That's a 46cm long model...  :o  I do wonder if things like this could be in MDF, which would bring the costs down massively.

If you could get the curves right and not be too fiddly to assemble MDF would be great. Doubly so if you could set it up so you have access to the interior decks!

I have a 1:150 scale Revell Batavia which I "waterlined".  Its about 30cm long and works a treat with 10mm.

Bought it off evil bay for £12!
