Internet Download Speed

We have dsl and on a very good day we get just under 3 mbps. The service is only marginally reliable. My wife and I have taken more and more to streaming movies which is fine (mostly) when we watch one together but annoying when each try a different movie simultaneously.

I am really curious about what other forumites are getting for speed. Thanks - Bill

Just done a test on the train on the way home, mobile internet gave me 32.8Mbps down and 19.6Mbps up

I can only dream of such speeds! The advantage of living in civilization. 
We are about to try a new approach that promises up to 60mbps but time will tell.

I use mbps for Megabytes per second for ease of writing, Paul uses the more correct Mbps.  mbps = Mbps in the poll.
I think there is a MBps also but that IS something different.

For the record. It's Mbps, which is Mega bits per second. MBps is Mega Bytes per second.  A Megabyte is 1024 * 1024 * 8 bits.

Last time I checked, I was getting around 6 Mbps. (I'll tick the 1-5, though.....I'm not sure I always get the heady speed of 6.)

In the UK, a typical copper wire connect delivers about 5 - 6 thingies, while those with fibre are looking at speeds of between 70 - 100

I used to be on Demon internet getting a peak of 4 Mbps d/l over copper cable, but when BT went to Fibre To The cabinet in my area I swapped & now get 48-52 Mbps. Not bad considering the 'cabinet' is around 2 miles away over that same copper cable! My upload speed is now better than my download speed used to be...

Nominally 100Mbps on an FTTP link, but practically it's a few meg lower normally. Did get a speed of 112Mbps recently, when I checked.

Of course none of that matters if the site at the other end is running a ZX Spectrum over a network of wet spaghetti

There has been a big rollout of Ultra Fast Broadband in NZ over the last couple of years using fibre optic cables, at least in the major urban areas.

Our street was wired up about a year ago but until recently we had ADSL. A knock on the door from a rep of the company offering free street to house connections changed that and our ISP came to the party with an unlimited use plan for $10 a month less than what we were paying. Got a much better wireless router from them for a very reasonable sum and now get well over 400 Mbps up and downloading according to the local speed calculator 

To be honest the speed does not seem that different to our everyday use though we have got much better wireless coverage and my son appreciates the higher FPS rates he gets when playing online stuff. 

I can appreciate your internet situation Bill - a friend of mine lives in a fairly remote part of rural Nelson and their broadband speed is very low and can be rather intermittent at times as its all on copper. As NZ relies so much on agriculture there is quite a demand from the rural sector in NZ to get decent coverage rolled out to all corners of the country.

We're getting 20Mbps on our downloads but a shockingly bad 0.92 on our uploads.  It's been like that for months so I take any larger files home and do them from there instead.

Fsn, it may indeed be hamsters in a wheel - lots of them. I hope that don't eat us out of house and home (there is always a hidden cost they don't tell you about).
