Hail Caeser Rules for 10mm

Gday everyone
                    Ive just recieved my copy of Hail Caeser and ive only briefly read through the rules.It does mention that the rules cam be used in smaller scale ie 10mm.Base sizes are standard 120-160mm Large 240-300  small 60-90mm for 15mm or smaller. Is anyone else playing Hail Caeser in 10mm and what size bases are you using? I just ordered some bases  from minibits with 80mm frontages and although intended them for basic impetus i will use them for Hail caeser. What are your thoughts firstly on the rules and secondly base sizes?

Like the rules, just don't allow yourself to get too 'cheesy' with the rules. The army lists are okay.
Mine are based on three 30x40mm bases, making a 120mm frontage.
I also use them for fantasy....

We play in 25mm, but I don't see any reason in the rules why you shouldn't use the same frontages and just put more figures on the base, or alternatively "scale down" the bases on a pro-rata basis. Since the rules isist that you square-up forces in combat unit-to-unit, if both sides use the same base frontages there should be no problem at all.

Mine are in 6mm scale and use 60mm width for standard 30mm for small and 120mm for large not suitable if you like to see formation changes but I can always add another 60mm stand to play with 120mm frontages. On the 60mm x 30mm Imperial roman stand I've got 48 figures which really gives a sense of massed ranks. My ancient british standard base is 60mm x 60mm giving a look of depth, using it as large will be 120mm x 60mm giving a real sense of a warband.

We've played loads of HC with 10mm figures - we used our Warmaster fantasy figures, so based 40x20mm for infantry and 20x40mm for cavalry.

We put 6 stands together to make a unit (of either infantry or cavalry) to give a frontage of 120mm and a depth of 40mm. For open order formations we just moved the stands apart a bit to show the unit was in open order - usually giving it a bit more depth.

We also played with 2/3rd move distances + ranges, more to fit on a 4x6' table, than because of playing with 10mm. We found a 36" light cavalry move was a bit too far!!

I much prefer HC over Warmaster, as it keeps the command uncertainty but tidies up and simplifies the combat loads.

I wouldn't worry about column formations too much - we hardly ever used them. They are too vulnerable in HC to use on the battlefield.

Really?  How?

That sounds interesting as Warmaster pretty much collapses once you get into complex combats.  Enough 'fiddly' to melt the brain.

You are only allowed so many units in combat... and not reinforced by extras piling in.

To start with it is unit based, not stand based. So all the fiddly-ness of which stand goes first, and which one is where disappears. There is also no corner to corner nonsense.

If 3 units charge 3 units, it is 3 sequential fights, not one big punch up. This splits things up, but can mean if the first fight is won decisively, the first winning unit can sweep on to the flank of the second defender.

Supports work - both from an in-game effect, and from a playing perspective

Combats don't go on until one side is dead. You fight a round, make a break test (which if casualties are low will tend to result in stay engaged). The fight will continue next round, but you may be able to get an extra unit in.

Combats can be decisive like WM, but slogging matches can occur too (especially between heavy infantry)

HC treats light troops well, they get a free evade if charged, and can move more freely.

My biggest issue (which is also in WM) is that units can move sideways and backwards far too easily.

I use6 figures on 3 x 30x20 for a standard unit of foot, 4 for pike (60x40) cavalry on 30x30 with 3 per base for heavy/medium and 2 per base for lights, irregular foot types also on 30x30 but may use 6, 5 or 4 depending on what they are

Thanks guys for all your suggestions i really appreciate them Looks like im going to need to order more bases for HC though. Been reading through the rules and will be trying them out for sure.I will need to order more figures to but thats not such a bad thing. Got my Pendraken order today so time to give the tiny men a coat of paint
