Pendraken try and sell me a modern equivalent every time I log on ... which is every day. Several times a day.
It's a wonder I have the strength to resist.
Those adverts were so inspirational, I always regretted not Leningrad able to get them in the UK. Having seen the figures now I,d only have been quite disappointed though ! Howard Whitehouse has built some nice armies of the AWI figures
Great find, Nobby. Ah, the nostalgia. I'd almost forgotten these. But now that these are before me again, this is exactly how I remember them (the shape of the Roman helmets, the Revolutionary War battle scene, etc.) probably because I used to stare at them so longingly. It was only in later years that I discovered they were flats.
Now, years later, I'm wondering why that speeding chariot is careering headlong into that city wall and if that the cannon in the AWI scene is breaking the rule on overhead fire ..... :D
For Mrs Westie, her memory and something she always wanted was some little monkey like creature in a cup ...

Davey....If you're into nostalgia....Try and catch "The Harpoon"...the next time radio 4, or 4 extra broadcast it.
It's a 'radio version' p*sstake of the comics from days of yore......And somehow it works.
Cheers - Phil :)
I don't remember those ads, perhaps not quite old enough, but they look great. But having googled what the figures actually look like, they look mightily disappointing in the plastic :(
I'm glad my first figures were Britain's and Airfix 1/32nd plastics.
I'll second Phil's recomendation - "The Harpoon" is excellent. So is "Beachcomber by the way"
I had a set of 1/72 "Greeks & Trojans" which were clearly 1/72 knock-offs of the Britains Herald 1/32 ones (see below). It included several chariots. The cardboard topper on the plastic bag they came in showed one of the chariots charging the walls of what was presumably meant to be Troy despite looking decidedly medieval. Clearly charging fortifications with chariots is a viable tactic :D

I've never come across Beachcomber, Ian.....Is that another 4/4 extra offering ?
Have to say, my "falling asleep offerings, from Auntie, while the radio's on", have been a little less than inspiring recently. :(
Cheers - Phil. :)
These are Howard's painted figures - he's done a pretty good job with the figures which ,, err,,, leave a little to be desired...

Why's the cannon only got one wheel ?
Cheers - Phil. ;)

The figures nearest the camera look like Mr. Punch.

They had a Flat in the other one! ;)
Alone in my room at night in the late fifties I thought a lot about owning the X-ray specs, quite a lot actually.
=) On reading the above, methinks your coat chewing skills are required in great abundance here, Nobby. ;D
It wasn't the Sea Monkeys but Mrs Westie does remember them although unsure what they were exactly - turns out they were brine shrimp which, of course, looked nothing like the images in the advert. According to Wikipedia, I discovered brine shrimp eggs have been take into space (including to the Moon and back) on numerous occasions which may be why the depictions of the creatures in the advert have an alien look to them(?) (also, intriguing why the artist would even think about using the tail of the one that looks like the father to cover his nether regions like a fig leaf ... )
Anyhoo, there was an actual miniature monkey (possibly a marmoset?) and it is here in this link (scroll down past the Sea Monkeys):-

p.s. I'll try to remember to tune in next Wednesday, Phil.
I remember seeing the Sea Monkeys ads, and thinking how cool they would be.
I also fancied the pasteboard footlocker filled with army men, and the "life sized" nuclear sub.
Unfortunately, postage from the USA was beyond the organisational skills of a 9 year old.
Much later at work, a colleague procured some sea monkeys and set their little tank up on his desk.
We waited for the great hatch.
The same week, an exchange worker arrived form San Jose, who was remarkably unimpressed.
The southern end of the San Francisco bay is teeming with brine shrimp which are dredged out by the tonne for fish food.
We were soon unimpressed by they reluctance to follow training instructions, and their lack of crowns.
Even later, my aquarium interest brought me into regular contact with brine shrimp.
Very popular "first foods" for freshwater fish fry, and extremely easy to raise.
