We have dsl and on a very good day we get just under 3 mbps. The service is only marginally reliable. My wife and I have taken more and more to streaming movies which is fine (mostly) when we watch one together but annoying when each try a different movie simultaneously.
I am really curious about what other forumites are getting for speed. Thanks - Bill
I get over 100Mbpbs at home :) :)
Just done a test on the train on the way home, mobile internet gave me 32.8Mbps down and 19.6Mbps up :)

I can only dream of such speeds! The advantage of living in civilization. :)
We are about to try a new approach that promises up to 60mbps but time will tell.
I use mbps for Megabytes per second for ease of writing, Paul uses the more correct Mbps. mbps = Mbps in the poll.
I think there is a MBps also but that IS something different.
For the record. It's Mbps, which is Mega bits per second. MBps is Mega Bytes per second. A Megabyte is 1024 * 1024 * 8 bits. :-B
Last time I checked, I was getting around 6 Mbps. (I'll tick the 1-5, though.....I'm not sure I always get the heady speed of 6.)
Cheers - Phil
Phil, where you are shouldn't that figure be per week.

I love it when a forum member gets technical. :D =D> =D> =D>

Fresh hamster in the wheel?
In the UK, a typical copper wire connect delivers about 5 - 6 thingies, while those with fibre are looking at speeds of between 70 - 100
I used to be on Demon internet getting a peak of 4 Mbps d/l over copper cable, but when BT went to Fibre To The cabinet in my area I swapped & now get 48-52 Mbps. Not bad considering the 'cabinet' is around 2 miles away over that same copper cable! My upload speed is now better than my download speed used to be...
I've only got a 4.3 megaflipflop brain, so broadband speed over that is wasted.
Nominally 100Mbps on an FTTP link, but practically it's a few meg lower normally. Did get a speed of 112Mbps recently, when I checked.
Of course none of that matters if the site at the other end is running a ZX Spectrum over a network of wet spaghetti :)
There has been a big rollout of Ultra Fast Broadband in NZ over the last couple of years using fibre optic cables, at least in the major urban areas.
Our street was wired up about a year ago but until recently we had ADSL. A knock on the door from a rep of the company offering free street to house connections changed that and our ISP came to the party with an unlimited use plan for $10 a month less than what we were paying. Got a much better wireless router from them for a very reasonable sum and now get well over 400 Mbps up and downloading according to the local speed calculator 8)
To be honest the speed does not seem that different to our everyday use though we have got much better wireless coverage and my son appreciates the higher FPS rates he gets when playing online stuff.
I can appreciate your internet situation Bill - a friend of mine lives in a fairly remote part of rural Nelson and their broadband speed is very low and can be rather intermittent at times as its all on copper. As NZ relies so much on agriculture there is quite a demand from the rural sector in NZ to get decent coverage rolled out to all corners of the country.
We're getting 20Mbps on our downloads but a shockingly bad 0.92 on our uploads. It's been like that for months so I take any larger files home and do them from there instead.

Quite right! Not sure why I typed bytes for bits, thanks for the correction.
Fsn, it may indeed be hamsters in a wheel - lots of them. I hope that don't eat us out of house and home (there is always a hidden cost they don't tell you about).

This is Double Dutch to me. I am not going to be able to answer this question. :-/
I get about 80-90 with BT fibre

Calling them "thingees" will work just as well (maybe better!) - Mbps is the unit providers (etc.) use.
Here is a link that should work to give you the numbers (both download and upload)
http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/speedtester/
On Virgin Media cable, get 49 d/l, 4 u/l.
Virgin media download 97, upload 6.
We were getting an appalling rate through the telephone line around 2.5, it was slower than my son's 3G mobile phone. Some of the phones line around here are aluminium (not as good a conductor) as copper was more expensive when the houses were built.

Thanks for all the participation!
It is interesting to see that most respondents have internet speed considerably higher than mine.
SG - we are currently dsl over copper so ranges between 2.5 and 3.0 (which may be the feasible upper limit)
In its day dsl over copper was a miracle that provide "broadband" internet to many of us boonies.
We are having cable installed next week which promises up to 60.
Currently our service has been down since roughly 1400, 5 July - with no end yet in sight.
Using our 3G service (6 Mbps) at the moment but our data plan is limited so probably going to have to buy more capacity soon! >:(
