At this moment I'm working the whole ACW range to be painted for the website.
Leon said it was okay to keep you all informed on the progress so here we go!
Todays pictures don't look like much but all different figures/vehicles/guns per ACW set/code have been cleaned, based and give their first basecoat in white.
Pictures were made quickly with my Phone so nothing special yet.
Next step will be all Union infantry and Artillery crews with the exception of Zouaves and special bits. After that I'll do the same with the Confederates, then the Zouaves etc. After that all cavalry and Generals and last all guns and wagons/limbers. Hope to get it all done before the end of september. We'll see ;)
I'll try to keep you all informed along the way and if you have any questions or comments feel free to share them!
Cheers,
Rob

No - no more than a week - least for me.

A noble and useful enterprise, that's for sure. Look forward to seeing progress shots, even though it's not a period I'm interested in.
Really looking forward to seeing these progress, Rob !
Cheers - Phil
Certainly plenty of figure variety ;D
Absolutely enough variety; that's one of the things that makes this so interesting!
Plus the fact that I love the ACW but haven't got anyone to pay it with in 10mm so this is the perfect opportunity to get to paint them anyway. :D
Cheers,
Rob
Really looking forward to seeing those Rob,
kev
I game ACW in 15mm and 6mm but I am really looking forward to seeing the finished articles.
At least by painting one of everything you'll get some variety. Looking forward to seeing the finished results. :)
Love these figures and I have hundreds of them and more coming!
Collecting both sides as hardly anyone does 10mm at my club which is great shame as I think they look stunning.
Also doing Leauge of Augsburg, both sides. Great sculpts and can't for the range to be added to!
Is that one of everything in the range? Or do you have duplicates of some of the infantry?
It will be cool to have all of these on the website. Even though this isn't my period, I can see several interesting items - I think there is a huge mortar on the right hand edge of the first photo, and some of the wagons and limbers may bear further investigation.
Cool - looking forward to seeing these done :)
Yep, it's going to be one figure of each in a set; there are some duplicates in the range overall but not many.
There is a siege mortar with crew included which I really like too! The limbers are actually the same as for example the British in the Boer War range and the Caisson is based on this limber too. I have agreed with Leon to make a more 'typical' ACW limber and caisson in between painting so we'll see how that works out in the end.
Cheers,
Rob
Well then, just a quick update to let you all know where things are heading.
All the Union 'regular' infantry is painted up now. Time for some shading and highlighting and a few more details here and there including flags.
Just a few more days and the first batch should be ready...

(quality of the pictures is a bit shabby but I've done this partly on purpose; I guess the real deal should only be seen when Leon has taken the pics and wants to post them on the official site...)
Cheers,
Rob
Very cool so far Rob!
Looking forward to seeing those completed, Rob !! 8)

Good progress :)
Coming along nicely.
A quick photo of what it's all going to look like more or less... apologies for the picture quality!
Details and colors don't really come across but you'll get the idea.

Thanks all,
The greatcoats were standard issued in skyblue for Union troops so dark blue wouldn't have been correct.
On the flag; it's one of the Pendraken ones that I partially painted over to make it fit in better with the paintwork on the figures.
Cheers,
Rob
Superb work!
Some officers wore dark blue overcoats, but then sustained a lot of casualties so started wearing the other ranks light blue coat.
Ah well, officers and their private purchases... ;)
You leave their privates out of this! Privates need to be free of gov'mint meddling!
Oooeeer, it's all gone a bit Bennu Hill again! Crossed with the Tea Party, which is doubly weird :o
Is Bennu Hill Romanian?
I'm not a huge fan of the flag... but the figures look good.
I asked Leon for the flags since I thought it would be good to incorporate them in the 'finished product'.
I'm sure there are more detailed flags for sale on the internet but I wanted to keep it all as 'Pendraken' as possible.
The flags themselves have a distinct 'printed look' though and thats why I decided to touch it up with paint so they would go better with the figures.
If anybody has any suggestions on how to use the Pendraken flags please feel free to let me know!
Cheers,
Rob
Just make sure they have some motion in them. I also paint the entire edge with brown wash to hide the white of the paper
But yours looks better than mine actually :-\

Thanks Peter,
I've painted the edges of this one in gold because of the gold fringe usually found in US flags.
This one also has some motion in it although it's hardly visible from this perspective...
Cheers,
Rob

I can understand that. I bet your flags look great from a couple of arm lengths away.

You probably didn't intend this to be funny but I was rather amused by your comment;
'a couple of arm lengths away', with 10mm figures you'll probably hardly see them at all so I bet they'll look good too! ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
Rob ;)
I find the best test for usable figures is "gaming distance" - that's where I'll normally see them at, so looking best at about an arms length is about right IMO :D
Unless it's "display quality" figures you're after where they should be admired at a six inch distance and create exclamations of "BUT THAT'S BETTER THAN MY 28's! WAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" :D
My stuff is definitely best viewed at arm's length. Excuse the shaky handwriting.
It was especially the 'couples of arm lenghts' that made me laugh :D
I was wondering how far off one would be standing then...
Personally I normally go for the 'total look' (so basing, grouping, numbers etc.) for my units but in this case I really paint them almost individually.
The other Union troops are going pretty well now so pictures by the end of the week I guess... Hopefully they can stand up to 'closer examination' (although I understand that 'closer' is a retative term... ;) )
Cheers,
Rob
Sorry, I meant from a distance like this.

I dread to think where the other arm comes from, it sounds a very harsh way to treat an opponenet :D "I need a bit more distance, give me your arm... *wrench, rip, tear*" :D
Yeah, basing really helps IMO as well - lifts figures nicely and gives a really good look!
But yes, that's a cracking shot Bt - looks ace.
Beautifull picture General sir! That's how a wargaming table should look...
Are all the figures and scenery yours?
Cheers,
Rob

Great stuff, Rob. And with enamels too!
Incidentally, FYI, Boris Johnson is the mayor of London, the man who introduced the infamous "congestion charge". Gives the impression of being a bit daft, but you'd be unwise to under-estimate him.
:-bd nice work Rob
My son reckons Boris Johnson has perfected a genial facade and that in reality he is quite dangerous as a potential PM.
He'd be right... the genial buffoon act is, well, an act. If he said he's a profit motivated utter git, old Etonian baron monied aristo he'd only get the votes he bought...
Many a true word ;D ;D ;D ;D. Trouble is there are enough twits out there willing to buy the act.
Okay then,
just another shitty photo to show the progress on the Confederate infantry. Not much to see but it gives an impression of the shades I'm using. Less grey; more brown tones.
Getting down to the shading and highlighting now; should be finished by the end of the week latest... (Plus some better pictures then!)

I hope it does; while painting I found out for example that both sets of Confederate foot Advancing (7 & 8) contain a figure in shirt sleeves; something that wasn't immediately obvious from the pictures but might be worthwhile knowing for those wanting to buy some!

Spot on. I can almost feel more arriving to replace the ones that finally look like they're going to go on eBay (jinx!).
See what I mean?
Thanks for the comments gentlemen, much appreciated!
I do on the otherhand also have a question for you all; I'm about to start with the Zouaves now and although the ones in straw hats are really only usefull for one specific unit (Wheat's Tigers!), the other ones are not so. I was planning to do all different sets up as one complete unit per set, so all eight figures in the same uniform, but I wonder what your opinions are? All in the same uniform or make a mix out of them? Also; I have my favorites for the five sets that I need to do but what would yoúr favorite Zouave units be to be portrayed, taking the specific details of the historical uniforms and the figures into account?
Love to hear from you all!
Cheers,
Rob
Yes they will look good when painted....
ianS
Zouaves in fez and turban would look very colourful as the 5th New York. Zouaves in kepi would have to be a separate unit such as 72nd Pennsylvania, Baxter's Fire Zouaves. As far as I am aware zouave units either wore the fez (chechia) or the kepi, but not both in the same unit.
I was indeed planning the 5th NY for the turbanned unit; 'what else?' one might even say :) For the sets wearing the fez I was thinking about the 155th Pa in the dark blue uniforms with the yellow trim and/or the 146th NY in the skyblue uniforms with yellow trim but with just the fez instead of the full turban? Or how about the 76th Pennsylvania with the dark blue jacket with red trim but sky blue trouwers and fez... hmmm...
The guys with the kepi's are even more difficult though; most seem to have been mainly red/blue and I was actually looking for something 'different'. I was thinking maybe the 11th Indiana in their early war grey uniforms with red trim or the 11th NY 'Fire Zouaves' although their zouave uniforms wore out before the first shots were fired. Same goes for the attractive Maryland Guard uniform in dark blue trimmed yellow. Handsome but never worn in action...
Hard choices! :-\
Any help is appreciated but please be quick as I might start on them tomorrow... :D
Cheers,
Rob
146th New York every time. A lovely uniform, particularly in this scale, as it avoids the difficulties of doing a dark blue.
Mollinary
10th New York wore red trimmed brown jackets and sky blue pants, but wore the red chechia not the kepi.
Not my period so I can't offer specific suggestions.
However, I would suggest avoiding too many in dark blue. You have plenty of dark blue in the Union infantry and dark blue doesn't show detail as well as lighter colours
Quote from: paulr on 04 September 2014, 05:18:56 AM

Indeed Paul, that's why I keep looking for other options; I do want to try a dark blue with yellow trim though because the yellow trim along the edges will probably bring out the detail. (I have to try that effect for the US cavalry anyway, so why not :-\ )
Cheers,
Rob
Dark blue with yellow trim - 155th Pennsylvania - red chechia with yellow trim and dark blue tassel, zouave jacket with yellow Polish cuffs, yellow border trim all round, solid yellow trefoil, red sash bordered yellow, dark blue pantaloons without decoration, white gaiters with brown jambieres. It's been a while but I finally managed to get some work done. Maybe I bit of a bit more then I could chew with 40 zouaves at once but hey...it takes a while to get to know oneself :D
Here we go, in numerical order:
5th New York zouaves:

11th Indiana, 'Wallace's Zouaves':

Right then, the next batch finished; all things artillery related (and some other stuff too):
The gun crews in Kepi's (I decided to paint one set as Union and the other as Confederates to show that they can easily be mixed):
The crews in slouch hats (same thing; Union wore slouch hats too, especially in the West so why not...):
The guns; some painted in grey, some painted in typical Union olive green:
Siege mortar; couldn't resist putting it on some planks in a small vignette... so sorry:
And then the damage that they do...Infantry casualties and the stretcher bearers:
The only help they're probably gonna get; the light ambulance:
Field forge (I have to be honest though; it would be drawn behind a limber in the days but since this is as it's sold, here you go!):
The limber with additional guidon bearer and officer/sergeant/horse artillery member or however you want to call him (confederate flag is not included by te way so you could make this one Union just as easy!):
Ammunition Caisson with four horses and a picture with the extra horses and commander/sergeant/mounted artilleryman painted up as Union. Of course the model and crew could be painted up as Confederates as well:

Okay then, down to the last models now; Cavalry, commanders, partisans and civilians. The last few bits...
