It's because Windows seems to have arbitrarily decided to upgrade me to Windows 10 in the next few hours....I don't appear to have a choice....I didn't ask it to do this !
It works now.....I'd rather leave it as it is. X_X
Better back up some bits and bobs, now !
Hopefully see you in the morning.
Cheers - Phil.

They keep trying to make me upgrade as well but I don't trust it, I've heard conflicting reports on so far. Our eldest has got it on his computer and seems to find it OK, but I'm wary.
My wife has it on her work laptops (at work we are still firmly on Windows 7) as with most Windows updates the biggest problem is finding all the stuff that you used to know where it was, but now is somewhere else, or called something else.
As with any new OS its likely to want more resources from your PC, so make sure that you have enough RAM and that your processor is good enough to deal with all the new bits and pieces that will be switched on automatically.

I did one of my computers a few weeks ago, it went on OK.
I'm having my other one done tomorrow as soon as I switch it on.
I am generally pretty negative about Windows "upgrades" (I was forced to leave XP behind kicking and screaming) but the migration to 10 went well - in fact very well. Went from 7 (which is pretty good) to 10 about 5 months ago and have not missed a beat. I did have to upgrade my PaintShop Pro to 64bit to get it to work (did that before the switch to 10). It actually didn't move any of my stuff around and the interface changes, I thought, were pretty gentle. Of course on 10 you have no control over updates!
I'm betting we'll see you tomorrow :)
OK not "see" unless Win10 takes control of your webcam
It all seems to have gone smoothly.
I just seem to have lost the free c-cleaner facility, which is probably my fault, for not updating it.
What's its proper name again, Mike ? (Or is it the above ?)
I'll download it later.
Looks almost identical to Windows 8, at a first glance...Norton seems to be working, which was one of my worries......And best of all the Hoyle's card games seems to be compatible. :)
Gotta check I haven't lost my piccies...(I backed those up, last night)....And all my iTunes are still there.....(Don't fancy loading all those songs again.)
Live mail doesn't appear to have changed...(Goody !)
Only thing that is noticeable on the task bar is "Cortana"......Can't see me bothering with that much. :P......And I don't have a webcam, Guy. ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil
One of my 2 laptops wont upgrade, cause it wont load the last version of IE. The other did arbitrarily about 6 months ago, it works ok, but Yahoo mail is a bit odd, sometimes wont let me compose or send email's. Mind you if I use Chrome it occasionally eats all the CPU. Firefox works fine !
IanS
I have a Mac.
I lied (apparently).
The apps page is nothing like it was before (at present)......Just a small Window at the moment......probably need to do something to set that up and get that back to 'normality'.
That's going to annoy Mrs T when she tries to look at her hotmail addy in a while. X_X
I'm going to pop into the PC shop in Cardigan, and have a quick word with them, after I've done a quick 'shop' in town.
Cheers - Phil (Who barely uses apps...apart from the calculator every so often.)
also an easy to use tool is the GWX Control Panel, used it and had no problems
http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/
I use either CCleaner
https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
or Slimcleaner
https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimcleaner.php
Thanks Mike !
I'll get that re-installed.
Biggest problem is the same one we had with Windows 8......'Syncing' emails.
I can access my 'normal' addy through Live Mail, perfectly....Never put that addy 'into' the mail app.....It's the PC's default, though.
Mrs T used to be able to get to her Hotmail emails by just clicking on the mail app......But that's been a complete and utter pain in the bottom......We seem to have made some progress, in resetting it...(Took AGES) ........But it still doesn't want to play properly.....So she's having to go in through the browser, at the mo'.
Maybe it's because my 'emergency' Hotmail addy needs changing, as well...Think that's likely.
I also seem to need to upgrade (?) a driver...whatever that is.
It'll get sorted. (We'll probably end up buying 'Windows 10 for complete thickies', before I call my friend Clive out to help.)
Cheers - A somewhat peed off Phil.

I'm having my other one done tomorrow as soon as I switch it on.
Loaded Windows 10 onto my older computer today.
Took a couple of hours and seemed to be OK
Got a 'no signal' problem running an old game after a few minutes, had to reboot. It happened again.
Updated the graphics driver, no change.
Got same problem running a short video in Windows.
Tried to update monitor driver but it found nothing new.
Still crashing.
Lost sound on my headphones, still investigating.
I may well go back to Windows 7, have to go within 1 month or lose opportunity.
I really need a new machine anyway. Oh well.
I had a play for half an hour after finishing pushing putty this afto'
Now got it working to 99% to what it was before...And the other 1% is NOT in the slightest bit important.
ME....I got the emails to sync.. :> :> :>...That really was the hardest part...... to give the better half easy access to her Hotmail addy....The instructions (to a pair of numptys like us) were very user unfriendly)...But it's done now. :) :-bd :-bd :-bd :-bd
Cheers - Phil.

Well done Techno
Ever since the little white window icon appeared on my machine, luring me with a promise to upgrade to Windows 10, my Windows 7 network , which has worked ok for the last 5 years (let's face it, Windows network are never great) has been falling over every second day with exotic reasons - :-\ :-\ :-\.
Will try to put it off until I can afford a new machine that can cope with Windows 10.
Cheers
GrumpyOldMan
Well....
Seems to be working fine still.
Only important thing, (to me) that I haven't tried yet, is putting new photos in from both of the cameras.....Give that a whirl, later.
And I need to check the printers both still work.
I'm sure, that compared to a lot/most of you, we used VERY few of the 'facilities' that were available on Windows 8......So I can't say whether those, or the upgraded versions, work anymore.
(Assuming they worked in the first place ! ;D ;D ;D ;D)
Cheers - Phil

Sunjester says it has screwed up his computer - he's lost his 'Start' button.
I have upgraded for a second time
About 6 months ago I went to 10. Next day I rolled back.
The issue was that every 30 secs to 2 minutes it seemed to refresh the task bar, closing any folders I had open, and making my active window – A word document for most of the short period – inactive, meaning I had to click in again.
It appears to be down to a programme called IDT Audio. You probably don't realise you have it (I think it may be primarily a lap top thing).
I upgraded again, same problem , but now the MS forums identify this as the problem (posts Dec 15)
I uninstalled it (just disabling it didn't work) and problem solved.
Everything seems fine now. Its just a bit different to 7, like getting into a new car.
Compared to changes (upgrades) I've experienced in the past, the change from Windows 8 to 10 is barely noticeable.
Cheers - Phil
Apparently losing your Windows button is quite common.
I've given up trying to get it back. It comes and goes with the various upgrades.
Hurrrumph !
Just re-installed C-cleaner.....and Google Chrome came along with it.....Cheek !.....Uninstalled it.

Ive found no difference.
Awwwwwwwwww. X_X
Windows 10 has changed something.
Uh-Oh :-S :-S :-S......(When something 'new' pooped up when I plugged the camera into the machine......"Oooh which one shall I choose...That one looks the right one.")
Took mere moments to go with the new system of transferring photos from the camera to the PC......(So far, so good :))
But ages to find out where the bloody things had gone. =)
I'm sure it said they were going into 'My Pictures'...But I couldn't find the damn things there.
Found them in the end, and then moved them by a very convoluted set of steps.
Sure it'll actually be oodles quicker once I've got used to it.
I'll have a play with that app at the weekend.
Cheers - Techno(phobe).
You may have a OneDrive account now - they could be in there. Don't take any more naked selfies though.
I'm pretty sure I spotted a One Drive with a 'My Pictures' in Windows 8 when I was backing up all the photos, the other day....and wondered what that was......'Cos the piccies in there weren't the 'whole set'.
Again, pretty sure that I've seen a One Drive on this new system....I'll go and have a look.
Ta, LH.
Cheers - Phil
I ended up liking OneDrive. I jump back and forth from iPhone, iPad, and Windows desktop and it is very useful for working on the same document in different locations and, obviously, transferring picture OR simply leaving them on OneDrive. There were initially problems with getting everything to sync immediately (or even in the same day!) but the various patches and app upgrades seem to have this problem licked (mostly).
Also REALLY like OneNote. First time ever I've been able to keep by near constant note-taking straight over multiple devices.
And no, I am not now or never have been an employee of Microsoft :). Came out of the BSD/SCO UNIX - HP/UX world.
I'm sure it's a very useful facility in those circumstances, Guy. :)
But as I don't have any other devices that can make use of it, (currently,) it's just an extra, spurious app for me. ;D ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil

Funny how that always happens isn't it?
OK,
A couple of weeks in...
It does things a bit different. So my word/excel no longer appear to come with a fly-out jump list (see below)
The 'Most Used' plainly weren't.
So
Pinned major programmes (Word/Excel/Outlook etc) to Start. Just found if you right click these tiles you get the 'Jump' list.
Most used now appear to be recent programmes that are not already pinned
You can Pin the most used to Start - the tile lay out means more room- you have to drag them to the correct position though, which can be a bit like chasing a rat
You can pin OneDrive, and Dropbox but not Google Drive
Seems to start a lot faster - I did read it was designed to be a lot resource lighter.
Like the new App store - similar to Android and Apple app stores - seriously tempted by Catan and Carcassonne!
I have Office 13, so the continuity is nice - and that design continues across platforms for Office: Didn't like the 'Flat' look initially, but works with the Tablet.
Don't have a decent mic for Cortana, so can't comment.
Not keen on way Edge handles favourites - needs to return to the Windows file browser system Also Hard to edit
Desktop personalisation better - easier to co-ordinate, if that is your thing.
Something 'new' this morning ! X_X =)
I don't think I've used the the Windows button (very bottom left hand corner on the taskbar) myself for at least the past couple of days...(that was when I was trying to find some photo's) ......But I'm guessing that Mrs T used it, to get at her Hotmail a/c, last night.
Anyway......This morning when I went to have a look....(I want to take some piccies later)....and clicked on the button....Bog all happened, apart from the logo going a yukky green.
(I thought it went blue previously.)....and that was it. (Basically, no apps menu appears.)
I seem to be able to right click and get a menu up, though.
Any ideas, or will I have to go and see my friend Clive at his shop in Cardigan ?
Cheers - Phil (I have shut down and restarted, but that hasn't had any effect.)
Polish the beads and wire ?
LOng time ago I changed the display on a 386 to yukky green - never did figure how I did that.
Have a look in the display section of the control panel - rt click its about a 1/3rd of the way up the "drop down" (actually up) that appears.
IanS ;)
Sadly, Ian. :(
The 'side panel' steadfastly refuses to appear as well. ....But thanks for the thought, anyway.
I'll see if I can get at it another way...But the search facility is awol, at the mo'....So I'm struggling, a bit. (A lot really.) ~X( ~X( ~X(
Cheers - Phil.

From a gander round helpful sites.....I'm not even sure that Windows 10 HAS a 'side panel', anymore (?).
Can't say that I've ever tried to use it since '10' arrived....So I can't be sure.
The lass in the computer shop tried to give me a possible short cut to try and fix things......Got half way through that (once home).....But then couldn't find the next screen to do the last half of the gubbins......Gave up. So I don't know whether it
would have fixed the problem.
Took a photo of the Aztecs, I wanted to send to Leon today.
Well, that loaded onto the PC......'Cos the app (?) temporarily came up......But after that I can't get at, it or find it anywhere.
Industrial language time !!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Just have to wait until Matey comes round next week. X_X
Cheers - Mr Completely Teed-Off.
Ok - try searching in the "Search the web and Windows" box. You saying the windows button on the extreme left - white on grey anit there ?
IanS
It's the one in the very bottom, left hand corner Ian. (On the taskbar.)
Yes....It's there......If I clicked on it before, the symbol went from white/light gray to blue, and a quarter (?) of a page window came up with the apps....or a list of the apps, which I could scroll down.
Now, basically.....Nothing happens at all....
Except that the icon changes to a yukky green colour and sits there mocking me. ;)
I can right click on the icon and get a list of commands.....But if I try the 'search' one....There's nothing more that happens.
Cheers - Phil
Windows 10?
This happened to me. I googled the response, fixed it. Switched off pc then next time I switched on... button disappeared again.
My button hasn't actually disappeared, Nobby....It just doesn't do anything, since this morning.
(Apart from going green).
And to think a few days ago, on a survey, I told Microsoft that I was quite impressed with the new system......And gave it four out of five 'stars'.
I'd be pushing it to give it a single point, the way I feel today.
Cheers - Phil

Ta Andy.
Might have a go at a couple of those later.
I tried one 'powershell' fix yesterday, where I was typing in code.
All that seemed to do was run a full diagnostic to look for bugs....Which it didn't find, so I didn't go to the next step, as there didn't appear to be any to fix.
I can still get at the important 'things' I mostly use this PC for...(At least, at the moment)..Though in some somewhat roundabout and irritating ways, so I can live with it until Matey comes round from the computer shop.
Nobby's told me that his machine has this same sort of problem on a fairly regular basis.
Sometimes it plays nicely...Other times it doesn't.

I work on them most days and it can be hard work. I've only recently upgraded to windows 10 although I'm finding it relatively easy to get used to. There's still that learning curve.
But to be honest I was perfectly happy with xp it did everything I wanted and as far as I was concerned it wasn't broke
Take care

I can certainly 'get by' with what I've got, Andy.
It's just the continuous hiccoughs this new system seems to chuck at you.
Took me about a week to feel comfortable, changing from XP to Windows 8....and I really liked Windows 8.
Windows 10 doesn't appear to be far removed 8, which is why I feel so frustrated when something goes 'pop'.
The Hoyle's card games have also thrown a wobbly this morning, and won't work.
That's probably NOT down to Windows.....It seems the games have a hissy fit every so often.....Usually (I think)....When Norton does some sort of update.....Though not every time.
I can usually correct that by uninstalling.....then reinstalling. Though sometimes it won't do that properly for a few days.
Hey Ho :(..... I'm sure it'll settle down at some stage.

Makes me feel lucky that I've not had any problems with upgrading to Windows 10 though I want to set up a dual boot now with Linux.
Like I've said elsewhere, Dave.
It seems that on some PCs it works (seems to work) as a really good upgrade......And on others, it causes oodles of problems, and leaves folk tearing their hair out.
I'm still avoiding it (For a second time) like the plague.

I had terrible problems after upgrading my Mac from Snow Leopard to Yosemite. As a consequence I was wary about upgrading to El Capitan, but eventually decided that it couldn't really make things worse. It's been a great improvement and my computer is behaving almost like new again.
Apart from the little problem that a programme I didn't know I had was causing (as mentioned elsewhere), 10 is fine on my 5 year old laptop.

Only on FSN on this Forum gets that response - you never see 'Sod Off' on other boards!
I believe on TMP it's more like, 'Sir, would you please decline from such insinuations.'
I have disabled(hopefully) the windows 10 upgrade.
After using Microsoft products since DOS 5 was introduced I am of the opinion that for the first 18 months after its release you are still Beta testing the software. Hence I am still running Windows 7 and have an XP emulator on it to run stiff I still like ie Allied General.
A lot of people are sure it's being given away free, for free Beta Testing for Microsoft.
Certainly heard that before, Mark.
Hope you've managed to disable the upgrade, Matey.
