Title: 2020 Deaths.
Post by: Techno on 11 January 2020, 07:24:48 AM
Sad to start this one already.  :(

Neil Peart, the drummer (and lyricist) from 'Rush'.

"I have memory and awareness,
but I have no shape, or form,
as a disembodied spirit,
I am dead and yet unborn.

I have passed into Olympus,
as was told in tales of old.
To the city of immortals,
marble white and purest gold."

That is really sad news. As well as writing a fine history of Frederick's wars, he also wrote an excellent book on the Wars of German Unification, and a splendid and ground breaking history of the impact of industrialisation on warfare 'Railroads and Rifles'. Also knowledgeable on the ACW, he was one of the few historians who bridged the Atlantic in his 19th century studies.

Awww....**** :(

"Willum" our oldest horse has just had to be 'put to sleep'....

We think he had a heart attack or stroke....His hind legs wouldn't work.
Dear old thing, he was.....A thoroughbred that reaches the age of 32 hasn't done too badly, so we don't feel too bad...(We'll still miss him though.)

Cheers - Phil  :(

Thanks for the thoughts, Gang.

Davey....Yes....He was spoiled rotten.....Brains of a rocking horse, but a lovely sweet natured beast.
Alexander.....Yes...Especially fond of this daft old sod.

Also....While the vet was on the way the phone rang...It was Tony Ackland.
I explained what was going on and said I'd call him back, later.

Tony's news was that Cliff Ansell (Bryan's Dad) had died (not sure when)....
Cliff used to run Wargames Foundry, in 'the old days'...Some of you might have met him ?

Lovely chap. Got to know him when I was on my 'crash course' on mould-making and casting at WF.

Cheers - Phil

To miss only two recordings in over fifty years - and both of them only recently - is amazing going.

Well, they managed to replace Humphrey Lyttelton on I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue, so possibly, but who knows.  Maybe do the same thing they did there: get three presenters to take a few episodes each in the next series and see who gels best?  :-\

For me, his best film was "7 Days in May". That perfectly caught the paranoia of the Cold War.

Homourable mention to "Tough Guys" (again with Burt Lancaster) which showed he could still twinkle at 73.

I will toss in "The Heroes of Telemank" (oblifgatory Bank Holiday viewing when I was a child), "The Final Countdown", "The Vikings (we laughed at that), "The Young Man with the Horn" (steady, lads), and "Saturn 3" with Farrah Fawcett (I said - steady, lads).

"Mad" Mike Hughes....Killed when his homemade (steam powered ? :o) rocket came back down to the ground much earlier than it should have.

(No....I hadn't heard of him either)

Mr Hughes was apparently trying to fly high enough to prove (to himself, I imagine) that the Earth was either a flat disc or a 'sphere'.

I'll have to investigate this 'flat Earth' theory, and see what the logic is behind it.
Apart from saying that all 'space travel' is faked, I'd love to know what the arguments are supposed to be.

They're all nuts, completely out there.  The number of videos on YouTube where folks have sent a Go-Pro up on a balloon, which clearly show the curvature of the planet, should be something of a hint for them.  Or any other simple experiment like the rising of the sun, which would happen at the same time for all of us if the world was flat...

Ah! I can help here, as Chair of the Runcorn & District Mornington Crescent Appreciation and Advancement Society. It's February, so you can't play Ryker's Deviation (too cold) and since it's the second half of the month, half-stops aren't permitted except on a back move, and pinning counts double.

Actually, it's the 25th February, the day on which in 1570 Elizabeth I was excommunicated. That would be a great opportunity to play the Cardinal's Folly variant, where all religious buildings can only be approached from the East.

Hope that's clear.

For me my memory of The Stranglers will always be "No More Heroes" and a student disco in Aberystwyth.

There was a girl on another course at The College of Librarianship, natural blonde, brilliant cornflower blue eyes and a figure that went in and out in all the right places. Not that the film was out at that point but a definite "10".

I was at the disco with a couple of friends and one suggested that since she was sitting with a couple of friends he would pick her up, if we could occupy the two friends. Given that she had been batting away the attentions of hunky Agricultural students (The Agric college shared a campus with the Library College) all evening and that said friend was a 7, at best, at "dusk with a light behind him" I expressed the opinion that this was an enterprise doomed to failure.

At that point the DJ put on "No More Heroes" and my friend pulled himself up to his full 5'6" strode across an almost empty space, took the girl by the hand without a word, spun her onto the dance floor and proceeded to dance his socks off! Possibly feeling she had no option, the girl followed suit. The song stopped, he bowed, she slapped his face and stalked back to her table and a bunch of Agrics grabbed my friend and hoisted him shoulder high and, to a chorus of stomps, whistles and roars of approbation from all bar a table of three, they did several circuits of the dance floor.

Much to said friend's frustration it gave me the opening to strike up a delightful, but alas platonic, friendship with her for the remaining 6 or 7 months of the course.  She cut him dead every time they met.

RIP Dave Greenfield - No more heroes any more! :(

"The last American receiving a Civil War pension has died at the age of 90.  Irene Triplett received $73.13 a month for her father Mose Triplett's service in the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry, a Union regiment known as Kirk's Raiders, which carried out a campaign of sabotage.  Mose, who fathered Irene at the age of 83 (!!!-my exclamation points), died in 1938 at he age of 92.

This was taken from the Wall Street Journal and printed in The Week.

To add to the story, he actually started the war fighting on the Confederate side and then when he went to the Gettysburg re-union, he (understandably) didn't crack a light when he was billeted with the Confederate vets that he had deserted and changed sides.  ;D

Geoff Hurst....Positive he's still going (Met him at a sports trade fair in the early seventies....truly....along with Mike England and Eusebio.)

Martin Peters ?....Is he still going ?..not sure..I think not.
Alan Ball ?.....Not sure.
Nobby Stiles....Not sure, without looking that up.
George Cohen...again not sure.

Ray Wilson....Think he's gone.
Bobby Moore...Died a good few years ago.
Gordon Banks....Positive that he died a good while ago.
Jack Charlton....Obviously, just gone.

Hi Techno

Wow, sitting in the Stevenage Road stand (now the Johnny Haynes Stand, Luxury!  ;)

Those were the days, I remember they had the first electronic score board (showing the half time results) in the country.

My son and I went on a 'stadium tour' of the ground last October and got to go into the Cottage itself.

Cheers Paul

PS I used to go to St Marks School in Bishops park right next to the ground.

Yeah, Paul  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I truly can't remember how much Dad used to pay for the tickets.

1/6d, 2/6d ?......... :-\

It was around the time that Johnny Haynes became the first £100 a week player. =O =O =O =O

I can remember we used to drive from near Guildford and be able to park pretty close to the ground..... so we'd only have to walk a couple of hundred yards. (Bet you couldn't do that now !!. ;D)

Good grief !.....In those days the players (from Fulham) used to turn up with their kit bags, and simply walk through one of the entrances...getting mobbed by little oiks, like myself, for their autographs.

Sadly, I have to say that I couldn't recognise any of the players, at that stage.....I just followed the throng !

Happy days.....and a completely different world...Was it Tommy Trinder who was the chairman, in those days ?

Cheers - Phil. :)

I'd say there are two types of music - those I like and those I don't. My liking it doesn't make it intrinsically good, nor does my dislike make it bad. Conversely, the fact others like it doesn't make it intrinsically good, nor does the dislike of others make it bad.

Both music I like and music I don't can be sung/ played well or badly.

I have at times been "in" to folk, country, rock, heavy metal, Gregorian chants, Native American music, Tibetan monastic music, chart pop and gospel (an odd choice for one who is an agnostic on a good day and an atheist on a bad one!). Currently on a French female vocalists kick.

The world is too big and life too brief to try everything .... but I'm doing my poor best!

Good for you, Mike. :)

With you on that, Matey.

I can get enjoyment out of almost every 'genre' of music....From classical to folk to hard/heavy rock....with just about everything in between those two 'extremes...especially 'prog rock'.
Even stuff I used to sneer at.  ;)

If it gives folk enjoyment.......

(But I STILL can't get any enjoyment from rap/hip hop etc......though I DO have one single CD that could 'fit that'.....and I think it's great. :))

Cheers - Phil :)

I think I've got most kinds of Western music bar shouty rock. Hip hop/rap isn't music.

I tend to go back to the same genres in the odd times that I actually listen to music, rather than the spoken word. Usually it has no lyrics or lyrics I can't understand, so I don't sing along.

What got me YEARS ago, when Von and I got our very first PC...after the Amstrad 'super dooper' typewriter....
It came with a number of discs......One of which allowed one (me) to create 'music'.

It took me five minutes to learn how to make 'a pile of poo'....which sounded JUST like some of the awful stuff that was about, at that time.

I'm not a huge fan of rap generally but can appreciate some of the lyrical and poetic talent that goes into much of it. As with all genres of music there's a lot of dross out there, probably even more so given how easy the internet makes it to distribute music, but there are some genuinely talented people in most genres of music, whether it be how they translate a cultural experience into three minutes of rapidly spoken poetry to a music sample or understanding how to shortcut directly into someones brain with that simple little chord progression or repeatable refrain that lodges itself into your ear canal and just will not leave. You don't have to like it, but you can appreciate the talent it took to produce and make money off it!

The JJ Williams thing (72 - no age these days) illustrates a pattern I've noticed recently.

There's a worrying number of Sport's people falling before the median age.
While sport and exercise is such a positive in our deskbound society, you'd expect the opposite.

A look back at sport in the late '60s and the '70s shows some events were quite brutal, and physically demanding.
Combine with poorly understood training regimes (steak, chips and a woodbine), poorly spent downtime (Best, Baxter, Gasgoigne), and some extremely questionable therapies.
The result was often an industry that took fit young men and produced middle aged invalids.

My Father was a prodigy at Football and Cricket, played for his local non-league team at 16, had trials for big clubs in both sports, captained his school and college at both then joined the army where he captained the Sergeant's teams at a very large (National service era) training establishment.
He enjoyed his army time, frequently being released to play sports.
The training establishment had a large number of NS man cycled through, and the Colonel keenly scanned the intake lists for any proper footballers he could draft.
Over his enlistment, Dad claims to have captained most of the contemporary Scotland team, a few who went on to play for England and a huge number of youth prospects who went on to professional careers.

When home visiting, we would often walk up the high street together, and somebody would stop of to chat with Dad.
Some were later cricketing friends, but occasionally he'd explain "That's XXXX Scotland and Tottenham".
I was usually taken aback by how aged the former professionals were - men in their late '50s wakjing with sticks or walking frames.
This was the age of miracle cures and no substitutes, the  magic sponge, run it off and a shot of Cortizone at half time.

Football has become a gentler game, excepting the odd atrocity, through more demanding on acceleration and stamina.
What scares me now is to look at the ferocity of tackling by huge men in Rugby.
I wonder what future difficulties the players of today might suffer.

Agreed. I grew up idolising people like JJ Williams and Phil Bennett. Who looked just like ordinary blokes. They just happened to be good at rugby. Looking at the giants who play the game now, you do wonder what players like Billy Vunipola are going to be like when they get to 50. I blame the substitutes system. Some players only now have to be fit enough to last for 30-60 minutes.

I'll always think of Connery as Bond as he was the first one I remember seeing even though Roger Moore had already taken over the role by the time I was old enough to see them in the cinema. Another great role from him was in The Man who would be King.

Zardoz is actually an interesting film despite the flaws.

Sean Connery dead?!! Shurely shome mishtake!

An actor who made every part his own ... in the sense that he played the same character every time .... but still managed to be absolutely awesome each time.

"Perhaps I'm not a good actor, but I would be even worse at doing anything else." - Sir Sean Connery

Not a popular choice, I'm sure, but I've always had a soft spot for Rising Sun.

Not sure it follows that high fitness when young necessarily prolongs life when older.  I have heard it said that Mr Universe contenders, and similar, sparkle when young but certainly not when they age. Jim Fixx, who generated the jogging craze, died at age 52, for which the contributory factors are disputed.  I had heard it as an actuarial fact that if you make 70 you have a better than 90% chance of making 80.  This recent trend of notable deaths for men in their 70s seems a worrying development.

I'm not sure that there is a "recent trend of notable deaths for men in their 70s".  Probably a third, or so, of my former colleagues and school friends died in their 70s, from a variety of causes such that reading anything into it is impossible.  The average age of male deaths in UK is 79 so the range must be considerable either side.

About half his "Whose line" stuff had me thinking "I'm sure this is hilarious, but the references are sailing over my head".

Some excellent performances through, and he didn't appear to be short of work.

It is a question of how you calculate the figure. The average age for males at death in the UK a la mode is 86 I.e. the most common age at death. An average of 79 may include bikers who die in their twenties. UK males who were 65 in 2018 could expect an additional 19.9 years of life, so living to about 85. (Source: ONS, which will also tell you the average male lifespan is 79.4. Yes, lies, damned lies and statistics).

Yes, but 86 was just 3.5 per cent of the total number of deaths.  Still nothing to support a trend of deaths in their 70s.  As you say "lies......."

Why did Sean Connery space all his books out? He was shelf-isolating.

Why did Sean Connery adopt a cat? Teaching a dog to sit was too messy.

What time does Sean Connery get to Wimbledon? About tennish.

Knock knock
Who's there?
Dishes
Dishes who?
Dishes the ghost of Sean Connery

And finally:

From doing a quick search, he died at least a month ago....If Tony's info was right, the poor chap took his own life. I probably only met him half a dozen times, but I do remember him being a genuinely lovely guy.....who used a lot of photos of GW staff that I'd taken while I was the resident  ' photographer'.

One death we possibly 'missed' last year was John Humble's (aka Wearside Jack). One gets the feeling he would have revelled in today's internet trolling. His tape undoubtedly helped to blinker senior police officers in charge of the Ripper investigation, arguably contributing to the death of another 3 of Sutcliffe's victims and the attempted murder of another 2. Before being apprehended and sentenced to 8 years (only serving 4) he apparently tried to commit suicide by jumping off a 90 ft bridge but landed on a boat and spent 3 months in hospital.

She's at peace now.

Sorry to hear that Phil. As a VSO in Nigeria, I used to time keep in polo games (getting the best seat in the house) and now and then you'd see a polo pony break a leg and have to be put down on the field. Not a pretty sight :(

Thanks, all.

We knew that it wasn't going to be that long before she had to be put down.....She had problems with one of her back legs...But medication was keeping it under control.
She did the same as 'Willum' and collapsed half in, half out of her stable door, and simply couldn't get back up again.

So basically no choice but to get the vet out.

Angel by name, an angel by nature. We'll both miss her.  :(

Strange that I'd had a couple of Manfred Mann's Earthband's tracks playing over and over in the previous couple of days.
'Angels At The Gate' and 'You Angel You.'

Perhaps subconsciously I knew yesterday's event was imminent.

Glad to hear that, Phil. Only ideas I could give you were what we did when our hamsters died .....

Seriously, how did you solve it? A horse is a totally different proposition from your usual domestic pets. I understand you are allowed to bury horses in Wales provided she is classed as a pet - but you would need a friendly neighbourhood farmer with a digger for that. Nor does it help that you are located at the ends of Wales either. I've only recently found out about the NFSCO (as you know, they do an 'End of Equine Life' service) - was that something you were able to use?

We usually have to get one of the firms that deals with fallen stock.

When a sheep dies, it's basically compulsory to use one of those....We have to have a receipt to show that, that particular sheep is no longer on our land....Tag number required.
Sheep.... £10 to collect......Horses, an awful lot more !

When I got back from the 'Sunday shop' yesterday, Von told me how much Angel had been costing a month. (medication/special food etc.) :o :o :o
Every cloud.....

Yeah, no, that's not what I meant, and I certainly didn't mean they were bad films just because of her presence.

It just seemed that she was in the not very good ones - generally set in "the present", rather than the best ones (Screaming, Up the Khyber, Cleo).

Tributes from fellow actors focus on what a warm supporting presence she was in productions.
One of those regularly overlooked qualities.

There are those who do great Hamlet / Opehlia.
There are those whose spirit cements the whole production together.

Le Carré; a sad loss.
It felt like he might last forever, he seemed so vivid still in his interviews and his writing.

Nice that Frank Gardner, who, like David Cornwell used to, claims he was definitely never in SIS, wrote the analysis on him.

Off to read Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy again - first read it on a train home from university in 1975.

Great TV series. Great film. Better book.
