No, they both existed all right. The Victorians made up stuff about naked women Pictish warriors covered in tatoos ; and vikings wearing horned helmets. We don't know much about the Picts but Roman and post-Roman historians mention them repeatedly, though not with much detail - and they didn't leave much in the way of historical records themselves.

I've probably got a print of them buried somewhere.....If I ever find it, I'll put it on the fire.  :P
