Actually, two and a half centuries ago the French beat us and saved the American's bacon. The Americans have never forgiven them. No good deed goes unpunished!

 A sub-mariner friend of mine once told me a story of how his sub pulled-in(?), floated-in (?) -I don't know what the correct term is- to Hong Kong Harbour and found an American fleet moored there after a stint in the China Sea supporting their land troops in Vietnam. The sub found a berth and my mate and some friends managed to get off the sub for a spot of D&W. Eventually, my mate found a bar where they could actually get to the bar and soon got into a conversation with some of their American equivalents. One of the Americans asked why the Brits weren't in Vietnam. One of the sub-mariners who was apparently aggrieved that all the regular British Navy watering holes were taken by Americans replied was that the Cong were doing all right on their own! My mate did not know how they got out of the bar in one piece.
