A bit late for any centenary re-enactments but I did come across a 1/140 paper model of the Emden:-

It looks a reasonably simple build. Mind you it would end up as 76.5 cm in 1/150  . I'm going to look at architectural supplies to see if any of the plastic fences can be used for railings.



The hull can be built as waterline too.

Certainly a useful "terrain" peice 

Impressive model. Read The Last Cruise of the Emden many years ago - amazing story & surprised Hollywood hasn't grabbed it yet, especially with CGI being part of the 'armoury' now (unless something has been released in the past and I've missed it?). I believe a movie focusing on the Emden's survivors quest to get back home was released in Germany last year (Odyssey of Heroes). Has anyone seen this or any Emden related movies?

It would seem its the season for 'nautical' scenery. My son is home for the holidays and a convert to BKC, so I have reverted to his much loved and very portable 6mm scale gaming.  A lot of my 10mm roads and bridges are now designed with two scales in mind and I de-based my 10mm vehicles so that they still fit. 

Last night we ordered a Zvezda Kniaz Suvorov Borodino class battleship  (old Eastern Express kit) in 1/350 which I will blodge with plastic card and  1/300 fittings/ figures to blend  to the scale. I have done it with destroyers and it works reasonably well. 

The slightly smaller 1/350 scale fits well on a the game table.   In addition to eye candy (I will keep the distinctive yellow Russian funnels) this model will provide shore bombardments, troop landings and other scenarios.

No, but for BKC, immediate thoughts are:

- Use normal air attacks and assign hits to the ship.
- Use the landing craft random deployment rules to represent the torpedo spread.
- Choose your aiming point then either a scatter die to indicate direction of travel or a simple clock face and a D6 or some such like.

Are you planning on having the ship moving or stationary off shore shelling the living daylights out of anyone on shore?

Thanks Steve.  I must read up on early 20th century naval gunnery, but I think for "accurate" shore bombardment the best results would be stationary with the fall of shot duly noted and adjustments made.  The precision fire of an automatic 4.5" Amazon class comes with computerised  ranging which allows for on the move.  You may enjoy this link www.navalwargamessociety.org  - it has the original Royal Navy 1921  wargame rules in free downloads.  Everything including rules for airships.

One scenario in my mind is that one battle group defending a key port/harbour is suffering from the attentions of a long range railway gun (a Big Bertha type).  They have air advantage, but the gun is surrounded by triple A.  A dual between the gun and the ship is a nice sideshow to the action.  I just have to calculate the defence value of the warship.


I can see this useful piece of eye candy acquiring several outings as the pre-Dreadnoughts were often modified and served as coastal  defence or guard ships . Smaller nations used them in the inter war period, so may be well acquired by some faction in the ubiquitous VBCW (which has spread to my 6mm forces).

Whilst this one will keep the Russian paint job, at less that £20 a model I might well try the 4 pipe conversion - The "what if "scenario of a Royal Naval 1915 landing of ground troops on Germany's Baltic coast.   It might have achieved more than in the Dardanelles.

Thanks Vic, Some great leads here.   The problem is I will  indulge and end up with clutter, unless the boat/ship is relevant to the scenario.   I will probably scratch build a few tugs/lighters - the sort of utility craft essential for a landing prior to LCVs.  Tamiya do a set utility  in 1/350 but its as easy to scratch build.  I have also a few small boats in 10mm 1/150 scratch build from toy kits etc.   Heroics and Ros have a good range of MTBs in true 1/300 at reasonable prices.

Grumpy, if they ever do a remake of The Great Escape Then you will be the James Garner character.

If you want a "quick and dirty" solution why not try the old "scissors, paper, rock" schoolyard game? Draws signify a miss/aircraft driven off; ship wins, aircraft shot down; aircraft wins, torpedo hit. Draw up a list of possible hull hits and roll dice for effect. The system has the advantage that a certain amount of skill/anticipation is required on the part of both opponents.

Wow, lovely model of a great ship. One of my favourite heroes and a fantastic story to boot. If your looking for naval bits and pieces try White Ensign Models, they have all sorts in various scales and excellent customer service.
