Just to start the ball rolling, a couple of obvious ones.
Of course you can use miniatures from Manufaturer XYZ on our games table!
We think 18 figures in a Unit is about right.
Coar D'arms Paints ae the same as the old Citadel paints.
Polyhedral dice? Of course sir :)
The sound of an air freshner or can of deodrant being used
"Would sir simply like to browse."
Cheers - Phil

You beat me to it :)
"Of course I have a girlfriend!"
- Neil.
Yes, figure XXXX would be a nice proxy for that troop type, at half the price.
Sure you can still play warmaster in the store, even if you use pendraken miniatures!
If we're talking things the staff would say then my recent experience is they don't say much because they're too busy trying to ring something through the till, restock the shelves, keep an eye on the dodgy customer wearing a heavy overcoat when everyone else is dying of heat stroke, pointing kiddies at the new stuff, reassuring granny that little Johnny isn't about to become a practising devil worshipper if he plays a game involving demons, etc., etc. - all simultaneously!
These days if you breeze in with a cheery,"Hi! just looking for some bits and pieces for use with my 1895 Ruritanian Janitors War armies," they tend to back away and leave you to it.
"Well Sun Zsu said it first, but I like von Clausewitz's stance ..."
"Scarlet. Just plain scarlet."
Said it before, say it again - always found the Aylesbury staff very helpful. Helped me find Tawny Orange for WotR (Roses, not their one)
I don't have a local WG shop but if I found one when I was away I'd always go in and when pounced upon and asked what I played would respond with Warmaster..... Ancients which they'd sort of heard of, then rattle of a couple of other 'Specialist or Historic Games' and go on to other historic rulesets getting more obscure "the Russio Japanese War is very interesting.....", being sure to get in phrases "there's loads of other stuff out there which I prefer".
If I was disturbed looking at paints I always asked for Dark Angels Green which invariably prompted some question about the chapter (or is it verse) and an attempt to sell me the latest releases. After a couple of minutes I'd explain I didn't own ANY GW figures (not quite true, I've some plastic skeletons) but that Dark Angels Green was perfect for Ottoman/Arab armies.
These days I just feel sorry for the poor bloke trying to cope with a shop on his own, so don't bother teasing him.
A small and guiltily enjoyable pleasure has now left my life. :(
"Hey, old guy! What are you doing in here?"
... well, not to your face.
...or "Are you buying for your son", this when accompanied by my two, very obviously female teenage daughters!
Management have settled on the latest edition of the game and won't relaunch it again this century.

I don't understand what you're saying here.
A: I am buying paints and brushes for me.
B: I don't have a son, just the two lovely teenage daughters.
C: The main inferral seemed to be that I am too old to be buying stuff from their shop. Still, I suppose he could have asked if I was buying for my Grandson!
:)
or C: Teenage girls don't play GW games but teenage boys do? #everydaysexism

No sexism at all, we all know they hang out with the cool guys that do historicals....

"Games Workshop employees are trained to sell things in a very specific way, and, unfortunately it is aimed almost exclusively at men, and the staff do not realise that their over-friendliness and general zest is terrifying to most women."
Then why wouldn't you hear that query?

I think its more likely their lack of personal higene puts the women off.

I'm pals with the local GW store manager and his wife walked in just after me one day and said "It smells like old sweat and virgins in here!" ;D
"I think Zandari Dust may just be the Dunkelgelb you're looking for to paint your Panthers!"
Those M3 'tracks look awesome with your Guard infantry!
Things you would never hear in a Games Workshop / Warhammer Shop?
"No thank you, I don't play Warhammer, although I can see why you would make that assumption, as I have chosen to walk into a shop that I know is tied to Games Workshop, whose major products are the two Warhammer brands. Nor will I moan on line later that you tried to sell me things, given that is the purpose of a shop, and the reason you are employed. To do so would be like walking into Burger King and being surprised they won't sell me a Big Mac."

This is messing with my head. :-\
"Hey guys, are you as psyched for the new edition of Kings of War as I am?"
"Hah, the Necrons are totally based on Terminator"
"We've set up a table for Warhammer Historics players in the back"
"You know, I think our settings might be a little too dark..."
"Have you ever considered skirmish gaming? More fun with less miniatures. We've even got our own rules, Killteam. You only need a couple boxes of basic troops to play"
"They ought to bring back Warmaster and Epic. Man, those were really the days!"
I've been in one GW shop in my life, while I was visiting Edinburgh. Funny thing is, the sole staffer didn't say a word to me. Too busy watching tweens argue the virtues of different load-outs for Space Marine Sergeants to chat with the foreigner peeking at the Reiksguard Knights (End Times was still in full swing) and the woefully undersized Black Library section. Which is fine by me ;)
I was in a local one yesterday. The owner and a group of the-like minded were playing Diplomacy in a back room (my first game in over a decade and I got Italy :'( :'(), but the main shop was a Siamese Nerdistan.
