What ho chaps!
Trying to find sources for William's army in 1690. I have C. A. Sapherson's 'The British Army of William III' and 'The Dutch Army of William III'.
The problem I'm having is, despite units changing name every thirty seconds, I'm having trouble getting info on a few units.
Prince Fredrick's Regiment of Foot (Danish unit)
Colonel St. John's Foot (seen them as both pink and red with buff facings and legs).

The facing colour for Babbington's Foot...
?
Thanks chaps.

Hi Will

I know the guy that is in charge of the living history part of the Battle of the Boyne Heritage site. He is very knowledgeable on the period as well as being the armourer on Games of Thrones in his spare time
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

If you join the League of Augsburg forum you should find everything you need there.

The facing colour for Babbington's Foot...<<

Hi,

I hope I can help with some of this.

Philip Babbington's Foot (originally part of the Anglo-Dutch Brigade until, it was permanently transferred
to the English establishment in 1689).   The information from Robert Hall (Uniforms and Flags of the Dutch
Army and the Army of Liege 1685-1715, 2013, CD available from Baccus) is as follows :

Men: coat: red brown. Cuffs & breeches: blue-grey. Waistcoat: light grey. Buttons: tin.
   Officers: reverse colours
   Drummers: blue-grey coats

Colonel Thomas St. John's (Londonderry) Regiment of Foot (1689-1698).   This Regiment is referred to in
Mark Allen's superb series of articles originally printed in Wargames Illustrated but unfortunately there are
no uniform details listed.   Sorry.

Prince Fredrick's Regiment of Foot (Danish unit).   Uniforms for Danish Regiments eployed under Contract
in Ireland seem to be the cause of some debate.   See this article on the Leagueof Augsburg site :

http://www.leagueofaugsburg.com/fightingtalk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2437&hilit=danish+frederick%27s

For the subject Regiment, there seem to be two descriptions.   Grey with dark red facings (Royal Order
of January 1691) and, possibly earlier, blue with dark red facings !   Personally, I would go with the
second of these.

You might also be interested in this account of the Danish involvement in the Irish Campaign :

I hope this helps a bit !

According to CS Grant 'From Pike to Shot 1685-1720, WRG book, ps. 35-38; he doesn't give colours but he does mention strengths for the Invasion of Ireland. Babington - 660 in 12 coys, and 416 a week after the Boyne; St. Johns - 89 the week after, and Prince Fredericks -555, also the week after. Perhaps this will help your research.

Next question:
Next batch ordered, so will be started after vote winners are done.
I have the option to model some units with battalion guns;
Would the crew of these guns wear 'standard' artillery uniform (blue with orange facing and cuffs) or would they be wearing infantry uniform colours?  :-\

Hi,

The existence of 'Battalion Guns' during this period was debated on the League of Augsburg
site :

http://www.leagueofaugsburg.com/fightingtalk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4803

This seems to suggest that battalion guns did not exist before the SYW.

However, there is also a mention in Childs' 'The Nine Years War & The British Army' which
might help :

"The British, Dutch and Austrians deployed portable one-and-a-half pounder and three-
pounder cannon as infantry guns.   During the Nine Years War, the British did not have
sufficient small cannon to equip every battalion but an allocation was made to each
infantry brigade, probably of two pounders.   These guns were managed by the grenadier
companies and they were light enough to be pulled by one horse or man-handled by half
a dozen soldiers."

For William's army in Ireland, I must admit that I would stick with the blue and orange.

Cheers,

Phil

Okay, read it, realised its a massive can of worms!
But I can have them with certain units, they look cool, I'm going for it! Probably only use them in beardy competitions. Friendlies  and/or historical fights, I'll leave them off!  ;)

Well, in a month or so...
