Nips and dumps (nothing to do with Japs and supply depots) is a birthday ritual I used to get "treated" to as a boy.  Consisted of being held by your mates / fellow family members by the limbs, lifted into the air and dumped on to the ground, once for each year of your age. Sometimes with an extra "one for luck" (or simply let go!  ) ). The mob Your chums then gave you nips for each year. 

I didn't think you Sassenachs would know about this but read somewhere its known as "Bumps" if you grew up in Birmingham? Anyone else know of this or were subject to some sort of birthday ritual as a child?*
