I presume none of them were wearing running spikes, to gain an advantage. 
(I'd have tried that......Though I probably still wouldn't have been able to reach the circle.)

If this were on Japanese TV, they'd probably spill soapy water on the floor at half-time.

And the playing surface would be made of really sharp grit!

Wouldn't that negate the effect of the soapy water ?

Okay then...soapy water containing the occasional caltrop...basically anything to cause more pain.

Anyone remember the Japanese game show where they made the contestants drink ice cold lager, tied ice bags around their groins and then waited to see who went to the toilet last?

Sadly yes.....But only as a clip on some prog, that was showing game shows from around the World.
