My gaming buddy and I have recently decided to drop alcohol when playing anything other than small skirmish games; it just seems to raise the temperature.

I've known this guy for 30+ years but, when alcohol is involved,  our games are the worse for it.

So,  what are your thoughts?  Do wargaming and alcohol mix?

When we did a lot of Rpg's we got rid of alcohol during the games as people started doing stupider things than normal. For wargaming we have to travel to the club so no drinking due to driving anyway
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

RPGs and alcohol DEFINITELY don't mix.  It's like trying to read when you're merry, the words don't go in. :-\

A bottle or two between 4 to 6 of us when gaming doesn't seem to cause any problems with any of the groups I game with.

The time we decided that the Russian Commanders should drink vodka and the German Commanders schnapps during a BKC2 Great Patriotic War game wound down into a reminiscence session rather than a gaming one - "Do you remember ..." "We used to play ...." "Whatever happened to the guy who ..."  A detriment to the game maybe but a very enjoyable evening none the less :)

Sunjester and I have a small one during games, and they remain amicable.

We have found the secret to drinking in any situation is to avoid the 2nd pint.  The second pint is the one that causes the problems.

I've noticed that effect - my darts and pool (never great) are definately better after about one and a half. Finishing the second pint has a weird effect. You know what it's like  - you nip into a pub with a mate, intending just to have a swift one: One of you buys, so the other buys back, and all of a sudden staying for a third seems a perfectly reasonable propostion, as does the 4th and a short one, and maybe a curry.  That second drink is the real trouble maker.

Sunjester and I have therefore found a solution to this problem.  We don't have a second pint.

We skip directly to the third, which isn't a trouble maker.  Cut out the second all together.  It really does work.
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

I used to play pool on th pint and a half rule. Could only win sober. Pint and a half. Three. Four and half or six.

Problem is I can't handle anything over two! I stuck to zero!

Ten pin bowling; I'm always better during pint 2.  After that, downhill  :)
