Just you. :P

A lovely lady none the less and 95 isn't a bad innings.

'Beano', etc. were not MY scene... I was 'Victor'... but many others had Fun, reading.

I'm afraid I have never heard of him, but I was only allowed 'The Eagle'.  Other comics like The Beano, Beezer and Dandy were considered 'inappropriate'.

Sad to see him go - he was an ornery old sod, but he had an exquisite voice - Lee Shore and Guinnevere showcasing it so well.  Best album - "If Only I Could Remember My Name"

Beano and Dandy used to arrive on a Thursday morning before school IIRC. I'd finished them before setting off so had nothing to read when I came home :( . Commando comics were brilliant as a kid, with Battle and Warlord arriving in the mid 70's :) .

"Battle-Action" comic is the reason I am a wargamer  :D

The Airfix Club pages in that esteemed publication (Club President: Dick Emery!) ran a series on WW2 wargaming in 1978 - based (I think) on the Airfix guide authored by Bruce Quarrie.

For a 12-year old with a massive collection of plastic infantry & armour it was a foregone conclusion...

I learnt to read on Commando comics; I was the only child in the school to have the phrase Achtung Spitfire as part of their regular vocabulary.

Look and Learn for me.  :-B

And the Victor when I could afford it. I eschewed Commando in favour of War Picture Library and Battle Picture Library.

Dandy and Beano  at home to begin with then Hotspur.

Look and Learn in the school library from age 11.

By the time I was on to Look and Learn I was a  voracious reader.

We had a supply English teacher  who decided to gauge the reading habits/ ability of the class by asking us to list everything we'd read in the past year - books, magazines, newspapers.

I was getting through 120 page sci-fi novels in a couple of nights so was at a bit of a loss as to how to list the 100+ books I'd read, let alone the other stuff.

Teacher saw I wasn't writing anything and suggested I list anything at all if I hadn't read any books even if it was just the back of a sauce bottle!

Class fell about at the idea that I hadn't read anything.

Teacher asks what the last thing I'd finished was. Truthful answer, "Encylopaedia Britannica, Miss."

"What entry?"

"Read it during lunch breaks, Miss, started at aardvark and read through to zymase."

"Good God! You are either a marvel or a monster!"

Class collapses in fits of giggles once again.

Let's hope it wasn't the after effects on that head bump in "Ice Cold in Alex"...

Although she was most famous for Ice Cold in Alex, she was in a few interesting films ...

The Moonraker (1957) (Not the awful travesty of a Bond film) set in the English Civil War

Operation Crossbow (1965) as the wonderfully named Constance Babington Smith

How can you forget Amazons of Rome (1961)?
