Hi all,

About to move country and going to buy all new paints etc. I have, in the past, principally relied on GW/citadel for inks. Can anyone recommend anything available through Vallejo which will do the same job as GW Devlin Mud (which I believe will now have a different name under their new system...).

Thanks,

Nic

Which country are you moving to?...
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Give a try to Vallejo Smoke or black/brown stain.

Draconarius

A (dark) brown wash from Vallejo is "GA203 Game Wash Umber Shade"
A german portal compared the Vallejo and GW washes two years ago
Left Vallejo - right GW:

Disadvantages of the Vallejo washes:
- they can leave stains after drying
- they don't reach every area of the figure (can't affirm this, it depends on the thinning)

There probably are also alternatives:
- Armypainter is going to release washes matching their quickshades. The strong tone probably equals the devlan mud wash.
- Coat'd Arms has a so called "super shader"
etc.

Thanks for the examples there - not sure about the Vallejo example, it did look very dark compared to the GW. I will see when I land.

Moving initially to Belfast to spend some time with the inlaws - then wherever the jobs lead me........

Hi Draconarius.

How close to 'true' is the colour in the photo ?....I know photo's can 'lie'....So it's very difficult to tell.
(Depending on the light source/balance etc.).
To my old eyes...that looks far more grey than brown....Do you reckon your photo's a fair representation of what the wash looks like in normal daylight ?
Cheers - Phil. (Who loves a good brown ink...But hasn't been able to find one since Rotring Artist colours gave up the ghost !)

Draconarius

Hi Techno,

on the photo the black variant is shown indeed - the portal did only this comparison. However, I thought that the picture shows the difference between the two products.

I also have found two other pages with comparison fotos of the dark brown washes and hints how to use them properly:

The Vallejo Game Wash Umber shade is still an unknown then. Does anyone have experience using this ink/wash?
