VBCW 10mm - artistic licence allowed with uniforms?

Just noticed the coppers on the VBCW range and it got me wondering, as civil wars often sprout a plethora of mix and match uniforms (foreign backers aid supplies, local industry chipping in, old warehouses raided etc), would other unrelated ranges be viable for use alongside the dedicated ones?
To clarify, would it be possible to use say: colonial british or picklehaube germans to represent a recently raised and equipped unit of the constabulary?
Or even the spanish civil war and boer figures to represent mercenaries/local militia with a frustrated fashion designer as a colonel?

I understand VBCW is a work in progress and the official line takes a lot of inspiration from the gamers/collectors so I'm just throwing the thought out there to get an idea of what's acceptable in what seems to be an evolving theme.
I think 10mm would be forgiving, any thoughts?

cheers

Since it is a fictional war is up to you. There are no experts to nit pick and say " The BUF militia never wore those helmets" If it looks good to you then use them. You could say that the out of date uniforms were siezed from a mueseum or that the commander of that unit wanted to equip his men in the uniform he wore in his youth.

Go for what you want I reckon, in 1914/1915 the first of the volunteer units  after the khaki ran out were dressed in old post office blue uniforms, same would probably happen in a VBCW campaign..Didnt lthe local commanders in the ECW dress the troops in what uniforms they wanted and what was available at the time?
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Thanks for the replies chaps, that's just what I was hoping for, much appreciated.
Now off to the drawing board.

cheers :-bd

I've used WWI Brits and Germans as well as quite a bit from the SCW and AVBCW ranges for the troops. Vehicles wise again pretty much the same again.

That's just what I was looking for, the storm clouds gather pages are an ideal starting point, and full of inventive inspiration, cheers nick.

Any early 20th century kit is good, especially the more ragtag looking like SCW militia, Russian partizan and civilian types.

I do fancy doing this myself but whem I dont know  :(

So many projects, so little time.

Glad the 'Storm Clouds Gather' site is of use Ry :). I've had great fun researching my local history for this, an ideal starting point being your local library.

Very effective at demolision if I remeber correctly.

Seriously - most British Army troops would be in WWI style uniforms and the ones in flat caps could be given black trousers (apploigies to any Irishmen), as Black and Tans. Police should really have shot guns, and two types of helmet - one with a comb and one with t*t. Most SCW troops wioll work as well.

Anything is possible Ryman.

As long as its in the Heath Robinson style and 'Very British' you're fine.

OF course the usual civilians with armbands will predominate.

Uniforms from all over the world can be bought in.
In our campaign, Lord Lambton has equipped his private army mainly with surplus WWI French kit, and the Gateshead German League bought a bunch of German uniforms and vehicles.

Some of the more outlandish things i've seen include militant Morris Dancers!

But consider that many 'great houses' will have stocks of English Civil War 'lobster armour', muskets and pikes so ECW figures could be used.  And some may even break out their stocks of 'museum piece' Medieval arms and armour...

Anything you like can be included.

Hi ryman1

There are lots of possibilities right across the ranges. Useful figures are:-

WW1 German East Africa sailors - great generic naval troops
WW1 US Cavalry - great cavalry not lance armed
FPW French sailors - will do as French naval landing parties
WW1 Italians - great generic adian helmeted figures without greatcoat

Other stuff to look at - Boers and US Civil War types for fedora hatted types, NWF colonial types for police, anything that takes your fancy.

Cheers
