Good luck with the storm, Gang !
Never be surprised if we didn't get power cuts here, at the very least.
It's eerily still outside....At the mo'. :-SS
I'm planning on popping down to the village, early this morning, for a few bits and pieces.....Then it's back home, and batten down the hatches.

I heard that it is likely the South East and East will now get the strongest winds over the next few days. For us it's likely to be around the 50mph mark, which is pretty strong.

I think that
technically he was absolutely correct. IIRC my meteorology, a hurricane is a storm centered on high pressure, and the winds blow in a clockwise direction. What we had in . . . 1987, was it? . . . (and what we always get here in the UK) was a storm centered around a low pressure area, and winds going counter-clockwise..
We may have had hurricane-strength winds, but it wasn't a hurricane! Not that you care much either way if your roof has blown off . . .

248km/h 154m/h | The highest gust of wind ever recorded in Wellington |
233 days | Winds topped gale-force (63km/h 39m/h) in Wellington's windiest year |

About 10 miles south of central Glasgow.
The storm arrived a couple of hours (fashionably) late.
Proceeded to deliver high winds from about 15:00 and Rain around an hour later.
Sitting inside and watching the telly I can report that one rugby game was ruined, but our aerial appears to have survived.
Wind has calmed down now, but there's plenty of rain falling.
I think a second blow is expected tomorrow.
Also confirmed (as we suspected) that our old double glazing fails the Everest falling feather test. Currently calm as I write so risked taking out the wheel bins for the garbage collection tomorrow. Half expecting the contents to be strewn all over the street when I wake up tomorrow. Que sera!
Think she has arrived in Leighton Buzzard, strongly enough to wake up my youngest.
Coo....
It ain't 'arf windy here, at the mo' ! :o :o
Woke me at 5, this morning and it certainly hasn't dropped yet...I think it's supposed to get up to almost 80mph later....here, anyway...and I don't think we've got the worst of it !!
Thought I'd visit the forum while the power's still working.
The RNLI have put up a live feed from, Porthcawl www.porthcawl-lifeboat.co.uk/live-streaming/
I'm hoping no-one will be daft enough to walk down the breakwater, later. X_X
It was good while it was still quite dark......There looked to be shooting stars whizzing across the screen every so often...that or tracer bullets. :o
I imagine those must have been particular droplets of water being caught in the floodlights at the right angle, every so often.
I'm sure there'll be much more 'spectaclier' images on the news later !
Stay safe, Guys !!
Cheers - Phil
Yep, blowing it's butt off here and due to get windier mid-afternoon. No rain yet though. Got woken up by someones recycling bin blowing down the street.
Hey, Ho.
Just going outside to brave the wind* X_X.....The 'field' animals need checking =)
Can't decide whether it's a waste of effort to put any feed out for the wild birds, this morning. :-\
1) The feed's going to get blown all over the place, and probably washed away by the rain.
2) Are any of the birds actually going to be flying around this morning ?...Or are they going to be sensible (unlike me) and just hunker down ?
I think I'll put a little bit of feed down and see what happens....If the poor little sods ARE out in this, they'll need something to keep their energy levels up !
* I may be some time. ;)
Cheers - Phil (Take care, Steve !)
Short bursts of heavy rain and stronger than normal wind, but not too bad.
I got wet. ;D
But nowhere NEAR as waterlogged as I thought I'd get.
Very windy....But we've definitely had a lot worse, in the past. (To the point where I could barely stand upright......That wasn't the case this morning.)
The lid on one of the water butts had gone for a wander....and the biggest of the bird seed holders had done the same....few small branches down in the road. (Big twigs, rather than branches. ;))
Bit of damage to some of the slats on the barn......Another repair job in the Spring. =)
Most of the wild birds have decided to 'stay in bed' ...a tiny handful came down, to get some grub.
Cheers - Phil
Good to see you didn't do a Captain Oates ;)
;D ;D ;D
Thank you, Paul. ;)
Just had a quick look at that live feed......Nowhere near as 'nasty' as it was earlier......But then, the tide's going out.
Saw three people going to the very beginning of the breakwater.......and they didn't appear to get wet, at all.
One chap, who I'm sure was taking piccies, didn't get any remotely spectacular shots as far as I could tell.
I'm going to have trawl round the net and see if I can find anymore feeds from around the coast.
Cheers - Phil
Really, really windy here with the strongest gusts we've seen for over 10 years. Our neighbours fence blown down with the posts snapped off at the base. Other fences wobbling rather alarmingly. Not looking forward to cycling to work tomorrow as it'll be a head wind all of the way and it gets funneled up the Avon valley, which makes it even worse.
Wet and wild in the Midlands atm. Sounded much worse last night! No traffic which is unusual - but our fences are so far intact which is amazing as we've one panel that pops if you sneeze at it!
Good luck for tomorrow, Steve......I certainly wouldn't fancy cycling into this strength head wind. :o
Just driven down to the local village.....Didn't really feel the little car 'slide', at all.
Cheers - Phil
Just hit here - cant see across road due to rain...

Got woken up by someones recycling bin blowing down the street.
Was it a blue one?
Looked out and mine was no longer there .....
(Later found it down the street. I had even put it on its side on the basis it was going to end up that way anyway, with the lid jammed shut. It was empty so I assume the bin men had been.)
One of our three bins has gone over, green waste thankfully, didn't spill.
Storm, what storm?
Been a touch breezy and a lot of rain.
Roof is still in place as is the garden fence.
Buckets are unmoved.
Checking out the sunscreen just in case :)
Ohh, and a fence panel has cracked
Just went out and secured the usual culprits. Trampoline, garden furniture and the little one's slide. Luckily i have a BIG supply of concrete 60 x 60 paving slabs. I removed them when i bought the house, but put them to the side. Very handy for putting on things and keep them down!
The worst of ciara is supposed to hit Belgium this evening so fingers crossed!
I think the worst just blew past here. Outside was not so much a shower as a bath...
Popped a fence panel - of one of the usual suspects, oddly, but I'll have to get the neighbour involved to pop it back in. Assuming it hasn't exploded...
Our garden is OK, other than a few pots blown over, but the whole fence is down (and shattered) next door but one. Fortunately our neighbour's landlord finally got around to replacing the rotten fence post on the fence next to us in the summer - it had been rocking around quite dramatically last winter.
Another neighbours fence panel gone. It's just been pouting down and the winds have been gusting like nobody's business, followed by sudden lulls. It's started to swing round now so other parts of the garden will take a beating :(.
Wind's just started to pick up again...having been through a relatively quiet period for two or three hours
Haven't seen anything like the amount of rain other parts of the UK have had.
Cheers - Phil
Hi
Just had an e-mail from my son's teacher to say no school (near Radstock, Somerset) tomorrow as the roof has blown off (partially at least)!
Just wondering if I can entice him into a Napoleonic game set in Germany, that will cover missing History, French and Geography, and if I can get Congreve's rockets in there as well that will be Science. Just need to figure out Philosophy and Belief........ :-
Cheers Paul
Philosophy - a well read officer (hah! They'd be in commerce, the church or government if they were well read, I know ;)) would have a passing knowledge of the classics, at least. Easy!
Seen the sad news on the IWM hangar at Duxford? Roof's coming off, there's a nine mile closure on the M11 it's so big. The Vulcans there, and Concorde, and... :S
Hadn't heard the news about the IWM Duxford. It's getting very windy again after a relatively quiet spell. I don't think we'll get much sleep tonight as it's pounding on the windows as I type.

Sadly ironic. Most of the contents have been tested in wind tunnels but not the hangar itself ... (?) :(
Hope the damage to any of the planes is kept to an absolute minimum. Really enjoyed my trip there last summer.
I've not been, though it's not far up from some of the in laws. Mind I haven't been to RAF Cosford for donkeys and that's just up the road!
Hopefully nothing too delicate and irreplaceable gets exposed and hammered...
Well I missed the squalls that kept hitting our bedroom window during the night and got into work dry, which is always a bonus. Not as bad on the wind front as I feared and hope to get a nice tail wind home tonight.
Quiet as, on the weather front here... fence fixing time at lunch, I guess!
Worried about the tree in the back garden.
There wasn't a tree in the back garden on Saturday.
Friend of mine over on the southside had that... surprise tree in the back garden. She was going to chainsaw it up and dispose of, but the chainsaw's in the shed. Which the tree is in front of, blocking the door.
So now she owns two chainsaws, as a second was cheaper than getting anyone else to dispose of it for her :D
In the last 2 days I've acquired a collection of 3 trampolines - currently gathering snow.
No unwanted furniture here but it was a bit breezy this am
Conifers still in my neighbours garden, most of the branches foliage needles etc in mine and my gutters!
I disconnected all the phone lines, this afto'......
Putting the rubbish and recycling stuff out in a thunderstorm, while there was snow chucking down, and lightning was flashing all around.....That's gone now.....Hoo frigging ray.
Phil (I'm far too old for this poop.)
About half an inch of wet snow has turned up. That'll screw various things up. It may freeze overnight. That'll be fun.
We had vicious hail, then a ten minute lull, then half an hour of rubbish snow that just dissolved and then went. The wee one will be most unhappy unless she managed to get out into it whilst it came down, she loves a bit of snow! I'm just happy to have walked the dog at lunch, twenty mins before it hit :D

They are called one or the other depending upon where they occur as they are both tropical storms.
Agreed. (very) Simply hurricane in the Atlantic, typhoon in the western Pacific. Wikipedia will have more details if you're that interested.

A hurricane is a tropical cyclone that occurs in the Atlantic Ocean and northeastern Pacific Ocean, and a typhoon occurs in the northwestern Pacific Ocean; in the south Pacific or Indian Ocean, comparable storms are referred to simply as "tropical cyclones" or "severe cyclonic storms".

Still blowing like a good 'un, here......But the wet stuff isn't having a chance to hit the ground.....It seems to be going right over the top of us, (at the mo') here in Pembrokeshire.
Some poor folk are in for an horrendous deluge. :(
Cheers - Phil
Like the one that's hitting here, ta!
Glad I caved to other half's "get panels nooooow" and prepared by having three fence panels delivered yesterday. We just had a FOURTH one go >_<
Slightly different wind direction so less chance of panels being damaged, which is nice. Bloomin' wet though :(.
Taking the cat to an emergancy vet in a storm (another fight, another abscess) ... nice
It never rains but it pours, eh.
Stay safe all
Adding insult to injury we now have a leaking dormer window in the loft. Yay.
Apparently parts of South Wales have a Red Warning for heavy rain, with up to 6" falling today :o :o :o. Hope everybody is OK and stays safe.
X_X
Sigh....Not much of a pain then, Nathan. :(...Bad luck, Matey.
Von and I were out at 1 this morning, diverting water from going into the storm drain, (a few paces from the back door) and instead sending it straight down the drive to join 'the river' that was the road.
Just so much wet stuff in/on the hills behind us, everything's just running straight off the surface and onto said road. The drains in the road simply can't cope with this volume of water.
The water on the road was running so fast, I could feel it trying to take my feet away.....Don't worry, it was only 2 inches deep, at the very most.
When it gets this bad the 'river' flows past the bottom of our drive......and then takes a sharp left down the track to our neighbours, opposite. (Making its way to one of the 'starts' of the river Cleddau).....The track was 'white water' early this morning. X_X......That means that track will be somewhat trashed, by now....I don't think it'll be usable to anything other than a tractor at the mo'.
Only seen that a couple of times since we've been here.
Just starting to get light, so I'll go and brave the rain and see what the road's like now.
The weather forecast seems a bit hit and miss over the last 24 hours. Last night we were due to have heavy rain and strong winds, all day, today....This morning it has us as light rain and heavy winds......even a bit of sunshine. :o (Shome mishtake, shoorly ?)
Lots of red weather warnings around here, Steve.....Nothing that should affect us personally.....I'm really sorry for those who are likely to have BIG problems.
I'll see what it's like a bit later......Maybe drive into the village for a paper.....I might walk up the road first, and check whether the 'culvert' between a couple of fields is blocked. It probably is...for the road to be running like it is....Just clearing that, seems to halve the amount of water running down the road.
It's certainly heaving it down, now !!
Cheers - Phil....As Paul says...Stay safe, Gang.
Not much weather here...
That's my good deed done for the day....(I hope !)
Cleared the crud off the top of a lot of the drains........Some still seem to be working in taking the water way.....And UNDER the road, where it should go. :-bd
Some of the others are well blocked.....Can't do anything about them.
Cleared the rubbish from the 'culvert'......That's now running like a good'un. :)....So there's not so much surface water running now.
I had to come back inside, before I'd seen the gees. It was 'clear' when I went out.....Then I got caught in a hailstorm.
My hands are sodding frozen. ;D ;D
As soon as this lot has gone over, I'll go outside again. =)
Cheers - Mr Soggy. ;)
Bloody hell Phil, that sounds like a lot less fun than our roof!
Good luck (and good digging!) :S
Well....
I reckon I've done a fair job...... :)
Yes....It's a tiny bit of a pain...but in truth not that bad......Not what some folk are going to have to deal with. :( X_X
The road is still 'running'....But it's not over the whole of the tarmac, anymore....So I know I've done a half decent job.
The three 'outside' cobs looked somewhat peed off when I found them....I think they were after their water wings !
Now.....Out, again.....and brush as much of the water that's seeped into the big barn, and send it down the drive, before having 'brunch'.

The village where there's the coracle centre is, is on the 'red' flood warning list now, as is the little bridge on the way to Von's Mum's care home.....That's a shame, they only just finished 'repairing' it a few months ago ! =)

I didn't spot a "Dennis the menace" headline on any of the 'national' tabloids.....But one of our local rags couldn't resist the temptation. X_X
Cheers - Phil ;)
Once again wet and very windy :(. Bored of this weather now!
Went to the IWM in Manchester yesterday, and got soaked. Mind you I can claim almost £2 back on my train fare cause it broke on its way into Lime st, and was 20 mins late into Victoria !

Just very windy here....I think we're due for the wet stuff this afto'.....Yep....I'm more than bored with it as well.
Really shouldn't complain. There are an awful lot of folk who have had it SO, SO much worse than us.
I can't imagine how I'd feel to have the home flooded. X_X :(

That doesn't sound too much fun, Ian. Apart from that...did you have a good day ?
Cheers - Phil
OI !
They're making it up as they go along. :o
Am I reading/hearing things correctly.....That the storm, hitting us this weekend/now, is called Jorge...and not Ellen....(Something to do with the Spanish weather folk* naming this one first ??...Eh ??.....Why hasn't it got a Spanish name beginning with E, then ?)
Cheers - Confused of Wales. (* I am not trying to spell 'metierollogysts' at this time of the morning. :P)

I thought it was the blue that was the problem with the commonly-seen "Caunter" camo?
I think this is now the 4th weekend in a row with gale force winds and rain in Bristol :(. Mind you we are very lucky compared to other parts of the country.

Did you gently correct them in your own inimitable style, Ian :D
And if so, were escorted from the Museum upright or unconscious :D
No didna say ouwt, honest !

It's certainly chucking it down hard here, in Pembrokeshire, Steve.....Don't think the wind has picked up to the full extent yet.....But there's a river running down the road....once again.
Like you, we're feeling very fortunate we haven't suffered the way so many people have....So I shouldn't moan.
Genuinely feel SO sorry for them....That must be absolutely heartbreaking, to have your home filled with feet of water. (And worse). :(
Cheers - Phil

Because if it hits Spain first, they get to name it.
That makes sense, Will :)
Have to admit I was assuming everything that tracks across the Atlantic, would hit Ireland and the West side of the UK mainland before Spain.
Cheers - Phil.

Probably just as well, kept the crowds away from the demo in town. Honestly, I know sod all happens around here (apart from the odd Bansksy appearing*), but the hype around this visit by Greta Thurnberg is just ridiculous. The local media couldn't be more excited (or patronising - speciallity of the BBC . . .).

Oh, agreed. I feel really sorry for all of those folks who've been flooded out.
* Another middle class hype that the beeb especially seem to love. I'm with whoever sprayed "winker" in bright pink over the latest one.

Crikey, were you well?!
Reminds me, I must check the loft-bucket for roof-water later.
Roofer says five grand to replace the roof, can't do a patch as the current patch is fine but the sh*te job some previous owner did on the Dormer means a whole new membrane and a load of tiling replacement and... still, only looks to be an actual problem on the rare once a decade storms. That we now get yearly.
"Yay".
So bucket time it is!
That doesn't sound fun. X_X
Cheers - Phil.

Foreigners! Always skipping the queue. :P
Yeah, it's not great. On the plus side we're not like the poor sods down in Ironbridge etc :/
SO true, Matey.
