Hi Folks
I haven't got round to registering till recently but have been at this gaming lark for a bit of time and have recently become interested in developing an alternative 19th Cen setting which was stimulated following reading a history of the Paris commune .
I was wondering about any ideas for rules as I primarily play solo and have frequently written my own ,I am looking at it being at small squad level groups

Welcome to the Forum, sounds like the new Canadian Militia could be an useful item for you there?  http://www.pendraken.co.uk/19th-Century-c15/NEW-1860s-Canadian-Militia-NEW-sc284/

As for rules, I'll let the other guys chime in there.

You know that you cant go far wrong with Warmaster, its been modded for just about every period imaginable.

Our resident Warhamster guru Nik should be able to point you in the right direction for the mods you need.

Many thanks for the warm welcome folks
I will have a look at Warmaster and have also been looking at an antiquated set of rules I found on Free Wargame Rules which I may be able to modify which allow my squads of late 19th Cen valiant revolutionaries fire as both individuals and as a group against the posh upholders of the status quo.
The setting is just post 1870 following the Paris Commune which in my world is still ongoing

Likewise.  I have them on my Amazon wish list as I also have a secret passion for steampunk that I found after reading Stephen Hunt and Cherie Priest which I can seriously recommend

An alternate 19th century sounds quite intriguing. I have Alistair Horne's book on the Commune and it's an excellent source for ideas.

Yep, those Canadian militia and Zulu War British are just begging to be put up against Franco-Austro-Prussians, or even Yanks a la Harry Turtledove. However I think a dastardly continental (lets not be too specific here) invasion of 1880s Kent might be interesting - Operation Walrus perhaps?

Hi

You might want to have a look at http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,7183.0.html and http://luddite1811.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/the-battle-of-dorking-1871.html where forum member Luddite has played a the Battle of Dorking - an imaginary encounter between the British and the invading Prussians in 1871.

It is reassuring to find a community of people with a reading area as diverse as my own :-\
Hornes book is a good read and engrossing as any decent novel ,as well as pertinent . I have just taken delivery of some communards by Pendraken and they are fabulous castings as per usual as the beginning of several civilian militia groups .
I am beginning to get excited  :)

The FPW range will have lots of suitable figures for your project

Best of luck

Really Nik, I'm glad then that I didnt buy into that one, I've got their Secrets of the Third Reich rules and they were fun the few times we've ran them out. Found that the way to go with the Soviets was to max out the number of RPG teams in your Survivor platoon, as any hit with one of those bad boys its a auto-dead result, which is kind of essential when there's squads of Werewolves bearing down on you.

Yep - don't get me wrong: it's a lovely hardback book with some great photos & artwork...the concept is fine, the fluff is fine, the rules are ok...but it just left me feeling that it had been 'underdone' - not enough steampunkiness for me really...and the campaign rules don't seem as smooth / rounded as Mordheim or any of the Legends series - they feel a bit like a poorer copy really.

They are nice enough - but they're not getting much play here and I'll definitely be picking up the Osprey (watching that nice Nickstarter from North Star at the moment...). I do like the Westwind figures though (most of them, some of them are 'meh'), and the new ones from North Star are looking luvverly.

Of course, I am trying to swear off 28mm  :-[
