Title: Pendraken rhino models -Good for East Africa WW1?
Post by: noel zaal on 13 August 2015, 11:48:17 AM
Hi

I need some wild animals for my WW1 East Africa games.  I see Pendraken makes a model of a rhino, but it is listed under fantasy.  Does this mean it is not meant as a realistic model? EG is it oversized or something?  Or is it a real world, correct scale accurate rhino that I could use some of in East Africa WW1??

Thanks!

Hi Noel.

First of all..A very warm welcome to the forum.

Regarding the rhino.....
As I've never seen a real rhino 'up close' I can't really answer your question accurately.

If I had to guess.....I'd say it was a little on the large side to go with 'historical' models...But don't take my word for that !

Cheers - Phil.

Greetings, Professor Zaal. I'm interested to see that you've tracked me down to my primary wargames site. You haven't converted to 10mm, have you?
Fierce Kitty (aka Alexander in Bangkok).

Hello and welcome  :-h

I'm going to have to say possibly not! It most closely resembles an Indian rhino in size, shape and having only one horn! However, if you're willing to give it a rhinoplasty and overlook the general difference in profile you might be okay ;)

There are more photos in my painting diary - http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,3872.msg86721.html#msg86721 (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,3872.msg86721.html#msg86721) - but these should give you the general idea:

Unfortunately I don't think I've got any next to a human, fantasy or otherwise!

Cheers,

Meirion

Should be East African Black Rhino, a sub-species of the Southern Black rhino.  The black rhino is distinguished from the white by a pointed top lip.  So may have to get the files out.  BTW the name 'white' for the rhino is a corruption of the Afrikaans word meaning wide, as the top lip on this species is square, rather than pointed. :-B :-B ;) :D

They were from here

They look about right.

Not a great photo, but here's the rhino next to a couple of ancient Indian tribesmen:

The rhino is on a 40x20mm base.

Cheers!
