Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can help with the 1768 warrant pattern British uniforms, what period of the war do they cover?
When did they move onto short tails and caps and away from the prescribed dress or did some or all regts wear it throughout the war in full or in part?

Cheers

Hi - they pretty much moved away very shortly after the start. Haven't got any references to hand at the moment but i think that anything after Bunker Hill will be in shorter coats etc.

Having said that - the 1768 uniform is fantastic and it would be madness not to use it somewhere in a British Army. I know i've got some in my Guilford Courthouse force just because i wanted to paint them

Yep, madness not to use them!

Reckon I'll add a few here and there to the newly clothed regts anyway to add a bit of variety.
Was a Pendraken stroke of genius to add unhatted troops to the range - makes mixing and matching for a campaign feel look much better.

Cheers for the reply chap.

Hi.  Get a copy of "An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Uniforms of the American War of Independence  1775-1783" by Digby Smith and Kevin Kiley. (It's similar to the Napoleonic one)

Well worth the money and fantastic illustrations

Re 1768 warrant it says not only covered uniforms but also how they were to be worn.  Then adds that Colonels still had a big say in what their men wore and often ignored regulations on foreign service.

Happy hunting and painting    DaveL

Nice one Dave.

Just got uniforms of the american revolution by Mr. Mollo through the door on afternoon post and it's proving to be very useful, I'll take your reccomendation to amazon with a hat tip to you.
Much appreciated.

Hi Ry,

Mollo is still a good overview of uniforms but is a bit dated now - still essential for any AWI gamer though.

The Kiley book has good illustrations but apparently has many errors in the British uniforms. If you search on TMP you will find that a poster called Supercilius Maximus (who is an absolute expert on this subject) covers a number of the errors in detail. Its a nice book to own though, if you can get it cheap

Apparently much better is the recent book by Franklin on British Army Uniforms. http://www.amazon.co.uk/British-Army-Uniforms-1751-1783-Independence/dp/1848846908/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363812514&sr=8-1

Another great book is is Soliders of the American Revolution by Don Troiani http://www.amazon.co.uk/Don-Troianis-Soldiers-American-Revolution/dp/0811733238/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1363812599&sr=8-2  Also you can reference lots of Troiani's pictures here for free http://www.historicalimagebank.com/gallery/main.php/v/album01/album15/ - i use this website all the time
