I have a home made No-Beef Wellington in my freezer as I type which is, I believe, also vegan.

I can't understand why Vegetarians, and more so Vegans, want their food made up as a meat substitute?

eg
Vegan Beef Wellington
Vegan sausages
Vegetarian Chicken Pieces
Vegan Pigs in Blankets

Surly if you choose not to eat meat why would you want your soya or tofu done up like meat?

Why would we not? I'm considering a Quorn Beef-style roast for the Boxing Day family lunch.

Veggie/ Vegan versions of sausages, burgers, even pigs-in-blankets, which I'm also planning to do for Boxing Day family lunch, can be just as tasty, convenient and interesting as the versions full of minced animal corpses :D

Why should I give up on the familiar just because I'm vegetarian.

Why am I not doing nut roast for the Boxing Day meal? My daughter-in-law has a nut allergy and I'd rather not spend the afternoon in A&E, thanks. :)

So, I'm happy for you to not be vegetarian but meat eating not really my style these days.

Suet pudding with beef-style pieces and mushrooms rather than steak and kidney? Toad-in-the-hole with veggie sausages? Veggie Burger, salad and chips? Yum! Bring 'em on!!

Don't get me wrong, I was not knocking vegetarians, It was just a genuine interest as to why. To this end you have answered my enquiry.

I can understand someone who used to be meat eater wanting something that looks and cooks in a familiar way. Very useful when trying to cater for mixed carnivore/ vegetarian meals.

Each to their own. I tend to eat ready meal / tinned garbage, now, anyway... so might sample some meat substitutes... someday, maybe?
Actually, reading has made me want to Gnash a  Steak... while I still have some teeth intact!  ;D

Here's a question that's got absolutely bog all to do with gaming...but I'd be interested to know if any of you know the answer.

Do Televisions have a signal booster, just behind where the co-ax cable goes in ?

(I wouldn't try and repair this myself, as I know that even when completely disconnected from the mains, a TV can give you one hell of a capacitor 'kick'.)

Cheers - Phil.  :)

I've no idea. But I think the high internal voltage and capacitor thing is to do with CRT sets. Not modern LCD ones.

But I'd hardly take that as a recommendation to stick your screwdriver in it.

I don't stick screwdrivers into electrical equipment, Forbes !
I use my fingers....which is why I almost electrocuted myself at GW.

Told this story before...but I had a truly awesome photography set there.
Two 'battery' units that cost £1,000 each...which sent the charge to the flash heads...which when they were charging made the same noise as difrulators.

When one of the flash heads threw a wobby...I could see the two 'pins' in the unit had moved.

Disconnected EVERYTHING...
Then tried to move one of the pins with my fingers.
I got one hell of a belt.

Went back downstairs to the figure painters. Used some VERY industrial language....
Another colleague went to try and do what I'd try to do.......and the capacitor STILL had a good charge.

He got 'bitten' as well.
To my shame....I laughed.

Cheers - Phil. :)

'Kid' at ex-work... a 'Know it All' but too thick to know it, (You know the type!)... saw other staff poking around in machines to fiddle out jams or 'lost' items with long screwdrivers. Decided that he could do same without asking... or switching off power!  :o
Very Loud Bang... fried machine... and power off for whole building, (With lots of computers!).
Kid did live to get older... though, sadly, never wiser.  :(

As a vegan I ask the same question! I certainly have no interest in my food posing as meat in taste or texture. Tofu is a bit like chewing rubber in my experience, and the ecological damage to the Amazon rainforest from soya growing and shipment is pretty much the same as meat.
No, I found giving up meat easy, when was it, 6 years ago. It was giving up dairy that was a lot harder. Now there are plenty of dairy free alternatives, so for example many vegan cheeses doesn't taste like dairy cheese, but have a good taste in their own right. Just discovered vegan cheesecake, nom-nom  8)

i suppose the familiarity makes the transition easier for people, but I agree, anytime I choose to do vegetarian stuff (we try to keep meat for the weekends and have done vegetarian months before) I try and use it as an opportunity to make interesting vegetable dishes rather than just throwing in a highly processed meat substitute that frankly won't taste as good as actual meat. If you do still crave a meaty style dish there are some great options without going down the substitute route, e.g. if you finely dice and roast/fry up a load of mushrooms, particularly if you add in some oyster mushrooms, shitake and some other unusual fresh or dried ones it makes for a fantastic lasagna or bolognese style meal instead of mince. It has that intense savouriness meat gives you, but its own unique flavour profile.

Ithoriel

Alas, though I love mushrooms and still eat them occasionally my finger joints are agony for a day or two thereafter. :(

Never been a fan of tofu, though I did use soya mince and chunks for a long time.

These days I tend to go for actual vegetables as a substitute or Quorn, despite a friend who refers to the latter as Soylent Green :)

Cheese, though, no vegan substitute that I've tried (to be fair that's only 3 or 4) has ever come close. I do love me some veggie cheese.

I didn't care for tofu until I moved to Asia. They have a few tricks to teach outsiders with the stuff. Unfortunately, any Thai will begin by making a sauce with minced pork, which limits its usefulness to those who most need it in farang circles.
