I have no idea why I chose that subject line...

Anyway, not sure which section of the forum to put this in, but it's about WWII so I chose here...

Chain of Command uses a lot of 'Crew' minis for guns & mortars. Usually quite a few more than come in the packs. I always try to use kneeling minis for these unless it's a REALLY big gun. At the moment I have to be selective which supports I allow so I have enough crew...

Long story short - can I buy a pack of 10 assorted kneeling blokes to act as gun/mortar crew (fingers in ears, binoculars, pointing, holding ammo, anything, even if they're not meant to be gun crew)? I'd want Brits, Germans & Soviets.

- Send us a list of which poses/codes you'd like, eg. GR95 37mm AT, kneeling pose x 4, etc. and we can price it up for you.

- Or just pop a random pack of WWII foot figures through the website, and then email me to let me know that it should be all artillery crewmen.

Dang it, what a good idea - I've ended up ordering some SCW crew for much the same purpose. But as they're for AVBCW I can rationalise away whatever uniform choices they've made and not worry about jack boots/battle bowlers/great coats etc.

I reckon a pack of pretty generic crew in shirt sleeve order, without helmets, would work for most arty crew for most of the war?

You could go with nationality and do "proper" jack boots/low boots, puttees, different helmets but I'm not convinced the sculpting to sales ratio would work there!

They mostly are, yes. Even HMGs - in Chain of Command, the BEF Vickers MG has 5 crew (historically accurate, I have no doubt).

It is 1:1, yes - there are quite a number of them around too, I've become pretty obsessed by Skirmish systems of late  I never liked unit bases, where my squad of men took their patch of grass & a bush or two with them when they entered a building - with Skirmish systems, you can use a minimal base per figure & it's far less intrusive. Admittedly, any more than a few dozen figures & it gets a bit tedious moving them all around individually... I've still to do anything with my 10mm Napoleonic figures, which I intend to use for the Skirmish system Sharp Practice - that could go up to a hundred or more men a side, but if they form formations they can move as a base - I intend to make up 'sabot' bases to place the individuals on & move 10 at a time...

Generally speaking, though, Skirmish systems are designed for 20-28mm minis, which are easier to handle. With 10mm, you get a better sense of scale, but you have to make the figure & weapon clearly visible. So, kneeling men are always weapon crew (or other specialists, like Snipers) for me...

We play a few skirmish sets, and even designed (allegedly) for 28mm we've found they work much better in 15mm. I'm now looking at French Indian Wars in 10mm, one figure one man. It's rare that even in a one to one set you get 'real' crew numbers, so Chain of Commad with six figures to a HMG crew is good
