Greetings I am the club secretary/treasurer for Redcar Ironbeards (see club pages).
A few of us are interested in starting ACW gaming in 10mm and being new to this period and scale would like to know if anyone could recommend a good set of easy play rules, as we are old and don't like things too complicated ;D

I haave been wargaming on and off for 20+ years and tried a lot of things, currently I play Bolt Action, Rapid Fire WW2 (with 15mm figures), VBCW again in 15mm but have only had one or two games and Star Wars X-Wing.

Any help in navigating the ACW rule set minefield would be great.

Thanks

Fenton

Welcome to the forum

For ACw I have always gone down the F&F route both brigade and Regimental...Longstreet seems to be gaining popularity but I dont really like card driven gamess o have never played it
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Howdy Redcar,

I played some Fire & fury too and really like the rules; quick and easy. Right now I'm working on an adaptation from the Napoleonic 'Brigades & Batteries' ruleset which you can find for free on the Internet. We still have to testplay but it should be workable...

Hi Skywalker and welcome on board.

Welcome Skywalker.
Fire and Fury was the standard for a long time amongst my friends. But tend to use Black Powder now.
Although also used Circa 1863 and Johnnie Reb many years ago.
And may the Force be with you.  ;)

Hi Skywalker - played F&F Brigade and Regimental and now also play Longstreet. F&F are a great set for refighting historical scenarios but I have found the Longstreet system for campaigns is terrific fun. I use the same basing for all three sets, ie. inf 30x20mm figures in single rank, cav 30x30mm again single rank, 10mm artillery also work well on a 30mmx30mm base. If just starting you might note that a Longstreet game is quite small to start with - 30 infantry, 3 artillery and 8 cavalry bases per side. There is also a simplified free version on the Honour website to try out, especially as the rules and cards are quite pricey (but worth it in my opinion). I have now played more than  a dozen games and enjoyed every one of them, despite only winning twice. The Honour site Forum is also very supportive.

If you want ease of learning it sort of depends what else you play.

BP is easy- if you've played Warmaster you'll pick it up easily.  You'll probably want to fiddle with it a bit

Peter Pig's ACW is similar to Bloody Barons etc.  Interesting pregame mechanic, but that can take a little time so best if you can do the dice allocation before you meet.

F&Fis nice enough- just need to keep an eye on the 'orders' mods - units lose modifiers as they take casualties, and which table you throw on depends on whether disordered.

Sunjester and I have started with the TFL They Couldn't hit and Elephant.  We like it.  Card driven, similar to LFS if you've played that.  For 10 mm you will probably want to do Kill markers on a multi figure base, rather than figure removal.
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.
