Stop!" I never know if it's in the name of love, I should collaborate and listen, or if it's Hammertime...
