PT Boat for 10mm wargame

Grumpy's adventures with his fish tank navy inspired me to look at toys and model boats that could be blogged to resemble 1/150 scale.

A cheap and useful model is the Testors Easybuild PT boat.  It is marketed as 1/200 but is closer to 1/187.    The detail is crisp.

With Pendraken crew and weapons fit it will pass muster as a WW2- post war PT boat.   I am very happy with the finished model.

In the USA it retails at $3.59

Testors also do a landing craft - but it is "fit the box" 1/600? or thereabouts. Pity - a good large landcraft would be so useful in 10mm

Landing craft are easy to build, the only hard bit on a Higgins is the MG rings, the LCA is ok, as is the LCM 3, having done 10 and 5 respectively for 15mm.

Lingberg have a LCI in 1/160 - has anyone built it?

I used a book titled "Assault from the Sea" - but that was bought remaindered over 20 yrs ago, dimensions and pictures are available on the web.

They're in a slightly smaller box now, but we have bought some new stacking drawers for keeping the new resin stock in, so we're getting a little closer!

Things nautical, the Testors PT boat looks good, will have to poke around and see what I can find.

Haven't built the Lindberg LCI but here is a review along with pictures of the sprues. Most places are listing it as available from late Feb.

It's about a foot long so with a bit of work you could come up with a tramp steamer too. Thanks for pointing that one out.

Many thanks GOM - the Revell Kit looks awesome and will probably inspire me to game the 1956 Suez campaign in 10mm.   The Shermans can be modified as wrecks, cause it will be Pendraken  Centurions that will be hitting the Port Said beaches.

I have modified the Pendraken corvette with a modern turret, radar and AAA.  So have shore bombardment.  

I had a decco at the Revell website and see a couple of 1/144 WW1 German warships including  the Emden are also due for release in March. 

A whole new chapter in VBCW is opening up- not to mention a WW1 East Africa scenario.

for the higgins boat you could try finger and toe models, 28mm card, but reduced by the necessary percentage... much cheapness too

As well as VBCW and WW1 East Africa, don't forget the new campaign I've just come across - ***The Sino-Soviet Clash of 1929***.

It has everything - trains (it was fought over a railway)

boats/ships (quite a few river engagements apparently),


biplanes,


nattily dressed Chinese troops (are the Korean War Chinese any closer?)

You have done it again GOM - an obscure wee war that no figure maker has ever heard of.  I at first thought it was the 1969 incident.

The RCW figures will cover the Soviets.   I see some of your images on the Axis History Forum, so presume you have accessed it as a source?

Indeed the Axishistory forum is where I first saw this action mentioned and it had lots of convenient photos. You can rightclick on a photo and see where it's being stored.

Sparked by this I did read further and it did look interesting. Of course the T-18 tank isn't available easily (by that I mean cheaply  ). The Soviet seaplane tender looks interesting (see how I effortlessly segued it all back to a nautical direction  )

Well, having looked at the site, I am blown away by the detailed images of the vessel profiles.  Someone has done a lot of research.

The image of the seaplane tender - those aren't buntings - its the crew's laundry !

Those look a lot like extracts from Janes Fighting ships, at least the Pictures do.
