Magenta BBB game in 15mm

Yesterday fought my second BBB game, Magenta, from the BBB scenario book. This is a 9 move scenario and near the beginning the French were making progress from the north and also across the canal. This looked a promising start.

It was at this point that things began to stall for the French. The Austrians, who were now receiving all their reinforcements began to put up stiff resistance, whilst the Piedmontese contingent failed to put in an appearance at all (not great when you need to roll three 4+ on 3D6 and you roll 1, 1, 3!!  >:( ). To make matters worse Austrian fire was now making it very difficult for a French unit in column to get off thr railway bridge, thus blocking it for other troops. These all now had to use the road bridge over the canal causing a terrible log jam resulting in the French finding it difficult to deploy beyond the customs houses. Meanwhile the battlefield was beginning to turn white.

A move later, with no further help arriving for the French an more Austrians marching onto the field the stubborn clogging by the Austrian numbers meant that, although the French had taken one objective (the custom houses) they would not have time within the scenario parameters to take the other two objectives, and reluctantly withdrew.

This last photo is a little shaky as after 5 hours of gaming I was knackered. The game was fought at my regular opponents house using his 15mm Austrians and the 15mm French which I had sold him. As he wryly remarked at the time, "You get the money and you still get to play with them."

Nice! 8).

Did you know?:

QuoteThe color fuchsia was first introduced as the color of a new aniline dye called fuchsine, patented in 1859 by the French chemist Francois-Emmanuel Verguin. Its name was changed the same year to magenta, to celebrate a victory of the French army at the Battle of Magenta on June 4, 1859, near the Italian city of that name.

The things you pick up on the radio... :)

Very nice looking game, the miniatures are most impressive

My own preference is to fight these conflicts in 6mm or 10mm, but this 15mm battle does have a nice Don Featherstone look about it.

Splendid stuff! Sorry your Italian allies let you down. Are you going to carry the campaign consequence into Solferino? Or go back and do the prequel, Montebello? Whichever - better luck next time!

Chris

Bloody Big BATTLES!

Montebello is likely to be fought first in this particular war; however, since then I have fought Mars la Tours in 28mm using the Neil Thomas rules, and next week I am fighting the same again in 15mm using BBB, to then be followed later in the week by Spicheren in 6mm (finally using my own figures) using BBB. Currently putting a 6mm Great War army together for GWSH2's Le Cateau scenarios, after which I will try it out using the BBB scenario, but that will be in the Autumn. 6mm French Guard on order to be able to do all three of the BBB 1859 scenarios (French Guard from the Irregular Crimean range).

Anything wrong with Baccus FPF24, French Guard Grendiers in Bearskin?

Yes, they are wearing the braided tunic of 1870, but in 1854 and 1859 the greatcoat was the uniform item when on campaign. To me the Baccus figure is a waste as the bearskin was boxed and sent back to depot before any battles were fought. For 1870 the Baccus Garde Voltigeur is the most useful figure as it can do service for all 1870 Garde infantry apart from the zouaves. Anyway, I already have H&R and Irregular 6mm Garde in bonnet de police.

What a shame!  If I recall correctly Baccus produced that figure in response to a special request from a customer to do the Bearskin specifically to allow them to be used for 1859.   Good luck with your busy schedule!
