Title: The toy you were never: bought / given / allowed / saved up for / always wanted.
Post by: get2grips on 07 September 2013, 06:04:49 PM
Okay...so we never grew up right?  I mean c'mon guys, we still play "toy soldiers". (Please note that Pendraken miniatures are not toys and may contain lead)"

So I was wondering why...why could we not move on...why we could not grow up...why the obsession with hording pewter?

My personal reflection led to this:

The Shado 2...the one that got away...the forbidden fruit.

And this is why I have the yawning hole that needs to be filled with shiny shiny goodness.

So, what was yours?  And remember the pics please  :)

I have 3!

The original turtles sewer hq

http://www.nerdist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/sewer-playset.jpeg

the thunder cat car (seen in front of the hq)

http://www.forodefotos.com/attachments/series-de-dibujos/14046d1286565860-thundercats-thundercats-juguetes.jpg

and the gi joe mobile command centre!

http://powet.tv/powetblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/gijoe_mobile_command_center_box_front.jpg

My parents did try to get me these, but never found any of them! They always got me something in return though  :D

For thundercats i instead got the thunder claw: http://theredwoodconnection.com/?page_id=1714

For the turtles i got the technodrome scout vehicle : http://gogreenmachine.org/?p=3858

And the gijoe HQ got replaced by another want of me, a playmobil siege tower i had been eyeing too : http://www.collectobil.com/catalogue/items/3887.htm

So i can't complain  :)

I think the thought of me and my brother having to go to hospital with ball bearings stuck in hands and forehead put the folks off

When I was about 7 a toyshop, I think it was Jennings, possibly in Enfield Lock, had a spy kit.  A briefcase with molded insert to hold all the cool spy equipment.  It was far superior to other cheapy spy kits on sale.

My mother said "Wait to see what you get for Christmas"

Bet you can guess what I DIDN'T get.

36 years later I still remind her...

Sold them to pay for Xmas when I was about 11, most were boxed too!

Hell, yes! And the gun emplacement with British para and the first German infantry (the one with the squeezebore gun). It came with a DUKW, Centurion, M60 and SPG of some description.

It's how I got started, and also why the Centurion is so dear to me.  :-[

For me it was

when I was 8 or nine (1961/ 62).

My cousin had umpteen of these and I was desperate to get the Graf Spee which I thought looked really cool. Eventually got Achilles as a consolation because I got chicken pox and couldn't go to some show with my sister and cousins. Would far rather have had Achilles and chicken pox than go to the show tbh.

Never saw these.

I did have a massive collection of Airfix waterline models that my brother and I used to play with.  The "rules" were:

Main gun: 12" or bigger you rolled a "dobber" (fat marble) at the enemy ship.
Ancillary gun: 6"-12" you rolled a marble at the enemy ship.

Battleships could take 3 hits
Cruisers 2
Destroyers 1

I had completely forgotten this til I saw your ships  :)

Yeah, flight deck.  Seem to remember you spent about 5 hours (was 8 so probably 11 minutes really) setting it up to try and get a plastic Phantom to hook a piece of string on the "Flight Deck".

How depressing, of the items on the cover of the TV Cream book I was too old to want any of them except Subbuteo when they came out.

I got a rubik's Cube when they were first released .... I was 27 I think  :o :( :'(

Father got me a similar construction crane though so it was all good. It was my seven years old birthday I believe. :) As a side note I was never allowed or interested in toy soldiers or weapons. I approached the hobby (tm) in my mid-teens from the gaming and painting perspective. As opposed to a model train layout a miniature army with terrain is quite versatile once it's completed.

Let's put it this way:

Wife makes a shopping list, teels me where it is and 5 minutes later i forget there even was one.

I take a miniature, put it down somewhere, 10 years later i can pinpoint its location to within 1 meter easily  :P :P :P :D :D

About 15 years ago we decided to put everyones scaletrix together, so once everyone had been into their attics and outhouses, the  buying of a few more pieces of track and some new cars we set it all up ended up with a back straight of 25 feet long

That was a quite costly but strangely fulfilling experience...  :D

I have this morning instructed my lawyers to begin to build the case against Mr N Harwood Esq. for opening personal skeletons in closets and invoking childhood memories best forgotten. I will be claiming for substancial damages brought about by this most heinous of crimes...

It was the summer of 78. All was well with the world. I was 10. My mates and me were playing Japs and Commando's around the twon centre of Scarborough at the start of the school holidays. It was a slow news day on a balmy day with my hometwon bathed in sunshine. It was so early in the School Holidays that most of the tourists had not yet arrived.

An eager (bored) young Media Guru from the Scarborough Evening Post gathered us boys together on the steps of the local Bingo Hall, less than 200m from my front door and Mum's place of work - Wright's the Butchers. Snapping away us boys posed in typical heroic stances armed with a variety of hand guns, machine guns, bows and arrows (Who brought that kid...?) and the much vaunted FN which Dad had recently bought me on return from one of his tours of duty with the Aldershot Concrete Company. Little did I know the pain that was about to be invoked after the snaps the young media guru appeared in that evenings Evening Post...

Returning home victorious from the bloodstained battlefields of Peasholm Park, the Battle of Scarborough Castle, the Assault on North Bay Beach and the last ditch stand of the Commando's at the Gaitey Bingo Hall, I was immediately sent to my room with no tea and had my FN confiscated. Grounded for a week my world came crashing down around my ears. Confused by my Mum's fury, I finally plucked up the courage to ask what I had done wrong - after all surely 5 minutes late home looking like a ragamuffin and with a ravishing appetite cant have been the cause of Mum's angst???

What followed was an hour long ear bashing about the level of disrepute I had brought upon the family. How the family couldn't show their faces in public and what would the neighbours think...

There on the front page of the news was our last ditch stand at the Bingo Hall. "Isn't that great though mum? I'm famous!" I then got a clip round the ear for being cheeky for my troubles! On closer inspection, my new jeans, Bought less than a week ago, were torn at both knees, there was a spurious looking stain around my groin area (which was the result of a very well aimed 'Water Grenade', my hair looked like I had been dragged through a hedge, and my face was covered in sugar/chocolate/icecream residue which when mixed with sand from the Assault on North Bay Beach was the final nail in my coffin :'(

I'm going for significant damages Nik! ;D =O ;D

Curly Wurlys = god fodder.
The barman at our collage bar got a box in as a laugh whilst I worked there, sold the lot in five minutes! Always on a constant restock since.
They were 18p in 1992, then they took the crisp joke off, and the price dropped to 15p!

All,
I kinda can't believe this one hasn't been posted already, or maybe all you lucky bastards had one.  But my toy that got away is right here:

http://webdebris.com/70s/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/marx_battleground_play_set.jpg

It was 1979 or 1980, and a friend had one.  We lived on an Air Force base and the BX had them for about $40, and I begged and begged and begged, but never got one.  Via the friend that had one, I was able to trade stuff (usually marbles) for pieces, and ended up with some trees and some barbed wire, some German troops, some US troops, the US halftrack, LCVP, and jeep (with driver).

I look back and I believe that's where it all started...

It could be an aircraft, a helicopter, or ... something else, I can't remember what. But it was three toys in one!

I did have an Action Man tank though. I didn't know it at the time, but it was a Scorpion:

The armoured car sucked because it wasn't a tank  :(

The radio was brilliant though: you inserted the three coloured discs and they played suitable war messages:

Clothes that slowly unravelled;  :(

Hair that came out making him look like he had scurvy;  :(

And a melted back.  :o

yeah...that last one...I tortured him over a fire to extract information and he melted...didn't give up any info though  :D

Never had an Action Man or GI Joe but did have Mark Hazard : Secret Agent. He was moulded in blue-grey plastic (with flesh coloured hands and feet) wearing shirt and trousers. Only his trench coat was fabric. His plastic tie had a clip for his stiletto and his hat contained a concealed tape recorder. Latterly he sported a Sutton Hoo style helmet, a large round shield, a cloak and a sword made from a japanese katana style letter opener - all hand-crafted by yours truly having discovered Sword-and-Sorcery fiction.
