as the thing was shot in Hertfordshire I'm surprised I've never heard of it before. Mind you, it was the other side of the county. I too will probably wait until it's available on DVD, since my other half won't even consider going to a war film.

Boys night out to see Fury last night, wifeys didn't want to come.

And the verdict was....

Some bits good, some bad and some terrible.

Good:

Historical hardware, lots of WW2 American and German stuff used, not just the tanks but smaller stuff including panzerfausts MG42s and those late war German Assault rifles (which I can't remember the name of).  The tanks steal the show, especially the late war sherman the Fury of the title, the Tiger when it shows up is awesome but it isn't arround for long.  The use of hardware is also pretty good, there are a couple of scenes of shermans simply disintegrating when hit by an AT round that are quite shocking and bring home the statistic of what 5 shermns to 1 tiger realy meant for the allied tank crews.

The scenes set inside the tank are also very good, there is a real sence of claustrophobia and tension when they're in combat with all the hatches closed.  I don't know if it was filmed inside a real tank or in a very good set but it's never possible to see all or even most of the crew at one time.  It's also impossible to see all of one person at any time, there is always bits of the tank intruding into the shot.

Bad:

There are a lot of stereo types, old tired soldier, young rookie having to learn and earn the acceptance of the rest of the crew.  Pretty German girl (rooky's love ingterest) who dies tragically.

Terrible:

The storyline, it's utterly implausable and the ineptitude of a whole SS battalion who aren't capable of taking out a single imobilised sherman without suffering about 50% casualties.

Overall:

It's easy to pick faults with anything like this but I enjoyed Fury and think its a good film, 3,5 starts out of 5 but like so many films it could have been much better if the story line had just been a bit more believable.  Overall I would definately recomend a trip to the cinema to see it, you just won't get the full atmosphere of the internal tank shots on a TV screen.

That's just lifted straight out of Audie Murphy's medal citation, isn't it?!

Sounds like your typical Hollywood WW2 story line  ;)

He was in 15th Infantry not 2nd Armoured and used a wrecked and burning tank destroyer not a Sherman and he was on his own and facing both infantry and armour. So basically Hollywood toned it down rather than hamming it up.

Fury also reminded me a little of "Force Zvika" in the Valley of Tears.

Blimey, I stand corrected!  Murphy was better than Brad Pitt, he walked away while Brad died a hero.

Umm ... I'm going to see "Fury" next week ... and that was a spoiler!  >:(

fsn if that's a spoiler then a) you need to see more war movies and b) so many of those stereotypes DanJ wrote about are going to be real revelations to you :D

Sorry but I thought Hollywood didn't include mud, leading men with scars and so on. If I want a documentary I'll watch a documentary; if I want blood, guts and some splattered Nazis give me Hollywood any day of the week. This looks great! (ex-History teacher  :d :d)

Ummm, that's a spoiler, and a bit of a biggie, by any unit of measurement.

Thinking about what may or may not happen in a film is one thing, being told before-hand is something else entirely.

Hint: I bet none of the 'professional' reviewers mention this.

Cheers, Martyn
