Time to call the new years resolutions for 2018, and mine hobby wise would be to finish 10 forces from my running projects. I have talked about these here:

With acouple of weeks off work, and the 2017 painting challenge done on the 13th december, i can take an early start at completing my goal.

Went with a different style of base than i usualy do, tried to represent sandy terrain. Didn't come out quite as i planned, but still good enough to keep it!

They are not in any particular order actually! I just pick and paint what i feel like doing from that list. HAd a new shade of red paint (khorne red from GW) and wanted to see how it worked for the redcoats. I fully expect to really start painting stuff in any order, switching between forces half done and so on...
Variety keeps you painting! I just hope by limiting the list of things to paint to 10, i have variety but will still be able to complete the project/forces in the year ahead.

Your goal setting inspired me to do a bit of planning last night, seemed a good way to lead into a new year ;)
I've identified some of the:
- painting to do
- scenarios to design
- games to play
Top of each list, at the moment, is:
- painting - AWI in Viginia project - last Americans, then Arnold's British
- scenarios to design - Jericho, February 1918 to mark the Centenary
- games to play - Battle of Ligny, a large 20mm game with newly painted figures put on by Rob & Roy, two of our regular group

planning ahead always works. Like i am planning a big order from perry ;D
In other news, despite being off work untill next tuesday, i haven't touched a single miniature since i painted those british last week. Definately not a good start of the year modelling wise! Think i will try to get something done today. Just really lacking the mojo, and not knowing wich colours i will use on the privateers doesn't hellp either. I am trying to paint them all in very different colours to set them apart, but want to give them all a common colour on one item to tie the 'gangs' in togheter, like with the red on the british ship crew. I will go dark green and black on the pirates, so i can have pirate vs pirate if i want, but i'm a bit stumped what i will do to the privateers. Could go with blue or yellow, but not so sure how that would look.
Will start painting and just go with the flow i think, will see what looks good and what doesn't!
So i started painting the privateers and opted for a yellowish light brown , but haven't touched them enough to call it progress!
But in other news, i did order a lot of stuff over the weekend! In the spirit of my painting challenge, i decided to not only paint complete forces, but also buy the odds and ends i need to make them complete.
I bought:

-germans: Late war grenadier sprue and mg 42 team
-us airborne conversion kit (sniper team-bazooka team-officer)
These essentialy add to the band of brothers starter set forces, to make them pretty versatile 600 point lists for small games.
ebay:
-used copy of "wargaming:an introduction" by Neil Thomas.
I wanted these for the ACW rules and to see if i can add something to the napoleonic wargaming rules.
-two sprues of victrix highlanders
The only regiment i still needed for Picton's division in 28mm (the cameron highlanders)
Perry miniatures:
napoleonic french :
- imperial guard artillery
-horse artillery
-2x line artillery
-some command sprues and some voltiguers
napoleonic british and allies:
-hanoverian artillery
-royal horse artillery
-some 95th rifles
-major general ponsonby to lead my union brigade!
With this nice lot combined with my black friday order, i probably have more napoleonic troops than i can fit on my biggest table.

Some more of the great SOBH family, this time to use with my surplus nappy figures, and for skirmishes with the pendraken zombies and survivors!
and ordered from pendraken today:
-2 units of ACW zouaves
-a custom pack of ACW cavalry (6 union and 6 confederate)
- 30 ww2 soviet rifle and ppsh armed troops
- bunch of bases
Although i had called my ACW project finished, it always bothered me that i have no zouave units, especially because one hour wargames specifically uses them! I also needed some regular cavalry troopers. For my first rules i had 4 units of 3 bases each, 2 union and 2 confederate. Now i use Neil thomas rules, wich always seem to have units of 4 bases each, so i will be making 4th bases for them!
My WW2 russians were a battlegroup i had labelled 'finished' as well, but every time i play with them, i end up 1-2 infantry stands short, so adding some seemed a wise desicion. i base per 5 models so this gives me 6 bases extra, so hopefully more than enough now!
Actually i'm quite a happy camper! Have spent a lot of time last week looking at new games (like star saga, swords and sorcery etc...), and almost gave in to temptation, but stuck to the plan for once and bought missing bits and bobs, instead of plunging myself into something entirely new once more!
Also, by buying all those napoleonic troops, i have just about everything i need to replay D'erlon's attack (with some abstraction). I think the only thing i lack is the space ;D
One thing is certain, with the napoleonic project out of the way (at least the buying phase), i think i am past one of the biggest hobby budget black holes i encountered the last years (that and bolt action). Hundreds of pounds went into it, and there was never a lot of room for other stuff, so i got limited by what i could spend on other things that interested me! Even now i have cut a bunch from my perry order, and further dilluted the order of battle, to be able to buy those acw additions.
I always Felt like doing hastings, or ECW in 10 mm, so maybe that is something to look forward to now :D
Or maybe if pendraken finally made those 1940 Belgians! =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~ =P~
But, maybe paint some stuff first, right? :D :D :D ;) ;)

Doing my best to stick to the plan. Just received my Perry order and my highlanders, and just put 2 riflemen and 4 voltigeurs togheter and tucked away the rest of the sprues/boxes for when I have finished what I was supposed to be painting.
Privateers 3/4th done. Think I'll get them finished this weekend.
Already finished 6 guns for my pirate ship though!
A bit later Than plannen, but the privateers are painted. Just do the bases and i'll have My second force finished.
Now the brainstorming begins. Do the pirates next or soms Bolt action?

Here's the dillemma.
The flashing steel project is a 'solo' project for me. This means i don't plan on getting the rules played with the group.It's just something i want to do. Maybe we end up playing it, but chances are slim.
I introduced bolt action to the group last year, and it went very well. Last two game nights have been with bolt action.
Being the one who provides the armies, i have done my best to have two small forces ready for playing (my USMC and IJA). Since then i have bought some stuff to add on to the 'starter' armies i used to introduce the game. Lots of infantry, but also some mortars .
My mind says, finish the pirates first, thus completing the flashing steel project (for now :-$ ). My gut feeling says,paint the bolt action stuff, to spice the game up a bit. If we keep using the same starter armies, things could get old fast.
Of course, there is always the option to mix, and for example paint the mortars first, then the pirates and then the rest.
If i didn't have enough of the pirates/marines/privateers finished already, it would be an easy choice, but as it stands now, there is enough to get a game in, so painting more doesn't really affect getting it to the table. This could be arguably be the same with the BA stuff, but adding mortars would mean "give you more gaming options".
This is one problem i didn't have with last years challenge, i only counted the numbers, so didn't matter what i painted. Now with focusing on forces/warbands, i have to prioritze and focus a bit more, as half finished forces are what i wanted to avoid in the first place!

I would avoid mixing as that can quickly lead to "half finished forces "
As you have enough to get a game in for your flashing steel project I would suggest doing some of your bolt action add ons
I would select a 'matched pair' of add ons (USMC & IJA) including the mortars for variety in the game, then do the pirates then the rest of the bolt action add ons
Note this is definitely not the mixing option mentioned above ;D

Yes, matched pairs would be the way to tackle them.I'll just "go with the flow", and see what I want to do when I finish the privateers. There is no right or wrong option anyway.

Made some good progress on the pirates. Most of the clothing has been painted. Now need to do hair,skin,belts and weapons.
I'll be happy when they are finished. Looking forward to painting some uniformed troops. Takes a whole lot longer painting irregulars!

Just varnished them and applied texture to the bases. Should be dry tomorrow, so just highlight on thebase and apply some flock and my 3rd force should be finished!

Yes, just came back from game night. They already had their first outing. So I painted them fast because I needed hem :D

Yes, but the napoleonics will take a lot of nibbling i think! ;D
I'm actually thinking about making number 10 my pendraken ACW additions i bought earlier this year. But i might just sneak these in and not count them towards the total. I'll see when i get there.
Currently my biggest concern is; base Ponsonby and his ADC on a big base togheter, like i did with napoleon and his mameluke friend OR base them separately. been on my mind all evening ;D ;D ;D
Just fiinshed Ponsonby, De Lacey and Reignolds, and put texture on the base. Letting them dry for the night and will put the static grass on tomorrow to finish them.
Only downside of painting a napoleonic item, is that it comes with more napoleonic items. Song of drums and shakos is based on the song of blades and heroes engine, so I'm pretty sure it will be pretty balanced.

Didn't get that game of drums and shakos going, but started up a bunch of fantasy miniatures for SOBH. Making cards for all of them is pretty time consuming, but I hope it will pay off in the end. All cards have a brief explanation of the special rules for that model. Should speed up gameplay!

After that, us airborne and panzergrenadiers. Anyone got a suggestion for the airborne fatigues? Bit stuck on what colour to use. Should be lighter than the uamc.
Depends when they were issued! They changed between dday and Arenham, olive drab, brown-violet or even green-grey depending on which variant you need.

So what was supposed to be a week of progress and vacation became a week of feeling sick.

So i caught a cold right at the start of my week off from work, and the first few days just felt a bit sick. A few days ago i started to have a really foul taste, and i went to the doctor yesterday. Turns out i blew my nose a bit too vigourously, and one of my sinuses got damaged. This got infected, and the "fluids" from that wound were trickling down my throath, producing the foulest taste ever. :-& :-& :-& :-&
So i'm on strong antibiotics right now, hoping those will get me through, otherwise i'll be sent down to a specialist after the weekend.
Only positive thing is that the IJA got finished this afternoon, doing little bits over the week, when i had the spirit ;)

One small point, there appears to be some white on the edges of some bases, filler perhaps?
Based on advise I got here I now do a final paint of bases edges, it tidies them up

They usually are red with a symbol or stripe in yellow to show their rank. I thought the red woud be the only one you could see from a distance, so i didn't bother with the yellow.
And yes, the type 96/99 was fitted with a mount for the bayonet.

No, that's actually a light bone color. I do my bases with vallejo dark earth texture paint, drybrush with light brown, and then drybrush with the bone colour. I just drybrushed a little bit more heavy on the edges. I used that colour more heavily on my pacific models to help them blend in with potential beach terrain! i must admit it looks very white in the pictures!

Anybody know if this is a staged picture? Looks a bit 'clean', and i think one of the guys in the back is laughing. If not, i don't think i could turn my back to the enemy and stand still as a weapon mount. Was this standard practice?

Today i had the first taste of terror. Was in the middle of painting those straps, while the little one was supposed to be doing her afternoon nap, when after an hour my wife said : i'm taking her back out of bed, she won't sleep.

I went in on the deal on terminator genisys last weekend. Getting the base game, a box of resistance fighters and a box of endoskeletons, another sprue of each of the former, an extra rulebook, the deluxe playmat, an endoskeleton heavy weapon booster and the John Connor and Lt booster.
Maybe i can get the panzergrenadiers done by sunday evening, so i can 'flow' right through and get cracking on assembling terminators!
Forgot to ask,Anybody else who owns the terminator game, or did somebody play it?
I have read it's Alessio Cavatore's best and most streamlined game so far. The playthrough on beasts of war looks promising!
I like his rules design and actually play a lot of his games: LOTR strategy battle game, kings of war , and bolt action gives a nice game as well (although it's a bit "gamey" for WW2, it is great when playing as a group, with some nice banter).
Too bad it was a bit of a "miss" for them. Lots of the interesting stuff is out of stock, and it looks like it is dying. Getting that bundle deal on warlord games was a bit with mixed feelings actually, as it feels a bit like a closeout sale. Always a sad thing if a game (or line) fails to shine. Especially if 99% of the reviews/playthrough's are positive. But that's the risk of tying your product to a license/movie. IF the movie gets bad ratings, you probably suffer from it.
So, no love for the terminator game?

The standard of my painting is slowly getting worse though, bit tired of all the camo colours. Feels like i'm rushing through. After the us airborne, it might be time for someting completely different! (or maybe i can sneak something in before i start them?)
I've got the Terminator game, bought the bigger boxed set with the full rule book and ltd ed Lt figure when it was on sale last year, I then bought the smaller box off a cut price website for around £7. I've not seen the Genisis film so I can't comment on the accuracy of the resistance figures but to me they seen too uniform so I'm planning to mix in some of the ex Wargame Factory Survivor figures and convert some plastic figures into infiltrator terminators using bits from the terminators as the exposed metal skeleton.
There's a lot of stuff on the River Horse website.
Still haven't played it yet or painted the figures I have assembled.

I have the big one as well. Already planned to cannibalize a crawler to make an infiltrator or two. Guessing i can make a "gunslinger" terminator with two rifles from leftover guns from the resistance fighters.
speaking of the resistance fighters, i will see if they can take a head from a bolt action kit. I have quite some bareheaded and service cap heads leftover so maybe i can give them a bit more individuality!
the terminator models are actually pretty nice, i just assembled a couple to see how they look!
So, the models did not fit the bolt action heads, so now i have one with a big head ;D
The spare helmets from the bolt action kits fitted better, so i have added a few to them. Also made someother conversions, gunslinger terminator, command terminator and some infiltrators using a cut up crawler and 3 resistance models. Also made a t-1000. just made holes in it's body that i have to paint silver, and replaced a hand with a pike.
All in all, worked out ok!

Not my area, Peter but as kids all of us had our father's, uncle's, etc, WW2 equipment (save the ranged weapons) to play with. The battle dress color looks very right (brown slightly shadowed toward green and universally called kakhi). The contrast with the web gear looks right as well - it was slightly more green than the "kakhi". The leather bits, Including the boots, where a light mahogany and again your shade looks correct. We had mainly the helmet liners but the helmets I remember had a more blue tinge than brown (but airborne may be different.). The shovel handles were painted OD and yours is spot on. Very old memories.

About the helmet, i painted it VMC brown violet, wich is recommended in various painting guides . i'll try not going over the helmet with the brown wash next time, as i'm guessing that's why it looks too brown. That or i'll re-highlight the helmet afterwards.

Don't know if this is helpful or not, but if you are doing your paratroopers in the M-42 jump suit for D-Day, then it would be a light khaki color, As you can see in this picture the jacket and pants did not always match, but were made of the same material....probably different lots. This named M-42 uniform from my airborne collection was worn by the S2 of the 502nd at Bastogne when he was wounded in his right hand. If you look closely you can still see the blood stains.

Here are some other airborne jackets form my collection. Notice the different shades. The jacket on the left is an M-41, which was also worn by the airborne - usually just the glider troops.

If you want them for Bastogne then you would want to do the M-43 which is a green-gray color (but keep in mind the S2 above who still wore his D-Day M-42. Also at this time they were supposed to wear the new buckle boots, but most paratroopers were not about to give up their jump boots and continued to wear them. Also, they were concerned about the buckles snagging lines when they jumped. The glider troops never got the jump boots....unless they could hustle a pair, but a non-paratrooper did not want to get caught wearing jump boots by a paratrooper as they took great pride in them! The jacket in this picture is the M-43 worn by the same S2 officer who wore the full jump suit in the first picture above. The trousers however are not WW2, but Korean War issue. They were the same with very minor differences, thus the darker green color. I obtained those from a different veteran, who served in the Korean War.

Easy thing about picking the d-day uniform, is that you can always say they haven't received their new uniform for when you use them in scenarios later in the war.

Happy to share and glad it helps, but that is only a small part of the collection I had. Have since passed on most of it as there is just not enough room in our downsized home.. A few things - first almost all, if not all jump suits were reinforced for D-Day. so this picture may help give you an idea of colors to paint the elbow and knee patches. these are not mine as I was never able to afford a reinforced suit, even if one had come along as hey started at $15K USD for just a jacket when I was collecting, but most guys weren't ready to turn lose of one if they had it. I've seen several and will tell you that they had been soaked in some anti-chemical warfare solution and truly smelled awful, even after all these years. They also have a slimy slick feel to them, but collectors want them big time!

Also, to keep things accurate, the 101st did NOT wear flags on D-Day on their uniforms, only the 82nd did. They both wore them for Market garden. Also, only the 101st used the crickets on D-Day.

Interesting detail, i just noticed the miniatures are sculpted with the buckle boots. I didn't notice and just painted them the unifom colour. So, actually they are not fit for d-day :o

Really great looking figures, Peter! See you decided to make them 101st.
Peter, they look good and yep, all the troops who jumped and glidered into market Garden wore an American flag, either as a full arm band or as just the flag. It was also not uncommon for a trooper to take the full arm band and fold it so just the flag showed and then pin the whole thing on their shoulder. Just FYI, here is a picture of the shoulder flags I had in my collection. The one center right is the truly rare one - being a gauze flag worn by the 82nd on D-Day. They are so fragile that not a lot of them survived. Usually only when trooper took his off and stuffed it in a pocket after he landed or had some extras. The one middle right is form Operation Desert Storm given to me by a trooper in he 101st. One of my Market Garden flags still had the safety pin they came with, again which is a little rare. At least thee will give you an idea of what the various types looked like.s

I just find the patches of the 101st the coolest, so i just went with them. When in doubt, apply the "rule of cool" !

That's a high price for a patch! Must admit though, i had a weekend job with a trader in old toys when i was in school, you know the rare old toys, not the rubbish old stuff, so i'm not that amazed by high prices for collectables. All about finding the right person for what you have for sale.

Actually that's one of the things i like about this hobby. You can go to your computer to search for some detail when you are painting or planning an army/game, and stand up 2 hours later, with a lot of interesting data that you probably don't need for the project. Just looking into it is half of the fun anyway!
Must admit i have a few things lying around the house as well. Have my grandfathers gas mask from 1939 in my bookcase, and a bunch of medals. Have sold a lot of the stuff i had a while ago though.
Still bummed i sold my iron cross!!!!!
Careful with the gas mask,, an awful lot conatin asbestos, and as the rubber perishes, the toxic fibres escape.

My Dad and my brother both died from asbestos related cancer and I would not wish their kind of death on anyone. Do not tamper with it, keep it sealed and if you are thinking of removing it, arrange for a specialist asbestos removal company to deal with it. Insidious stuff! >:(

Back in the 1980's I used to colour match dye lots in a clothing factory, there were variations then. Each sample was compared to a "standard" and were passed or sent back for rework, the sample was then added to a card with all the samples on and it was only looking at the samples over a few months you realised how great the variation was.
This was for customers who had a reputation for quality.
Coupled with these variations and the subsequent storage conditions, wear, washing and further treatments, anti gas or water proofing will affect the colour so don't get hung up on exact shades.

No worries, the gas mask is sealed in its canister.
It'w also a civilian anti air raid gas mask, distributed by the government. Not military grade. Don't know if that makes any difference though. will check it out.
Started on nr 8, the marauder warband for deadzone, and was planning to take 2 special characters i had lying around into the painting line. However i soon became bored of switching colours, and it was slowing me down, so i decided to get them over with first!

So as you can see, after the painting i did, i should be at 17 forces unfinished, but with all my buying stuff, i'm already back to 22 ;D ;D
So i best pick a 10th force to finish, so i can get cracking on the rest!
In general, for my 10th "unknown" entry in my list i narrowed my choices down to:
- terminator genesys terminators and resistance (some 50-60 models) this gives me two forces!
- one of three of the unpainted board games in the d&d adventure system line (every one about 40-50 models each)
- 25 mm LOTR goblins of moria (between 50-100 and some trolls)
- 25mm LOTR warriors of the last alliance ,elves +men of numenor (about 50-70 i think) again listed as separate forces in my above list
- pendraken zombies
-paint the forces of the dark vengeance starter set (i think about 50 models) again 2 forces in the list
- get my freak on and paint about 400 28 mm napoleonic infantry, cavalry and artillery! (ain't gonna happen this year!!)
Off course, i initally talked about halving the list this year to get to 13 unfinished forces. so if i want to reach that number this year i have quite a bit to do!

Got the terminators finished. Not a lot of pictures, as they are just a wall of metal! I used a shine enamel paint as the last highlight, so they really don't take flash very well anyway! They have 4 layers of different metal paint, to give some contrast, really hard to not just have them looking dull.

Their trench lines really fit 10mm models (they accomodate BKC basing). This was the last one from the set i was missing.
Also ordered 2 15mm dug in markers. Would have liked to order the pendraken ones, but they don't fit 50mm wide bases. Will see if these look good next to 10mm troops.

field defences: Received the wrong one, asked for sandbag and a log barrier one, but got an ammo crate one. Not too bad, but the log one would have been better (they are 15mm to use with 10mm minis, logs are more 'scale friendly')

I also just managed to finish my final entry for the painting comp. Painted a vehicle especially for the competition. First time i do this. Normally i just use something i painted.This means it is wargames standard. I tried to go a bit above that with my entry now. I'll post it immediately.

Funny thing, i painted the truck, civilians and the sacrifice especially for the comp, trying different techniques.
The russian infantry is just my normal wargames standard, painted to fit in with the rest of my army.
The russians got more votes than the others combined ;D

The first few photos I had published in WD and the Citadel journals......I'd painted the figures how I wanted them look.....Then I got the '1 hour developers' to mess about with the colour balance.
Those would be the prints I'd send up to GW, 'cos they had a lot more 'punch'.
Nowadays I can do it myself, on the PC ,with the snaps I send to Leon. (Which are never
completely in focus...' cos I can't be bothered to put the camera on a tripod.)

Must admit i rushed these again, probably forgot a few details. But i'm very happy with tabletop standard lately.I just get so much more output, and when on the table, they look just as good!
Think i finally found the right balance. When i was in my 'teens', i painted everything very fast just to get them ready. I had great output but they looked like cr*p. Then after a small hiatus of a couple of years, where i just played and didn't paint, i started doing more and more detailed paintjobs. I was happy with the result but had very low output. Last year with my aim to paint 1000 models, i dropped the standard a bit, and had decent results and output! That was the sweet spot i needed!

Assuming the battle opens with the the opposing forces at either end of a large, open field I'd say five to four on the Napoleonic artillery (unless, of course, the purple things have wings or jet packs).
I take your point, however, the purple things are exquisitely painted, but the artillery is very serviceable and painted to look the part.
In the proposed battle above once the shooting and clawing starts nobody will notice the difference in detailing! Congrats on your consistent progress in diminishing the mountain!

I think you are right about the Slaanesh possessed marines AKA the purple things. I've used them once in a game, and they got shot to pieces without doing anything!

Soooo, was going to do all the slingers at once, so gauls and romans, but when i was prepping the roman slingers something seemed off. Closer inspection showed half of the roman slingers are in fact iberian warband carrying a falcata. Looks like i'll have to improvise, or make one stand less.

I've been trying to do some teeny weeny detail on a figure......First by using my reading glasses along with the Optivisor.....Then with the awful mega magnifying lens with the Optivisor.
I've ended up with 'fixed focus' and a blinding headache.....So I've given up. (The computer screen is about the right fixed focus distance...which is why I can plonk this out.)

I get it when i'm too tired. Must admit i've only got it when painting smaller scales though. Poor lighting can be a factor as well.
Just applied texture paint to the lybian spearmen and the gaul slingers. When i finish those bases, that will put me over 500 models again for this year :D :D

Good and bad news today.
Went to the coast today, and there is a little toy store there. Every time i go there, i visit the shop. The guy has everything, from toys for the little ones, to boardgames, model kits and magic cards, all crammed into a space about as big as two living rooms.
When i passed the window this time, i noticed a poster saying: 20% discount, closing because of retirement. The place has been there as long as i can remember (i had a chat with the owner, and he told me the store has been there for 85 years!). Very sad to see it go! I have some fond memories of that shop! Always got revell models when we were on holidays there when i was little, bought my first magic cards there, and always loved browsing around in the treasures (and believe me, there were some old gems lying around there).
Wich brings me to the good news.
I had seen a blister of Boromir (mounted and on foot) from gw's old metal LOTR line in the window, and asked if he had anything else. Out came a scruffy little box, full of bisters and two boxes of the older metal ents. a few of the blisters were from the original LOTR games, and were loose models in little bags, as the gw blisters back in the day were notorious for being badly glued. He let me rummage through the box, in an attempt to identify the parts and pick out wathever i wanted (if i could complete the models )
In the end i got a nice score, and a nice price! (well still enough, but way less than buying from GW now!)

Very happy with these, only thing i missed out on was the mounted fellowship version of boromir, as the model wasn't complete. was going to buy the whole box at first, but as i have so many LOTR stuff already, about half of the box woud have been duplicates. Only regret is that i didn't buy the second metal ent. I thought it was the same model, but upon closer inspection it appears you get a few different pieces so can make multiple variants. Oh well, good haul anyway!

Terminator genesys. I'm also looking at maybe getting the walking dead from mantic. Not sure yet as i also have zombies and survivors in 10mm from pendraken.
I do have a few survivors and my plague zombies from deadzone, so could do a game of fear and faith.
I also have a bunch of police models, so could put undamaged buildings on there and play cops and robbers in a scruffy part of town.
And then there's my 40 k stuff that could be repurposed....
Too many options really!
The last two steps really made it look good. Well worth the effort.
And sounds like lots of options for games on it too.

Yes the models look great! digging into the prelude to woodbury starter, as i'm mostly interested in solo play! HAven't found what i'm looking for though, wondering if it's expandable, or if it's just the woodbury set that an be used solo. The negan boardgame looks good as well, as it is cooperative, so solo friendly.
Cleaned prepped and basecaoted a good bunch of miniatures for the punic wars project, 3 units of numidian light cavalry, 2 units of velites and 2 nits of iberian warbands.

You know, a few moments after posting this, i started thinking about giving myself another challenge for this year. Something like paint 5 models for each project i haven't touched this year. Would be tight but should get me going again.
Ok, so let's try this:
I'll try to paint (a minimum of) 5 models (or bases or game pieces , whatever fits the project) for each project i haven't touched this year. This should give me some variety, and hopefully get me going again!

Yes it's a one piece cast from a d&d boardgame. The base is the footprint in the boardgame. Not too fussed about it but i get what you mean!

I constantly pick up stuff here and there, LOTR is one of the things i just keep loving, eventhough i almost never play. If i aver had to get rid of everything exept 1 game/range, my lord of the rings stuff would stay!

Soo no painting this weekend, too busy making a shopping list for crisis. Did manage to play some games tough, just trying stuff out.
first game was a game of bolt action skirmish. I wanted to try to give each soldier a die and make them all act on their own, just to see how it works. Just had to change a few rules to get it working.
- morale checks are taken when half of the force is out.
- shooting with weapons with more than 1 shot can only target multiple models if they are within 3"
- sergeants can take one die out of the bag and order another figure to act with them

An action shot showing the close assault of a ruined factory. Dice are used as in normal bolt action, glass beads are pinning markers. only using single models makes you use all available cover, and work in fire teams wich is pretty historical!

-sarissa far east village or tower and european chateau (ruined or intact)
- ainsty treasure markers, trade goods, barrels and barricades
-studio miniatures zombies, german zombies, zombie leader and their "not a-team"
comes to over 500€ so might need a good trimming ;D
Also pondering the walking dead by mantic games,test of honour and pulp alley. Have seen some batreps, and test of honours seems pretty bland as a system. Pulp alley seems there is more to do about the cards than the miniatures gameplay-wise, so not sure about that either. And the walking dead game is really dangerous with their booster expansions, as i have a "collect them all mindset"!
any body got any comments about these games?

Hmmmm, Bolt Action skirmish is an interesting idea. If you are going to play KoW you might want to add some wound counters to you crisis list. Personally I'd be knocking those dice around every time I tried to move.
Pulp Alley is an interesting game because it takes the focus at least slightly off combat with the card driven plot points but movement and dice rolling still have a big part to play.
Test of Honor is not a bad game but I wouldn't say it's a must play unless you really need an excuse to paint up a few Samurai.

Yeah it's an odd duck. was convinced at first, but then i saw a demo game by the rules writer himself. A whole turn, playing rolling tons of dice, opposing dice rolls, alternating activations, taking shot after shot, eventually dealing a wound each to each other. Then end of turn, the recovery phase. both roll a die and pass and the wounds go straigth off. The uselessness of the entire turn just made me cringe. So my guess is i won't like it! But then i saw another game were instead of one character, he had a gang of 5 models, and they functioned as wounds, removing one eachtime a wound was taken.That looked slightly better, but i'm still unsure if it would be my kind of thing.

Not really, have enough to paint already, just looked like a nice price for a starter box!
What i'm really looking for is a skirmish game that i can just take from the shelf and play. I have almost everything from the song of blades line, and i like it, but usually i spend too much time making the characters/profiles to really call it a "take and start playing" game.

I went with the mdf, as i didn't have enough time to get my game set up before the kids went to bed.
HAve always been happy with sarissa kits, and the first two went togheter very smooth, but the last two were garbage (the chateau and the high cabin)
was not lasered all the way through, so endud up cutting every single piece to make it fit!

Yup, the harvest of last year's black friday.
I keep pushing these back though, as i have other stuff i need to get painted first. I figured if i get them assembled, it would be easier to paint 5-10 guys inbetween other items, and make some slow progress. The thing is, i have enough painted units for a game, these are more of a side project, aimed at completion in 5-10 years, when i get more spare room and i can maybe install a bigger table.
No way i'll be able to plonk down 30+ regiments on the table i have now!
Well, if you're just doing skirmish games ...

I have a Pendraken late roman army that is still not painted, due to similar optimism. But I have to say you are knocking things off your list way faster than m, so it might just work.

actually i do, i have enough to end up with 17 batallions, and 1st corps at waterloo (wich i'm doing) had 33 batallions, so i'm representing about half of that.
Still don't know what i'll do, represent two whole divisions, or represent all 4 and only have all First batallions of each regiment represented.

One of the reasons i went with warlord games miniatures and not the perry equivalent, the warlord ones are all in greatcoat and should paint up much quicker!

I like how they look, but the different colours of greatcoats took ages. Now that got me thinking, if i do 10-20 models at a time with for example a grey greatcoat, that would be much faster than doing them in different colours. Next batch all brown greatcoats, next all beige greatcoats and so on.
i would end up with a lot of different colours without the hassle of painting the different colours all at once. final step is to paint up the commands and mix the different colours of greatcoats in units.
My only worry is that i will not have much 'rewards' while i'm painting. when you paint a unit at a time you get a 'reward', a finished unit that you can use. When i do it like i planned, i will not get that 'reward' untill after painting about 225 miniatures. might be bad for motivation!
Just make it a BIG reward, these look great.

Some nice models, but some c**p castings as well from perry miniatures. Usually they are quite clean, but the rifle command had a bad officer. after 15 minutes of carefully trimming and filing i ended up cutting the sword of and replacing it with a plastic one. Really dissapointing.
Also a lot of cleaning up to do on the french horses. Normally a quick pass with a file gets them done, this time i even had to cut the moldlines with a knife, because they were too thick.
The warlord games voltigeurs were great too work with though! (liking their models more and more, compared to the perry stuff, the metal they use is just more 'durable')
I'm starting to think my mini challenge will be a lost cause though. I'm just in the middle of a 'napoleonic itch'. Can't help it!

I was torn up actually, dive in the walking dead game or stay with what i have. (Pendraken zombies and survivors, scifi zombies for deadzone that i have been using, and recently ww2 zombies to combine with my bolt action armies)
In the end the reports about the game show a promising AI and rules that "suits" what i want to do.noise attracts zombies, events add zombies, finding and looting gear is a core of the game, ammo can run out etc...
So i took the plunge. Kind of bummed that you need the supplements to have the full rules but hey,that's life! Got it with a nice saving so that's cool (200 instead of 350ish)
Also picked up the expansion that has the large battle rules so that's where the 10mm will shine!

Well i ignored the basket at first as well. The sale lasted untill friday at midnight and had been eyeing it since it started. There was one last copy left in the evening, and i ordered it at 11.59 local time. (so 10.59 in the UK)

chain link fencing was made with meat skewers and mesh offcuts i got from work, so pretty cheap (but time consuming and frustrating)

Pondering about my new challenge for 2019.
Just did a headcount , and have approximately 8525 models (give and take a few counting errors)
About 5035 models are paintedand 3490 models are still waiting for love.
Scenery has not been included in the count. In the count there is also a big lot of 1:72 miniatures (about 1000) that will probably never be used.
So really the total of models i need painted is 7568, and i already have 67% painted.
Just crunching the numbers to see if a 75% painted goal is viable as a challenge!
And for statistics, 2380 models are 10 mm, 1590 are 6mm and 3463 are 28mm.
The rest are other scales, ships or 2mm for example (no i didn't count the 2mm miniatures, i counted the blocks)

I should think that it would be garnering a lot of love from fsn as it looks like a cross between a centurion tank and the strange creatures that are known to crawl out of the Mersey at Runcorn.

didn't go "too badly".
Got everything i needed and killed quite a few walkers. A couple of my guys took some damage, but not too bad. Only big hit was Allen getting bit in the hand. Had to amputate it. Lost the pistol he found earlier in the game, and will miss the next one while he recovers!
Trying to play a little campaign to see how far i get.
Playing on the bigger surface (40x20 instead of 20x20) actually makes the game much better. Longer distances make guns more viable, as on a 20x20 game, half the board is within the gun's "noise bubble"
Got really lucky with my rolls though, will be interesting to see if i can keep it up ;D
