Bases need edging on all the Italian Wars stuff, just realised that's horribly obvious on the photo's :D

Surprising how easy it is to miss the edges ;)

:D

There's always something, isn't there! Somehow you miss one guys face, or the sword hilts or the entire armies base edging :D

No, 64 man pike blocks are definitely the way to go, and having used Impetus for Italian Wars since the rules were first published I can heartily recommend them. Best Italian Wars rules i have ever used in the 40 years I've been playing that period.

I really like Impetus for pointy stick warfare of all kinds, right up to the Italian Wars which it does cover nicely - one of my groups does it in 15mm which is why I decided to "bath tub" it in 10mm, which off has ballooned out...

Btw what do you think about the dopplesoldners? They don't feel quite right as skirmishers who can get blown away on contact, and can wander off at will. We normally use them to screen their pike block but sometimes the temptation to go back down some artillery is very strong ;)

Wot is dis "bathtub", pliss?

It's a term for reducing the size of a game (in this case) so that instead of being a full sized ocean going mega tanker of a campaign you shrink it to something like a toy boat that would fit in a bathtub ;)

Ideally you get all the period flavour and command decisions in a small easily playable space & amount of models.

So instead of Frundsbergs landsknectes at Pavia being five units strong, and the Swiss three etc on an eight foot by six foot board, they're two units and one unit etc on a three by two. Or you size down the Panzer Armee Afrika to a division with a German armoured group, an Italian armoured group and an Italian infantry brigade versus the Eight Army at similar reduction in size.

The. Play over terrain resized but essentially similar in effect to recreate the campaign in miniature. Using miniatures. Miniature. *ahem, sorry carried away there!

Like a real war but shrunk in the wash ;)

And cheers, Andy :)

Pleasure! Sometimes it works well an you feel like a mini-Monty or mini-Frundsbergs, others it doesn't. Either just looks/feels daft or the tactical/operational decisions you're modelling just don't work at the reduced size/rules/whatever.
