My lead pile equivalents glare at me daily for not cracking on before the Spanish arrive.
What are your thoughts on ESR basing?  Seems so different to other rules that I worry about having to rebase. I am drawn though to their scale and philosophy to represent the bigger battles.

NEVER REBASE, ever.  That's my philosophy because it can be never-ending.  I adapt rules to suit the bases I already have and haven't rebased anything since 2009.

Unless you're completely unhappy with your original basing and as such never use them. Though I would agree with not rebasing for a particular ruleset as most can be worked around, more just for aesthetics and practicality.

What are those based on? 40mm squares?

Sorry chaps, I should have been more specific. I agree with your philosophies but I was more interested in the thought processes of an ESR user as to what they had chosen.  ESR permits all sorts of basing.  (extract below)   indeed you can even use armies based differently by altering the scale of units they represent .  But their recommended scheme is a little complex so I was curious as to what the OP went for.



And, of course us Europhiles will still want the nearest equivalent metric basing.  Even Boris hasn't made us go back to Imperial measurements.  (be interesting to get that through the woke brigade).

Is that an actual photo of the rule book? Or is there some weird highlighting going on with selection from a digital version? The green highlight really isn't needed. 

The presentation of that is horrific - I think its really saying there is a basic depth to a unit, and that is the also the frontage for 300 men sized units, and scales from there. Although the real world dimensions don't quite seem to tally with the base sizes. 

And yes fractions of inches are just horrible to work with

As for the basing, mine are on 30x30mm stands. That includes infantry, artillery and cavalry.

I've talked to David, the author, about the base sizes before. That base size chart linked on their web site came from the first edition of the rules but doesn't really apply anymore. When the 2nd edition came out they teamed with another 10mm manufacturer to package starter forces that included figures, flags and bases. They settled on 30mm square bases for 10mm figures partly for ease of packaging and because it fit with the 1"=150 yard scale. You no longer have to worry about depicting large or small units on different sized bases as that's handled by unit traits.

If anyone has questions about the rules I'd be glad to answer as best I can.

Good to hear that the basing rules have been simplified (and moved to metric)!

I'd have thought large units could just be represented by more bases? But sometimes traits work for this.
