The Radio Times says that this series will be coming to BBC4 in the Spring :). Can't wait as the clips someone posted last year via Youtube look great. Should be subtitles as well which I prefer.
:-bd
Might be the incentive I need to finish my forces for this conflict.
As I have the Bruce Weigle books this will be of particular interest to me. I also have a cunning plan to game this with minimal effort, but details to follow later in the month...
Ohhh!
I'm on 3x30x40mm bases...
In case our forces ever meet!
I'll keep an eye out for that.
An excuse to buy more Irregular 6mm Sardinians and this time paint them as Danes.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'll get my coat... :D

Anyone else fed up with the BBC saying that 1864 is coming soon? Just tell us when :(
Sunday 16th May.
I've seen it and I can recommend it, as it was aired in Finland a while back. It caused quite a controversy back in Denmark as the producers are not creating a traditional "ooh, mr darcy" type costume drama, they are jumping back and forth between the present and the past and handling some of the historical Danish figures very roughly indeed.
Word of warning if you are looking for epic battle scenes - the series builds up towards the brutal stuff over six or so episodes.
Incidentally, I was at Copenhagen a few weeks ago, and they still had in the National Museum the Danish-German exhibition of the 1864 war. Especially interesting to see the 1850s vintage weapons both sides had - the Danes had muzzle loaders, while the Prussians had breech loaders.
Anyway, if you want to understand the mindset of the Danish nation, definitely worth a try. Spoiler alert: There is even a scene with Bismarck and Moltke enjoying a bit of Floor Gaming :D
Cheers,
Aksu

Spring, LOL, snowing here yesterday.
Just seen trailer for this. Must be pretty soon.

Sunday 16th May.
Brill. I will probably record it as Ma Subs commandeers the TV on Sunday evenings. No probs, more time for wargamey things for me.
Knowing my luck with me not being much of a telly watcher, unless others put stuff like this on the forum, I would very probably have missed it.
Well spotted Sub, nobody else seems to have clocked that post.
English site is up!

I appear to have misheard someone, as it is Saturday 16th BBC 4 9pm for 1864, and Sunday 17th BBC 1 9pm for Jonathan Strange and Mr.Norrel, using magic as a weapon to defeat Napoleon, apparently. Sounds worth a watch.
Looking forward to the BBC America production of Bernard Cornwell Saxon Chronicles as well

The trailers for that have
definitely piqued my interest. :)....Looks like my 'cup of tea'.

Any news of dates for that, Steve ?
Cheers - Phil.
I think they are still filming
That Saxon Chronicles one sounds like it will be a good watch. Have enjoyed Vikings immensely and decided to google some of the characters in it. It appears that this adaptation is an amalgam of different episodes from the Viking period, put together to form a coherent story, so narrative history it is not, but a collection of historical stories, well, maybe, eg a Rollo did become first Duke of Normandy; a city was captured by Bjorn Ironside in Italy in the way that the capture of Paris by Ragnar is depicted. Still can't live with the soldiers of Wessex in burgonets though.
I wish it was the Winter King but hopefully that might be soon (though I doubt it)
Sounds like it'll be worth a gander though ! :)
Thanks for the info, chaps !
Cheers - Phil
Two episodes, back to back!

Finally some good telly for a Saturday night! I will probably record it as well just in case I fall asleep :-[.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell looks like it may lead to a new project :D
A new twist on Fantasy Napoleonic - no more British Orcs?
QuoteJonathan Strange & Mr Norrell looks like it may lead to a new project
This looks interesting. There's a piece about it in the Radio Times as well as 1864, so a nice bit of light reading later.
Watched first two episodes of 1864, and really enjoyed it. Not got to the war yet, but lots of interesting background, beautiful photography, and good acting. I enjoyed the scene with Bismarck, his sons and Moltke with their toy soldiers, but couldn't avoid letting the geek in me get the upper hand. Moltke with a moustache? Had the researcher got hold of a photo of the wrong Moltke (Helmut the Younger) on which to base the look of the character? Bismarck's sons , Bill and Herbert, should be about 11 and 14 when war breaks out, so even if the scene is intended to show some months earlier, aren't they a bit young? Oh dear. I'll get my anorak!

Will catch up later today. Looking forward to getting a general feel of the landscape and houses etc for my First Schleswig-Holstein campaign.
Have it recorded, have the armies (semi painted), dreading watching as I know I'll end up diverting from other projects! :D
It's worth a watch and it'll be interesting to see where the two time periods coincide.
Funny to watch the cultural differences regarding...um...the contents of jars.
Overall a good start, but it would have been nice to see some flashback battle scenes to perk things up a bit. By the end of episaode 2 i was losing interest.
The shooting is really episodes 5,6,7. 7 is Dybbol. It is glorious.
Bit disappointed they couldn't get Von Moltke right FFS, I mean how difficult is it, one shrivelled, bald, wig wearing old reptile without facial hair, grrrrr. Apart from that, looking forward to the big battle scenes. Did anyone spot the similarity between Mollinary and the Danish officer giving the men a pep talk at the end of episode 2, uncanny resemblance doncha think ;)

Yep, myself and SWMBO enjoyed it immensely :). Nice to have some good telly to watch as the silly season beckons with this and 1864.

Really enjoyed the first episode. Good to see Rochefort resurrected as another bad(?) guy. The review I read said that the Battle of Waterloo with magic is very stylishly done.
Certainly enjoyed it, good spec effects.

If anyone was interested in gaming this war, I have Mike Embree's book 'Bismark's First War' which I could let you have for £30 + postage.
It is an excellent book, I just never got round to war gaming the period.
Chad
I have the armies Chad...
No probs mate
Chad
Just got to get the enthusiasm together to be paint them...
Maybe when I get time to finally watch 1864! ;D
As Mollinary would say, are you good enough for the cigar? OK, did anyone spot the musical anachronism in Saturday's episode?
Playing Preussen's Gloria, which was not written until after the FPW, perhaps? :-\ 8)

No.
Did I really see the retreating Danes get through the Prussian lines by hypnosis? :o I thought this was a bit silly.
I dont know anything about the period but I am enjoying it
Nope, any other takers?
Well then, I suppose you are referring to the playing of the Koniggratzer Marsch? But then, what is one minor error among so many? I bet you didn't even notice the succession of howlers committed in the pickelhauben department? :o :o
Mollinary
Correct, give the man a cigar (preferably of the cheap variety :P )
Well I am a couple of episodes behind but am enjoying it so far. I am thinking of recreating some of its more idiosyncratic and charming vignettes in 6mm. Someone surely does suitable figures.
Chris
Chris, have a look at Irregular's Piedmontese infantry from their Italian Wars of Liberation range. Here thjey are masquerading as WWI Belgians:

Being in Turkey I cannot watch it on BBC 4:( Weird thing, they let us foreign devils enjoy all the radio stuff, but not the TV stuff. I did watch some of it via Zenmate (shame on me), which I had to get for those phases when the president of this country goes on one of his "no access to facebook-youtube-twitter" etc rampages, but now I cannot proxy being in the UK. Providence is telling me not to commit crimes :p
The metaphysical elements were a bit off, but the battles and the interaction of the modern girl and old man made up for them. Also the actor who plays the metaphysical element guy is a great actor, so meh, I forgive them .
In the pub last night, I learned from a beermat that the Carlsberg brewery was founded in Copenhagen in 1847. So it seems that a year after Danes start drinking a lot of Carlsberg lager, the First Schleswig War breaks out in 1848. I am surprised that no historian of the Schleswig wars has commented on this rather obvious connection. Post hoc ergo propter hoc. Bloody Big Bottles, anyone?
Chris

PS @Leman: thanks for the tip, but I was thinking of some of the less military, more bucolic interludes. Do Irregular make a 1/300 scale cow?
Both Irregular and Baccus have cows etc in 6mm. Irregular also have a nice stand of C19th civilians.
