  • Objectives - Norsemen kill those monks

And others.  Aethelfrith (presumably Anglian) is supposed to have slaughtered monks at Chester approx 613    Bede says that he decided to attack them because, although they were not armed, they were opposing him through their prayers. The number of dead monks was said to be about 1200, with only fifty escaping.

So thats 12 packs at 1:10 with some proxy of a running figure for the escapees.
And then, those super knights!  Leon the puppet master strikes again.

Mmmm, good idea. I'm pinching that.
I don't drink coffee to wake up. I wake up to drink coffee.

paulr

No pinching required :)

As with almost all ideas you can use it without depriving anyone else of it ;)

Once again I expose my ignorance.  Wikipedia tells me he was a Jesuit founder and a very active missionary. But where is he relevant to wargames?

FierceKitty

He got on very well with Oda Nobunaga.

No one expects the Spanish Japanese Inquisition, our two  main weapons are fear, surprise .... and a fanatical devotion to the Shogun? :)

Thanks guys. Shows how anglo-centric my so called knowledge is. I was thinking there are so many other choices of priests and monks who have encouraged the butchering of fellow humans in the name of God on the actual battlefield. Dark ages, Byzantines, Reconquista, Crusades, National wars in GB, HYW, Conquistadores,... Monk packs could be a best seller!  Yet this guy seemed more of an exceptionally well travelled missionary.   Guess it could work out the same depending on the ears that listen to you. So your Xavier will appear on a command stand presumably with a small pile of fire-wood around a pole behind him?  Oh that was a different thread....

There you go. If you think of the influence of Christianity or the last 2000 years or so, and the remarkable lack of fashion choices, Monks and Nuns are quite useful.

I love the story of Nobunaga's saying to him "Either you Christians are super humans, or you're pulling off the biggest scam in history."

Jesuits chose black because they could, as black dye was invented in the fourteenth century: plenty of fashion awareness amongst the clergy!  :o   8)   :D   ;)

Well that must come as a surprise for the Benedictines who had been wearing black for 800 years.

Complex.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black

In the 14th century, the status of black began to change. First, high-quality black dyes began to arrive on the market, allowing garments of a deep, rich black. Magistrates and government officials began to wear black robes, as a sign of the importance and seriousness of their positions. A third reason was the passage of sumptuary laws in some parts of Europe which prohibited the wearing of costly clothes and certain colors by anyone except members of the nobility. The famous bright scarlet cloaks from Venice and the peacock blue fabrics from Florence were restricted to the nobility. The wealthy bankers and merchants of northern Italy responded by changing to black robes and gowns, made with the most expensive fabrics.

The Landsknechts laugh at your sumptuary laws.

Seeing the new monk figure reminds me I had been looking for a figure to use for a priest to go with Spanish Civil War Carlists.

It could be the most flexible pack that Pendraken ever commissioned.
