I appear to have misheard someone, as it is Saturday 16th BBC 4 9pm for 1864, and Sunday 17th BBC 1 9pm for Jonathan Strange and Mr.Norrel, using magic as a weapon to defeat Napoleon, apparently. Sounds worth a watch.

The trailers for that have definitely piqued my interest.  :)....Looks like my 'cup of tea'.

Looking forward to the BBC America production of Bernard Cornwell Saxon Chronicles as well

Any news of dates for that, Steve ?

Cheers - Phil.

I think they are still filming
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

That Saxon Chronicles one sounds like it will be a good watch. Have enjoyed Vikings immensely and decided to google some of the characters in it. It appears that this adaptation is an amalgam of different episodes from the Viking period, put together to form a coherent story, so narrative history it is not, but a collection of historical stories, well, maybe, eg a Rollo did become first Duke of Normandy; a city was captured by Bjorn Ironside in Italy in the way that the capture of Paris by Ragnar is depicted. Still can't live with the soldiers of Wessex in burgonets though.

I wish it was the Winter King but hopefully that might be soon (though I doubt it)

This looks interesting. There's a piece about it in the Radio Times as well as 1864, so a nice bit of light reading later.

Watched first two episodes of 1864, and really enjoyed it. Not got to the war yet, but lots of interesting background, beautiful photography, and good acting.  I enjoyed the scene with Bismarck, his sons and Moltke with their toy soldiers, but couldn't avoid letting the geek in me get the upper hand. Moltke with a moustache?  Had the researcher got hold of a photo of the wrong Moltke (Helmut the Younger) on which to base the look of the character?  Bismarck's sons , Bill and Herbert, should be about 11 and 14 when war breaks out, so even if the scene is intended to show some months earlier, aren't they a bit young?  Oh dear.   I'll get my anorak!

Will catch up later today. Looking forward to getting a general feel of the landscape and houses etc for my First Schleswig-Holstein campaign.

It's worth a watch and it'll be interesting to see where the two time periods coincide.

Funny to watch the cultural differences regarding...um...the contents of jars.

Overall a good start, but it would have been nice to see some flashback battle scenes to perk things up a bit.  By the end of episaode 2 i was losing interest.

The shooting is really episodes 5,6,7. 7 is Dybbol. It is glorious.

Bit disappointed they couldn't get Von Moltke right FFS, I mean how difficult is it, one shrivelled, bald, wig wearing old reptile without facial hair, grrrrr. Apart from that, looking forward to the big battle scenes. Did anyone spot the similarity between Mollinary and the Danish officer giving the men a pep talk at the end of episode 2, uncanny resemblance doncha think  ;)
