I remember reading that it used to be a Sergeant-Major-General about the time of the ECW. Is that right?

Exactly right, fsn. Which is why it's outranked by a Lieutenant General. I'd like to see us adopt the Hapsburg rank of Lieutenant Field Marshal.  :D

I think the rank of Supreme Bashar from Dune should be introduced
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Still think a Major General sounds more important that a Lieutenant General.  :P

"In fact, when I know what is meant by 'mamelon' and 'ravelin',
When I can tell at sight a chassepot rifle from a javelin
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by 'commissariat',

When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery,
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery;
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy,
You'll say a better major-general has never sat a gee - "

I think W.S. Gilbert must have had an inkling of us lot.

Being an inquisitive sort, I just typed "mamelon" into Google. Try it.

Well done Jay on a brilliant initial campaign to get to 25 posts, done with style, panache and no requests for British heavy tanks!

Well, my suggestion for Tesla turrets for the 1946 line kind of implied heavy tanks. Of course at that stage in the game, I'd just assume any British tanks were built in Detroit.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Bit of a caddish remark, old man. Don't believe all you see from Hollywood.

Just ribbin' y'all. I am very well aware of the British role in the defeat of the Axis. We have indeed a special relationship among nations. And I served in Bosnia and Afghanistan with great British troops.

They introduced me to Marmite, a proper fry-up brekkie, and the joys of the word "Bristols."
