I'm not sure that there is a "recent trend of notable deaths for men in their 70s".  Probably a third, or so, of my former colleagues and school friends died in their 70s, from a variety of causes such that reading anything into it is impossible.  The average age of male deaths in UK is 79 so the range must be considerable either side.

Fisk was a very insightful journalist on the Middle East and his articles did help give me an understanding of the region.

Really sad news, such a talented man I saw him in his one man show 'Napoleon' on stage in the 1980s, he was simply, awesome.  I loved pretty well everything he did, great mimic, great comic, great actor .  Cannot see anyone stepping into his shoes anytime soon.  He will be missed.

I agree - he was brilliant; when I could get all his references.
About half his "Whose line" stuff had me thinking "I'm sure this is hilarious, but the references are sailing over my head".

Some excellent performances through, and he didn't appear to be short of work.

One day we will look up from the 6th repeat of Joey Essex and ask ourselves "How did this happen".

It is a question of how you calculate the figure. The average age for males at death in the UK a la mode is 86 I.e. the most common age at death. An average of 79 may include bikers who die in their twenties. UK males who were 65 in 2018 could expect an additional 19.9 years of life, so living to about 85. (Source: ONS, which will also tell you the average male lifespan is 79.4. Yes, lies, damned lies and statistics).

Yes, but 86 was just 3.5 per cent of the total number of deaths.  Still nothing to support a trend of deaths in their 70s.  As you say "lies......."
