This past weekend we set up the battlefield for an ACW New Market battle.  It happened on May 15, 1864.  We will fight the battle next weekend, February 25th with 4 players per side.

This is the bare bones set up.

A view of the battlefield to the north.

A view to the south.

This is Indian Hollow on the west side of the field; very rough going.

Union set up with infantry and guns.

Confederate infantry with off board artillery on a two level hill.  General Breckinridge to the right of the VMI section.

Colonel Imboden's rebel cavalry to the right of New Market.  Battery is off board at the start.

General Sigel at the church.

We will be using Regimental Fire and Fury rules; a stand is 40 men, 1" is 25 yards and a turn is 15 minutes.  There are 15 turns in this fight (and we will see if we finish).  battle report after the fight next weekend.

A very nice looking game - Friday is too long to wait :-)

fred.

Great looking table!

Do you cut the foam for each battle, or have some generic pieces, that are close enough so they can be reused.

I'm also impressed with the level of organisation, if I've managed to sort the details for a Friday game by Friday lunch time, I feel I'm doing well, so I can put the table together in the early evening...

I cut the foam for each, but do reuse old pieces.  The wheat field is cut from a door mat.  I believe the material is sisal.

Typically I start getting ready several weeks before.  Other gamers in our group are doing different battles.  We may do 1 battle a month.  Set up for mine takes about 3 to 4 hours at a friends house.

I know it's about the journey more than the destination, but ... isn't it important to finish?
(I did a "Reflections on Wargaming" essay on that question a year ago:)
